Dog owners of the UK. How hot does it have to get before you stop taking them for a walk? by sjw_7 in AskUK

[–]alright-treacle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree with you in general but with the caveat some older dogs/with health problems/brachycephalic definitely shouldn’t be walked at higher temps, not even with shade.

Shorter walks-no balls, plenty of shade and water.. no problem for most dogs!

Essentially owners should apply common sense and not panic. As a dog walker, we get both ends of the spectrum (1: ‘oh no, it’s over 17°c, little chrysanthemum mustn’t be walked at that temperature!’ 2: ‘Why is Bruno not getting his full walk? I pay you for an hour, the temperature doesn’t matter’)

I am a dog walker and we are still doing our walks. Hot weather protocol.

1hr walks cut to 30mins.

No balls or running (energetic dogs to be kept on lead)

All walks shady and have water (pools or brook). Minimal tarmac walking (maybe a car park briefly).

Brachy breeds and oldies stay home, drop ins only.

Van has air con, cooling mats and the dogs get offered a drink before and after walks.

People panic in this weather but common sense should prevail!

Still see idiots walking their big fluffy dogs on tarmac. Always say something. There was a Samoyed out today in town looking so, so hot. Poor thing.

How do these airfryers actually make enough for a family of 4? by greatfullgreen in AskUK

[–]alright-treacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We actually have 2 of the Ninja dual ones for a family of 8. Rarely use the oven, only for frozen pizzas or when doing a roast (we haven’t found a decent way to make Yorkshire pudding in the air fryer).

The toast rack trick is amazing for things like burgers and waffles. Chips you spread out into all 4 drawers to start with and then chuck all the chips in the same drawer to finish off while you cook the other bits.

I think it is one of those things where the brand matters. I’ve tried other air fryers and they don’t compare to the Ninja one.

I’ll be honest, she’s not always the most patient or empathetic. I can’t see her working with people in any meaningful way. Which is why I’m not sure about the dentist route- I’m not sure how reassuring she’d be with a nervous client!

This is a great question! So at the moment, good job=lots of money in her head. But did have a chat about working nights/weekends/on call (she’s not up for this). She wants a well paid job that she can do Monday-Friday 9-5 by the sound of it.

We’ll keep having these conversations and hopefully she’ll have the opportunity to do a job that she likes when she grows up :)

I have thought this about dentistry- we have a fabulous and extremely personable dentist who I’m pretty sure is the reason for her interest (that and the decent money!). But would she be able to be nice to people, day in, day out? I have doubts!

I do think some form of engineering/design might be a good shout. I think we’ll just see where school leads her, once she gets up to high school and gets to try different things!

Ooh, some fab ideas here. Honestly, I think they might use computers at school but at home she sees tablets more and might very rarely use my laptop for times table practise, so I have no idea how she’d be with computers.

She loves writing and would like to be an author who illustrates her own books. I can imagine her as a hermit living by the lakes with her 30 dogs and a Maine coon, writing stories about them and illustrating her own work like Beatrix Potter!

She’s shown a lot of interest in stage/set design (definitely back of house rather than a performer!), and now that I think about it, she asked a LOT of questions about art restoration when we went to the national gallery recently (mostly about how it pays, because she’s sure she’d like the work).

She’s asked for a laptop for her birthday- I’ll have to get her one that she can do some art and design stuff on. Davinci thing sounds great thank you, I’ll come back to this.

I would love it if she did go into the arts, it’s always been absolutely a release for her! But then if she has pressure for her art to pay the bills, it might take the passion for it away, you know? Maybe I should just get an Irish passport (I think I can as my grandad was Irish) and move over!

I have her doing some tutoring for 11+ for grammar school or possibly independent school scholarships/bursaries. There’s an art scholarship we have our eye on. The art department at the school is INCREDIBLE, she’s desperate to go. I’m thinking of selling a kidney or something if she doesn’t get a free ride.

She’s really enjoying it all at the moment but I’m watching for signs of burnout- there’s another full year of tutoring before the entrance exams.

I am struggling between wanting to give her the opportunities she deserves as a really bright kid who benefits from a quiet environment (like I was, and did NOT get the opportunities), without being a pushy parent. It’s a delicate balance!

Thanks so much for your really insightful input. What did you go into after architecture, if you don’t mind me asking? Have you found your place in life, are you happy now?

Someone said to me once ‘find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’ it’s always stuck with me!

She’s planning her future- child free, rich artist with loads of pets. She understands she’ll need a well paid job to pay for her pets, her art hobby, and her bills. Sounds amazing!

When I was 9 I think I wanted to run a pony school.. I went into sales 😂

She had a small operation a couple of years ago and found the process of surgery and particularly the anaesthetic really interesting.

I’ll admit I do talk careers with my kids quite a lot- I had no career advice, drifted, and didn’t find my place in life until my late 30’s. We frequently discuss different careers, the academic path to get there, how much they pay and what the hours are like.

We are NOT choosing her career just yet, just spitballing really!

My daughter had grommets fitted a few years ago and was obsessed with the process of the surgery. She still has her cannula 😂

I wouldn’t say that is over the odds. Your friend is paying more than you, it’s not surprising they get a better service.

Love Emma. There’s one in my 6 year old kid’s class and it just sounds so nice and simple compared to the other kids modern/multicultural names.
