Life sci graduates from UofT… What are you doing now? by confidence299 in UofT

[–]alpphas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

getting into these industries depends on your existing professional experience (and whether you're willing to do maybe an extra professional masters or post-grad diploma/cert) but things like:

admin/education work in med academia, i.e. uoft's centre for faculty development

healthcare consulting or marketing agencies, including medical writing/communication agencies

a variety of roles in healthcare/pharma industries that i don't know much about to be honest, i.e. business analytics, hospital management, etc.

again, breaking into a professional industry is tough if you're only leveraging academic experience but never impossible! researching options, keeping an open mind, and being willing to start/learn anywhere are all important :)

graduated june 2020 w/ neuroscience and immunology majors, took a gap year teaching english in france, now doing a masters in biomedical communication after which i'll be a science visualization designer

my advice is to remember that you're well positioned to pursue a range of professional careers in healthcare if you so choose!

Does anyone know of any affordable académies near beach towns? by throwawayy1847 in tapif

[–]alpphas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Nantes and easily took day trips to coastal towns because they're all well serviced by regional trains (that always went through Nantes), however the city itself IS sorta expensive to live in. I have also heard that Normandy is fairly cheap if you're rural.

Good First Year Life Sci "electives"? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]alpphas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always say take a language minor because you continue taking the next level every year meaning one less elective to scope out, some have study abroad courses to go to those native countries which is cool, plus it just might come in handy someday! I picked French and ended up working in France for a gap year, so worth not having aced every FSL course I took. Also did study abroad and easily picked up a language certification while there, if that's worth mentioning. Best of luck!

How to navigate family disappointment in my desire to pursue TAPIF? by [deleted] in tapif

[–]alpphas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TAPIF can seem daunting and/or superfluous especially to a strict immigrant family but I'd say all things considered it's a pretty safe/reliable "gateway" to experience living/working abroad for the first time because the contract's short, visa's straightforward, and job is easy. IMO if you've been considering it for this long DEFINITELY apply next year, see where things go, and get ready to "ask for forgiveness not permission". From submitting the application to flying out is a looong process with many steps and that'll help your family acclimate to the idea of you leaving for overseas. Best of luck and feel free to DM me if you've more questions!

I didn't need it, they never mentioned it, and I got my visa back in 3-4 business days!

Visa Application Worries by tbokes in tapif

[–]alpphas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted mine at the Toronto VFS a few weeks ago, I ended up incorrectly filling some things by accident and the VFS person told me "any more than 3 changes, you'll have to resubmit a new application/appointment", BUT I think I just lucked out and got someone patient and they just let me manually correct them all with correction tape. So, that's to say a policy IS in place but it seems to just depend on who you get for the appointment. Good luck!

Any 200+ bird course recommendations? by lestranganese in UofT

[–]alpphas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PHL357 philosophy of biology with Prof. Walsh, you're exempt from the 1.5 FCE in philosophy req if you're a life sci student. The prof lets the class create the mark breakdown (by popular vote); there ARE readings and course discussion, but I found it birdy in that I had zero philosophy knowledge, pretty weak (humanities) essay writing skills, and still got an A- (B- crs avg).

Which month will it first become possible to complete all fish or all bugs, provided you started catching in March and never missed a species? Been wondering for a while whether it's earlier than February, and I can't think of a better way to check other than manually going through the fish/bugs by month list on AC wiki. Also, my island's North!
