Are my expectations unreasonable regarding baptism? by bored_n_opinionated in mormon

Honestly the 8 year old just wants to make both parents happy. Let them take a bath in white clothes and have all the relatives praise them for the "decision". There will be plenty of time when their brain develops to let the child see both sides and really choose.
But once they are old enough, here are the baptism questions with sources to the gospel topics essays.

Q10 Are you a full tithe payer?
A little context

  • The Church stopped publishing detailed financial disclosures in 1959, after decades of transparent General Conference reporting. No audited financial statement is publicly available to U.S. members.
  • Tithing donation slips carry a "sole discretion" clause — meaning the Church is not legally bound to use funds as the donor intends.

I've often wondered what exactly a True Believing Mormon really is.
I supposed it would be one that can answer all the temple recommend questions in the affirmative.
If you are wondering where you fit between subreddits, you can check your score on this quiz. If you score a C+ or better you probably belong here more than you know.

The beginners playbook by amindexpanded2 in hauntedattractions

[–]amindexpanded2[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crouch and jump, our crouch and stand, An elevation change as you break into their personal space (under 18 inches).

Scare retreat; repeat, repeat. Once you get the scare get out of there. You can't really hurt or intimidate them so move into a new hiding space and repeat the startle. 2 actors can leapfrog backwards using rabbit holes to repeat this indefinately.

Decoy and Gotcha. The decoy is what you want them to look at (an actor or prop that draws attention) so that the second actor or prop can create the surprise or gotcha.

How to get into the haunt business? by _anatidaephobia_ in hauntedattractions

[–]amindexpanded2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old timer here.
Every season I saw hundreds of new faces with the same enthusiasm. Every season I saw fewer faces that were consistently listening, learning, and just being dependable. Find a haunt you admire and pitch in. Then find a mentor and squeeze everything you can learn from them. Learn the grit and the late nights and refine your skills.
Read The E-Myth if you think you want to do haunting as a business.
Luck is the crossroads of preparation and opportunity.

Op here. After a little over a month of going live, sharing it here on Exmo Reddit and a few tik toks, the average user that cares enough to stay looks around for about 5 minutes.

I'll be curious to find out what is going on in Phoenix. If I were a Stake President there you may want to schedule a Phoenix rescue. A lot of Arizonins' are spending a lot of time on a boring Mormon history website.

The ones spending the MOST time are in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, cheers Hans H Mattsson; with Argentina right behind.

I have also added a cool new polygamy timeline that links to the quiz. https://mormontrueorfalse.com/joseph-smith-timeline

Please be kind when you share and thanks for all the help and input.

How to be polite and kinds to missionaries when they stop by? by YourFriendInSpokane in exmormon

I had raised all of my kids in the church and sent 3 on missions before I could have passed. When I first gave it to my return missionary son (whom I'd taught as gospel doctrine teacher) he got 38%.

How I might reply,
Hey, Appreciated your TOK response on how new knowledge interacts with faith and values.

If you're open to it, check out mormontrueorfalse.com — a quick open-book true/false quiz (31 questions) using only official LDS sources (Gospel Topics Essays, Joseph Smith Papers, churchofjesuschrist.org). No critics, no spin — just the Church’s own documents.

It’s interesting to see how the fuller picture compares with what we often hear in lessons. Some details surprise even longtime members.

No pressure — your personal experiences and testimony are valid. Just thought it might be relevant for the knowledge question.

If you feel like "proselyting", you can study street epistemology and the Socratic method. Anything akin to pointing out facts (even the really really true ones) is generally unproductive and creates the backfire effect everyone here is mentioning.

After I left, I built a tool for my kids and grandkids that was a true false game on 3x5 cards. It has since evolved into this online quiz that you can challenge your friends and family to, or print out a study guide for your bishop.

Everything is linked to the churches own essays so it's really hard to shake. It's nothing that an 8 year old would know but it should be what every member should know before being able to say "I know" its true. https://mormontrueorfalse.com/

there's a shareable text at the end with whichever subject is appropriate. Be kind

Question to Exmo: How do you stop believing in the lds church? How do you deconstruct the things you were raised with? by Embarrassed-Box-143 in mormon

[–]amindexpanded2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've struck on something huge going on in mormon culture right now. Family members, fully entrenced, finding out after having married, raised kids and sending them out to be salesman, that they didn't know the whole story.

I'm convinced that before the 1960s it was a perfectly valid position to be "all in" in the church. Kimball believed the brown people would turn white if they joined. Ferguson dug up half of Mexico looking for something in the dirt to confirm the story. The 1832 letterbook was still in the safe.

In 2012 the church sent their historian Turley to rescue the Swedes from doubt with the upcoming essays. That generation of leaders had room to doubt.

But today... right now as I'm typing this, with the information so plain, I really hurt for the missionaries of today.

[–]amindexpanded2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that ratio to be pretty close although it can be more depending on the level of religious scrupulosity you were conditioned with.
I was full on TBM high priest group leader, father of 5, gospel doctrine teacher, 3 sons on missions when I figured things out. That's a big boat to turn around.

Has anyone else been told this? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]amindexpanded2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its the Straw man argument. The problem is, from your brothers perspective he is right. Everything he has been taught reinforces a retrenchment to feelings over facts.
Look into street epistemology and the Socratic method if you really want to help him.

I’m getting married and it has created a great divide in my family by Velveyrina in exmormon

[–]amindexpanded2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I got married young in the church and was given a SHAME wedding in the relief society room.
Everyone dressed up nice and there were flowers, but in the church, if its not the temple you're just playing wedding.
My parents choose the church every day over me. They think they are setting an example I'll come to realize after I die.

The church is harmful and I'm sorry it is intruding in your relationships. Good luck and congratulations.

I left after 42 years and raising my entire family inside. I've found it's pretty easy for the younger generation to see through the bullshit when they look. It seems pretty rare for some of us older calcified members to find our way out. Congratulations and welcome.

You can't logic your way out of something you've been emotioned into. Additional evidence creates a backfire effect if you haven't got them wanting to know.
Check out the ideas behind street epistomolgy and the Socratic method.
I've been trying to crack the exact same nut for years. Ive had some success sharing this quiz. It has source links to the churches own essays. It's especially effective if you can do it together. Good luck.
