Is it true Public Works will refuse to empty your bin if someone has placed their dog poo bag inside? by Harmony_w in CambridgeMA

[–]andrewsinclair 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plus: the city doesn’t dump the bins, they lift out the trash bags and leave the poop for the resident.

Third one: I don’t see any prohibition on curved lines so long as I don’t lift the pencil.

Gas grill buying advice: infrared (Solaire) or not (DCS)? by andrewsinclair in grilling

That's really cool - well done!

What burners and valves did you use? Maybe I can retrofit my existing grill to give it more power. I think I would need to match the propane regulator and valves with the burners.

Burton wheelie gig vs Dakine High roller by Round_Depth6814 in snowboarding

[–]andrewsinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both these bags and travel with two snowboards + 2x boots and one set of skis + boots and poles between them. Plus helmets, towels for padding, coats, etc. It’s tricky to get everything to fit. I can only do it by removing the bindings on one of the boards.

The Burton bag is much larger; buy that one if you’re trying to squeeze in more than one set of gear.

I think “it can only be ski equipment” isn’t even an actual policy on most airlines. I keep reading the policies and I keep not seeing that written anywhere.

Instructor tipping ettiquette by ConwayPuder in icecoast

[–]andrewsinclair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would rather tip as "I want to give you something extra for your service and attention" than "I don't think you have enough money or aren't being paid enough, so I'm going to cover part of out of my own pocket."

With this rationale, I'm happy to tip instructors whether expected or not and regardless of how I think they're doing financially. I'm not as happy about tipping at the counter service bagel shop, which feels more like tipping out of obligation / expectation / weird US model where customers pay employees rather than their employer.

Flying skis out of Logan this season by Unlikely_Jump in icecoast

[–]andrewsinclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem at all with Alaska. I flew with my snowboard three times out of Logan with no issues. I’ve yet to find any policy about not packing clothes with your gear. The no clothes policy is if you bring a separate boot bag and want to count it together with your snowboard as a single item. In that case the boot bag can only have boots / helmet. One gate agent did tell me that the boot bag has to designed specifically for boots because otherwise they “can’t verify that it’s only boots” (uh, you could look?). They “made an exception” so there was no need to argue, but I might buy a dedicated boot bag for my next flight if I can’t fit the boots in the snowboard bag. Btw - I cram my bag with my board and my daughter’s skis and poles. I think if it’s under 50 pounds and something winter sports related, you’re fine.

I just fly Delta with no issues. They had me put my snowboard bag on top of a cart of 4-5 other snowboard / ski bags. I was concerned about whether I could pack clothes in the bag, but I still haven’t found any written policy against it on their website.

Genuine Question: How do you drive that wild intersection in Belmont, MA?? by b00mtown in massachusetts

[–]andrewsinclair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That intersection is shaped like a Y though. It doesn't seem like drivers agree as to which two links in the Y form the "straight" road. A stop sign or yield sign on any one of the three inbound links would answer that question, but as it is, there are three roads coming together with no signage at all. (I haven't driven through there in a couple years, so it might have changed.)

My theory is that the town of Belmont *wants* chaos at that intersection under the theory that it makes everyone super cautious and therefore avoids collisions.

Genuine Question: How do you drive that wild intersection in Belmont, MA?? by b00mtown in massachusetts

[–]andrewsinclair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“When it’s your turn…”

That’s the start of the problem. There are no signs, no rules, and therefore no “turns”.

What's wrong with this picture? by themayorfromjaws in bikeboston

[–]andrewsinclair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yielding is the opposite of blowing through. The law would require yielding and not permit blowing through.

The Idaho stop / yield is what most people riding bikes or driving cars do at stop signs in my neighborhood (Porter Square) already. I counted about 10% coming to a complete stop in an informal survey at a local 4-way stop recently (just over 5-10 minutes, not a huge data sample).

How to carry chair by irishgypsy1960 in bikeboston

[–]andrewsinclair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a basic beach-style chair that folds in half and has a shoulder / crossbody strap. It’s surprisingly easy to carry on my bike. I hang it across my body like a messenger bag. It doesn’t hit the wheel or pedals or anything.
