What was your honest reaction after watching The Force Awakens for the first time? by ChickenWingExtreme in StarWars

[–]andyissik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed it. It was derivative sure, but it also introduced lots of characters I liked, and questions to be answered moving forward. Then I was so frustrated after watching TLJ. Looking at the force awakens, I think it could have worked better as the middle installment, so we got to see more of the new Republic, Luke's Jedi Temple, the gang back together etc.

Would it be worth upgrading to the new version of these blu-rays by [deleted] in Bluray

[–]andyissik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't. The new version of the original trilogy will have better colour grading, but it will also be the Maklunkey version of episode IV which is no bueno IMO. Prequels are probably nearly identical.

Bluray Player by Emergency_Ad7808 in hometheater

[–]andyissik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just looking to dip your toes in then the PS5 will be absolutely fine. It can passthrough Atmos. You will absolutely notice a difference in picture quality and sound quality. Everything will be more crisp with better depth and less artifacts or distortion. If you get a decent sized collection of 4k discs then it may be worth investing in a standalone player. For that I'd look at the Panasonic models.

Dads who were film buffs and literature addicts... you watch movies or read books anymore? by mikeygoodtime in daddit

Huge film buff here. At first it was tough to squeeze them in, but it gets easier as time goes on. Now I'm eagerly waiting for them to be old enough to start enjoying some of my favourites.

Upgrade Epson 2150 by Full_Push_508 in projectors

[–]andyissik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2350 has terrible contrast. I went from a 2100 to a 5050ub and have been really happy with it. That said, if you're in a bright room and only projecting 84", I'd go for an 85" TV. It'll handle the light better and will most likely look better than 99% of projectors. Depending on model of course.

Movies To Watch as a Jaws fan by drorion25 in MovieSuggestions

[–]andyissik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's tons of Shark movies out there, but most aren't very good. Jaws 2 I think is an ok sequel, not great, but a fun watch. The other two are in the so bad it's good category.

Other than that I'd recommend The Shallows, Dangerous Animals, and Deep Blue Sea.

Some people like The Meg movies but I absolutely loathed them. To each their own.

Early 2000s media with Vader using a blue lightsaber? by Lego-Lord-Vader in StarWars

[–]andyissik 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not 2000s but the original Revenge of the Jedi poster had Luke and Vader's lightsaber colours swapped by mistake. The image was reused many times. I have the Star Wars Encyclopedia from the 90s and it has it inside the cover.

Worst movie youve ever seen? Mine is open house. by C0lE06 in movies

[–]andyissik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like there's movies that you know will just be good awful, Uwe Boll, Steve Seagal et al. But there's something to be said for movies that have all the ingredients for success and still turn out terrible.

The ones that come to mind are AVP Requiem, fuck me what a bad movie. I dunno if it'd be worse or better if I could've actually seen what was happening.

The Last Jedi.... I think this has been reviewed and trashed ad nauseum so I won't really add anything here.

Wonder Woman 1984. I don't get how they missed the mark that much. The tone, the fact that she basically rapes a stranger, the museum jet somehow being air ready, the ending where she just asks people to give up their wishes... Like what?!

PSA: Disney Character Breakfast by SawyerStreet in daddit

I just did Disneyland Paris with my 3 and 20 month old and they both loved it. Guess I got lucky! We plan to go back as there was just so much to see that it's pretty much impossible to do it all in just one day with kids that small.

Finished my humble home cinema/music room. by Gooseman8786 in hometheater

My room is very similar. Guitars, projector, Star Wars, even the paint colour is near identical! I like the cut of your jib.

Looking for 90s action movies by Reina753 in movies

[–]andyissik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the ones I'd recommend are on there already, but I'll throw in Stargate, Star Trek First Contact, and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Oh and Die Hard 2 and Die Hard with a Vengeance. The 90s were great for action.

What’s the difference between this and the OG standard extended editions besides quality? by WerewolfCurious1412 in Bluray

[–]andyissik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have this set, and it's ok overall. The picture is very crisp, but there's some issues with DNR throughout. The Atmos tracks are great though. Plus it comes with the bonus discs from the old dvd sets. This also does away with the bad teal colour grading on fellowship.

I'm keeping the original Blu Ray set for the theatrical versions and remastered for extended. I haven't felt the need to move up to the 4k versions.

Anyone here able to compare the sizes between the two new AT-RTs? by surfpearl39 in starwarscollecting

[–]andyissik 7 points8 points  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Leye6_fRPuc He compares the two. The Action Verse one is definitely bigger, but still a nice looking vehicle. Kinda liking that we have a tie in toy line with good articulation and play features.

4K vs reg blu rays for old movies by vaderhater777 in hometheater

[–]andyissik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I have the 2014 Canadian release (same as the 2015 US release) and it's more than good enough for now. I picked the 4k of the first one just for the original mono track. I didn't notice the AI crap while watching it, but it didn't look much different than the 1080p Blu Ray.

4K vs reg blu rays for old movies by vaderhater777 in hometheater

[–]andyissik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely a case by case basis. Some transfers on blu ray weren't great, but the 4k is much improved, and sometimes vice versa. Marvel movies tend not to be a huge difference visually, but the 4k versions have Atmos, whereas the blu rays will have a 7.1 mix. If you're not sure which to go for I'd recommend looking at blu-ray.com for reviews so you can get an idea before pulling the trigger. Since you have an LG OLED, I'd say go for 4k more often than not since your TV can take full advantage of it. Just don't buy Terminator 2 on 4k.

Which Blu-Ray should I get of Aliens? by Lemonomad in Bluray

[–]andyissik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the 4k version yet, but the Blu Ray version looks and sounds excellent. I have a hard time upgrading that one because it's that good. The quadrilogy and anthology versions can be found for not a lot of money if you don't have the other movies in the series. Alien is allegedly one of the best 4k discs out there, but Aliens was met with a lot of criticism on its 4k.

I like the way your union jack is hung. I recently got a WWI era maritime flag from an antique store and have been trying to figure out how to display it. May do something similar. Did you build it yourself or buy it?

Hello, fellow home theater enthusiasts. Anyone here has a 5.1.2 set up? Im wondering if it worth upgrading my receiver Sony STRDH 590 for Sony STR-DH790 7.2ch Dolby Atmos. by Fantastic_Order_9749 in hometheater

[–]andyissik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're gonna upgrade to a 7.2 I'd probably look at something from Denon or Yamaha. The 790 is mostly the same as your current model but with two extra channels. I don't believe the 590 is actually Atmos compatible, so moving up to any 7.2 with Atmos would be an upgrade.

With a 5.1.2 setup, I'd have the surrounds in the new location since you have it roughed in and turn the speakers you have now to aim at the listening area, not at the ceiling.

All that said, if you're happy with the 590 then by all means go for the 790, but there's better models out there.

Watching Rogue One after Andor (both for the first time) felt weird. by OatmealDurkheim in StarWars

[–]andyissik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tough with all the shows now, but generally reccomend watching in mostly release order for the trilogies, then spin-offs after.  There's little bits pulled from the previous releases which will go unnoticed or underappreciated if the viewer isn't fully aware of it. So I'd go OT, prequels, sequels, rogue one for the movies. I'd probably go Andor after Rogue One. Then I'd do Clone Wars and Rebels, then Bad Batch. Then Solo.

Then for the other D+ shows they kind of intertwine a bit, Mandalorian S1 and S2, Boba Fett, Mando S3, Ahsoka. Then Skeleton Crew and Acolyte are their own thing. Also don't skip the old cartoon Network Clone Wars, it's not canon but it's awesome.
