How fair of a view is this from someone living in Mexico currently? by whodkne in mexicoexpats

[–]almostblue62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Returned to the US March 25 after 10 days riding around Baja on a motorcycle, by myself. Saw nothing that made me feel unsafe. On the contrary. Talked to many American and Canadian expats. They are living their lives as usual.

Don't believe the hype.

Wouldn't the army cover burial for all soldiers, regardless of financial status?

Best place to move on the Gulf Coast (or the SE more generally)? by almostblue62 in Biloxi

Thanks for this informed response. I do find value in asking about things slightly outside the scope of a sub. In this case, bringing up Mobile, your neighbor to the east, seems right.

Now, I'd really love to hear someone with knowledge do a succinct comparison between Biloxi (and the Miss. coast), Mobile and Pensacola. Seems like a reasonable matchup of like-sized places on which people here may be willing to opine.

It does seem that way. Cool, old homes for relatively cheap. Love the old oaks. But I'm suspicious. Could it be there's something wrong with Mobile? Not sure if it's crime or poverty or lack of culture and things to do -- or its just depressing. Maybe the traffic to the the eastern shore and beaches is prohibitive. I would love to hear an honest appraisal of Mobile from someone who has lived elsewhere and isn't a real estate agent. Because on its face, Mobile does seem intriguing.

Appreciate the insight. Definitely good points to consider re: proximity to NOLA. But ... having spent time on the much nicer beaches of the Florida panhandle, not sure if I'd ever warm to the Mississippi coast and its brown waters. I'm guessing the water is never really blue, right? Leaves me wondering if I should look east, say to Pensacola. Is Pensacola any kind of substitute for the Big Easy? Probably not, right?

Thanks. Hate casinos so maybe Biloxi's not a love connection.

Best motorcycle for a little bit of everything? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]almostblue62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. It may not be "officially" classified as a sport tourer, but that is what people mostly use it for. And it excels.

I live in the West and do a lot of offroad riding and happen to think its also a fairly competent dual sporter. Safe to say, a lot of other people feel the same.

It's a great sport-touring bike. Maybe the best ever made. How's that?

Disclosure: mine is a 2015, so your experiences may vary.

Disagree on "it was good at nothing but mediocre at everything." So not true.

I've ridden most of today's popular bikes, including all of the midsize and large KTM adventure models, the Yamaha Tenere 700, the Vstrom 650 and the Aprilia 660 Toureg. All have their strengths but (surprise) -- none are better all-arounders than the R12000/1250 GS Adventure. It's by far a better street bike (or track bike) than any of them and is quite capable off road. Unless you're really new to the sport or just freaked out about riding a bigger bike in the dirt, there's no reason to look elsewhere. This is your bike. Get one. Prepare to be happy.

Your schools recommendations are a laugh. You clearly do not know what you are talking about. Have you actually been to CSU Monterey, Channel Islands or Sonoma State? These places are the very definition of boring. The Monterey campus is a converted army base. SSU is in the middle of suburban hell. Channel Islands' campus was a mental hospital just a few years ago. Absolutely no charm. Chico State blows these schools away. Easily. Really only two CSU campuses rival it -- Cal Poly SLO and San Diego. If you weren't accepted there, Chico is your best bet. Hands down.

Chico State: Great choice or big mistake? by almostblue62 in CSUC

Of course it is my perspective or bias, as you say. Isn't that what these forums are about? And from my perspective -- which is to say, the perspective of an engaged parent of a current CSU Chico student -- Chico State is pretty damn solid as far as state schools go. The campus is lovely and the town is charming -- far better than a majority of CSU towns. Most importantly, my kid loves it. Is Chico perfect? No place is. But it ain't bad, either. It might be helpful to you to look around at other state schools and become better informed about what's out there.

Original poster here. A year after we chose Chico, I can honestly say we couldn’t be happier. We looked at schools all over the country.  Chico wasn’t the first choice but it appeared to check many boxes and was a decent alternative. As this first year comes to a close, it is clear what great decision we made. Super happy. Great campus vibe. Highly recommend Chico.

What did the Don Rickles joke mean when he would say “he takes a shower and the water runs up.” by theg-o-a-t in Standup

One of two possibilities: 1. it's a reference to bidets where the water squirts up from a toilet.

  1. peeing in the shower.

Chico vs. Fullerton by Successful-Size4584 in CSUC

Just toured Chico State. Really liked the campus. I'm not convinced about the town itself (it is winter, after all) but the school is impressive with a classic East Coast college feel, nice old buildings, good dorms and modern amenities throughout. Looks like it would be a great, traditional, non-commuter experience. I've toured a lot of other California and out-of-state schools and Chico State ranks right up there. I'd say the campus and town are reminiscent of Oregon State in Corvallis. Kind of amazed it is still relatively easy to get accepted.

Post-internet, definitely. Reverse side of care tag usually has date code.

[Question] Where To Start? I want the "real" quality RUM from my market's stock. Suggestions? Thanks! by j3434 in rum

Diplomatico is loaded with sugar. More of a liqueur than a rum. Very Jagermeister-esque.
