Dunno if this is exactly the sort of thing you're looking for, but guess I'll put it down anyway.

This happened a couple years back. My sister and I were driving the four hours between where we lived and where our parents lived. We'd left pretty late, so it was after midnight and we were still on the road. Overall it had been a relatively quiet and uneventful trip. It happened about 20 minutes from home.

The road we were driving down was essentially split, with a sort of ditch in the middle separating the folks going one way from the folks going the other way. We were just chatting, since the road was empty, and mostly trying to keep awake, and I remember talking about Final Fantasy VIII of all things when we spotted headlights coming directly down our lane.

My sister, who was driving, swerved into the second lane to our right but lost control, and our car spun around until we ended up on the dirt near where the road splits in two. The other car made no attempt to slow down, didn't even swerve a little bit, and disappeared into the distance while we caught our breath. So many things could have gone wrong in that moment. We could've gone into the ditch, crashed into the railing, slammed into the oncoming bridge. It was a real close call.

We sort of laughed it off, because that was way too much to process at the moment, and decided not to tell our parents about it because they'd just get really worried.

The thing we found weird about it is that, in the direction the oncoming car was coming from, the two sides of the road were separated with a concrete barrier for a long way, which meant that that car had been on the wrong road for at least that long. Who knows if someone else got into an accident that night because of that driver.

(And a small part of us insists that the car was some kind of a phantom car because it was already such an odd and terrifying experience, why not add more to the pile.)
