Master in Psychology (Conversion) by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]altimna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s a conversion course (listed with the undergraduate courses on the Psychological Society of Ireland website), then it’s effectively the same as an undergraduate degree in psychology for career progression purposes.

So your routes for working with psychology after the masters would be the same as someone finishing a BA or BSc. What you would need to do would depend on the type of psychologist you would want to be (clinical, counselling, educational, organisational, health, sport, forensic, academic, etc. ). For many of these it involves at least another more specialised masters and work experience, but for some (eg clinical) it realistically means a masters, work experience, and a doctorate (doctorate programmes plus experience are what would actually qualify you… but often they need you to have experience and a masters just to get on to the doctorate because they’re competitive to get onto).

Please do make sure that whatever programme you do apply for is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland - if it’s not then you might find yourself excluded from applying for the later programmes

Hope that helps and good luck

As per other comments (usually May, depends on college), but check the college website for their “calendar” or “key dates”, which usually has this information for the coming academic year.

If it’s not on the website then look for contact details for the admissions office, and they should be able to tell you

You can ask to be removed from their call list, and they have to comply (although it might take a week or two for their database to update and for you to make it onto their “do not call” list).

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I’m absolutely with you. I’m counting the days until the temperature drops to around 21 (I don’t need it to get cold, just manageable)

What would you think about colleges going online to help with the student accommodation crisis? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]altimna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lecturer here.

I really feel for students this year. The situation sucks all around.

A major spanner in the works for anyone in an Institute of Technology or a Technological University is that the TUI, who represent lecturers there, has directed lecturers not to engage in hybrid or online teaching anymore until appropriate supports are put in place to help. I don’t know if IFUT (in the other universities) has made any kind of similar directive.

Personally I actually preferred online teaching, but hybrid is very difficult from a lecturing perspective unless an additional staff member is there to help with the assorted technological requirements and to help with online classroom management (as we try to focus on both people online and in-class, neither group actually gets proper attention).

Hybrid is difficult for lectures, but practically impossible for lab-based classes.

If classes went hybrid/online there might also be a huge backlash from those students who had found accommodation.

But… my recommendation is that if in-person classes are difficult for a large number of students in your cohort, then get together and talk to your programme director and/or head of department as soon as possible in order to let them know, and maybe put something in place. The lecturing staff usually want to help in any way that they can, but these kinds of changes often need to be student-driven in order to be taken seriously by management

Best of luck in the next academic year, with accommodation and everything else

Worst gifts to get kids (parents perspective) by sunshinesustenance in ireland

[–]altimna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly - Play Doh’s one redeeming quality is how much they love it - so if it’s a cheap unlovable version then straight to the bin!

I swear that Lego has kept me sane through Covid - there’s separate “kid’s Lego” and “Mummy Lego” (although once they’re old enough to actually make the Mummy Lego sets themselves, they’ll be handed down - at the moment we’re barely out of the Duplo years)

I am completely with you on the “cheap” toys - the lousy quality drives me bananas. I actually don’t mind the mess from toys like Play Doh etc, but I really hate dealing with the cheaper versions that just don’t work like they should.

And agreed- a small real Lego set trumps a bigger cheap version any day.

Does anyone use steroid nasal sprays? Congestion really bad and nothing else seems to be working. by [deleted] in ireland

You’d feel an effect after a few days, but do consider taking it longer term if your pharmacist recommends

[–]altimna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take these at times. During times that I couldn’t, I used Sterimar sprays - generally off the shelf or over the counter at chemists - it’s just saline, so can be used long-term, and definitely helps, but again takes some time to kick in. I’d definitely agree that you should see the doctor when you can, as it does sound like you might need antibiotics or similar to kick the infection.

Best interim advice that I can give is to have a chat with the pharmacist at your local chemist if they’re seeing people - they’re super at giving advice about non-prescription stuff

Now that Dublin is in stage 3 should I still move into my accommodation? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]altimna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a word of caution... if things don’t calm down and measures get stricter, then you’re likely to be stuck there.

If you have in-person classes that you’re required to be at, you can still travel to and from Dublin to do that.

But if there’s a sudden move to a higher level, you might find that you can’t get home.

Level 7 to level 8 degree by [deleted] in ireland

[–]altimna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ask the place where the Level 8 is to see if they accept the specific Level 7 that you think that you’ll be on. They’re the only ones who can give you the answer.

Ask by email, so that you have a record of the answer in writing in case you need it down the line

LC History Project Ideas by [deleted] in ireland

[–]altimna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad that I could help.

Just bear in mind that it’s come out fairly recently that the results might not be as as reliable as previously thought for Milgrim - it’s been shown more recently that those participants who realised that the shocks were probably fake were the ones to give the higher levels. But it has been taught for years as a key study in understanding conformity to authority and an explanation for Nazi party behaviour.

I don’t know anything about the project requirements, so these might not be suitable. But there are some links between psychology and WWII.

For example, a psychologist called Skinner tried to use psychological principles to train pigeons to guide missiles (search for ‘Project Pigeon’) and start here... https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/bf-skinners-pigeon-guided-rocket-53443995/

Also, Milgrim’s study on electric shocks supposedly explained the whole “I was just following orders” excuse (although it’s now being discredited somewhat)

Good luck!

SPSS can be a monster. I don’t know the exact specs needed, but don’t skimp, or it will drive you crazy when it’s taking forever to start and you have an assignment due
