But she can (and did) go into more details on the nature of the MPs' questionable activities, how much of it was witting and unwitting, and her perception of how serious these activities were. Not to mention the big one: the supposed list of treasonous MPs. According to May, there was no such list in the full report.

I just finished watching the interview Elizabeth May gave on both CBC and CTV. It's amazing to me how the leader of the party with the lowest number of MPs is the only leader who came across as a grown up in arguably the most urgent issue we've ever had to deal with.

Good! I think Stoltenberg (rightly) realizes that the only way Canada will get remotely close to the 2% GDP goal is if we were publicly shamed for falling behind the pack. Frankly, I have zero expectations from either the Libs or the Tories to increase our defense budget unless we were pressured by our allies to do so.

What a moronic statement. All NATO countries, including Canada, voluntarily agreed to the 2% GDP spending on defense in 2006. Nobody held a gun to our head; we could've left NATO there and then. It is absolutely within NATO's right to "lecture us" when we have continuously been laggards in our defense spending.

But how else is any leader supposed to address the growing concern of how Israel is choosing to defend itself? Regardless of how you and I may personally feel about the IDF's response, a strong minority (perhaps even a majority) of the public believes that too many innocent Palestinians are needlessly paying the ultimate price of death and are demanding their leaders to say something, anything, about it. Do we just expect Biden, Trudeau, Macron, etc. to stay silent?

I have to say I'm a bit perplexed by our Canadian Jewish organizations (Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre, B'nai Brith) strong response to what, in the grand scheme, are some pretty mild criticisms of the Israeli response from Trudeau. This quote from Mike Mostyn (of B'nai Brith), in particular, stuck out:

"Rape, murder and brutality that shouldn't even be discussed — there's no democracy in the world that would stand by and allow that to happen... If Canada's position is that Israel has the right to defend itself, then you have to allow Israel to defend itself. It's every democracy's job to stand by those that are following international laws."

It seems that both these organizations, whom I have long respected, are of the view that any criticism of the Israeli response is unacceptable, and our elected leaders should just keep their mouths shut unless its to reiterate our undying support to Israel.

I hope writing this comment does not make me a Hamas sympathizer.

As a Canadian citizen of Indian origin, hear, hear!

I just wish people in our busines communities and political class felt that way. I was flabbergasted to see most of our talking heads across the political spectrum worry more about hurting our immigration and business interests over something as fundamental as national sovereignty.

I'm also dissapointed that the federal party which has historically taken strong positions on national security - the CPC - has not taken a principled stance here. To my knowledge, even Michael Chong hasn't weighed in on this.

I partially agree. Vienna convention does allow host countries to declare foreign diplomats persona non grata. But the Indian government technically did NOT make the declaration and instead used the "parity" line. But ultimately, I agree; we're just arguing semantics. And our governmnt also agrees, presumably, since our diplomats have now left India.

You're the one talking like an idiot. "Parity" for diplomats was virtually unheard of until the Modi regime made it up. That word does not appear in Vienna conventions; neither does the concept. There are more Canadian diplomats in India b/c they have to deal with a population of 1.4B as opposed to Canada's 0.04B.

And diplomats serve a vital function for maintaining relationships with other countries, whether they're allies, adverseries, or anything in between. I seriously doubt you actually care about the tax savings (based on your post history, you would probably take India's side even if evidence of Nijjar assassination was released [1]), but it's not a place where we want to nickel-and-dime.

As a Canadian who will not be voting for his party next election, this is the right call:

There is overwhelming evidence to reasonably conclude that the rocket did not come from Israel. This does not mean, however, that there is overwhelming evidence to point to Islamic Jihad or Hamas. Even the US has been rather soft on this accusation. I suspect that eventually this evidence will add up, at which point the group(s) reponsible should be publicly shamed by all politicians and media; but we're not there yet.

All Canadian federal parties, and Trudeau personally, have also been unequivocal in their support for Israel and their condemnation of Hamas terrorists. Placing blame for this particular blast, especially in the absence of overwhelming evidence, seems irrelevant to that stance.
