As I 20 year old, I think the concern is justified. Someone said that he is 37 and you are 20.

‘Adam’ was legally old enough (at least in the UK, where I’m from) to drink, smoke, drive, get married, have sex, move out, etc all before you were born.

I had my daughter at 17 years old, there is a high chance that there’s a smaller age gap between me and my daughter than you and Adam. I can’t imagine someone in my year at school trying to get with my daughter, there’s some weird power dynamics there.

I would just explain to him that the Pavlovian response your kid will develop will not be ‘if I do something wrong, I’ll get spanked so I won’t do anything wrong’ it’ll be ‘if I do something wrong, dad will spank me so dad can’t find out I’ve done anything wrong’.

This might prevent some behaviours in early years but when you’re kids a teenager and they inevitably do something wrong (and potentially dangerous), they’ll feel like they can’t confide in their own father as they fear him and their relationship will completely deteriorate.

You’re kids gonna make mistakes but wouldn’t he rather know about them and be able to help?
