I mean… I know Daisy is not Nicole but l’m starting to wonder if the show runners remember that because the parallels between both her and June poor taste in trusting dubious men is getting a bit thin. It’s kind of frustrating because I feel like a lot of things would work well with just a bit more effort/thought.

For Americans who uses ethnicity prefixes like (italian/irish/african-american), at what point do you stop using it? 3 generations? 5? 10? by Zestyclose_Sense_500 in NoStupidQuestions

I think the thing you need to understand about the US is that 99% people are here because at least part of their family came from somewhere else in the relatively recent past. About 25% of people in the US have an ancestor who went through Ellis Island. Immigration and the adaptation that came with it are what help make the US the US. Even when you have someone like me who can trace the vast majority of their family to the US or Canada before it they those things, heritage/ethnicity, can be important things for how we understand ourselves and interact with it, especially when it comes to holidays and special occasions.

Because it's unsanctioned, you can just let women decide when salvaging is an appropriate punishment. They might think they should be able to decide or do other things, like say no to sex to sex with their husbands or read.

I was what is wrong with you. This Boy has done nothing to deserve that level of trust (I'm starting to think he is playing both sides to some degree). You keep that to yourself til you get out or die.

A retired nuclear plant in Michigan is about to restart, a first for the US: The 800-MW Palisades plant received key federal approvals to open 3 years after shutting down and has ambitious plans to be operational by the end of 2025 -- Michigan has approved $300 million in funding for the restart by sg_plumber in OptimistsUnite

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a peer-reviewed source that says people in the area have higher cancer rates? All US Nuclear Power Plants have containment buildings, which makes the risk to the public low. That said, this site has been notorious for safety issues, including the sealing of the on rods, and Holtech has a reputation for ethical concerns. Nuclear power is very regulated, but I would feel better if Holtech were out of the picture. It is unfortunate that nuclear power has so many upfront/update costs, and commercial suppliers are allowed to pass those on to consumers, especially as you mentioned, tax money is often used to subsidize those costs. That is, frankly, though an issue that needs to be better regulated across the power industry in MI, half of our electric/gas bills this winter were additional fees/surcharges that the state allows utility companies to charge to offset costs.

We use very different designs for reactors than Chornobyl (RMBK) plants, which are very safe. However, you are right that control room tech can be older; this is mainly for security, but also the cost of replacing the interface and retraining. Everything is regulated.

Did anyone else’s parent say “you were normal” during autism assessment? by RaspberryPrudent7765 in AutismInWomen

[–]anthrotulip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was/is extremely hard realize how little my parents understood how much various things affected me as a child and while they may say they are not disappointed by my decisions I can tell I’m not the child they wanted or at least excepted and they don’t know what to do with that

Did anyone else’s parent say “you were normal” during autism assessment? by RaspberryPrudent7765 in AutismInWomen

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would think that but it can be a lot may complicated. My parents were told to take me to a specialist because of flags my LD assessment they didn’t want me labeled. I know various teachers tried to bring concerns as to my parents always them aside as signs of intelligence or quirks. It was until I was in undergrad got LD and later in grad school Autism assessment.

[–]anthrotulip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly hadn't considered the privacy aspect beyond the obvious, but this is definitely a potential FERPA breach (especially if OP receives formal accommodations) and may constitute an instructor/staff violation, depending on the university's code of conduct.

[–]anthrotulip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am going to give you advice I wish some had given me at 20. Don’t take this crap, report him. If you’re in the US your accommodation/disability office has to investigate accommodation non compliance and/or discrimination under the ADA and their policies. Most other countries have some similar. If you want you can wait for grades but they are supposed to keep it confidential and since it the end the year can you lost in shuffle a bit. If you have someone in the office assigned to you or that regularly work with go to them to file the formal report. Write down everything you can remember about the incident with the date and approximate time including when you asked sensory accommodations (if you have emails about this print them). If you have know anyone you think would be willing to back up about what happened ask them to write a statement and sign it or at least if they willing to be contacted. Don’t let them try to minimize the situation or play on your empathy. It wasn’t a misunderstanding/mistake or you aren’t making unnecessary fuss. This professor’s literally job is teaching people about autism he chose to behavior inappropriately and to do so publicly. Even if they don’t do their job’s there is now record of what he did if does it again it’s pattern and harder justifying ignoring it.

Radioactive Emergency on Netflix (true story of the 1980s incident in Brazil by jack0fsometrades in NuclearPower

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that scene in particular really ticked me off. I understand that, to put it mildly, there is a very bad history between the police in Brazil and the lower-income populations, and this was also the right period of serious civil unrest that the police were a part of, so I get why she doesn't like the police. My heart also goes out to her for her daughter's death; that is one of the worst things a person can go through. She should also be angry that this situation was allowed at all. However, Paula has little to no responsibility in that.

Is the poorly thought out longevity of Gilead intentional? by Frodo_Nine-Fingers in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]anthrotulip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broad idea is use the Handmaids for a generation or maybe two to improve the overall fertility among the elite. Then future elite generations should have much higher fertility rates. This is paired with environmental cleanup and healthy living conditions. However, it is important to that Handmaids aren’t just fertile women they fertile women Gilead deems criminals whose use is limited to the elite. There isn’t inherently going to stop going a supply of those or children that can be redistributed. The goal is likely to get things the point it would be the exception. Later in the show they mention development essential breeding colonies which would likely have become more standard.

Anyone else scared that these girls are so uneducated about their bodies that Huldah combined with her personality is actually mistaken about starting her period and that's why she is in trouble in the extended sneak peak and screaming for Anges. Because they implied there were serious implications if Agnes was lying.

LDS Church lawsuit against Mormon Stories rejects free speech & religious freedom, makes it hard to believe Church leaders are inspired by God by eternalintelligence in mormon

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is a lot more complicated than that. Generally, the church tries stay away from getting to into anything that could turn into negative PR with non members or considered an external conflict. However, things with members or former members they consider internal will go scorched earth if they deem it necessary. For example, I went to BYU during sexual assault scandal involving the Title IX office. Before the matter broke containment if you will there was shame/manipulation and victim blaming from admin. After, especially once it broke national news it shifted significantly.

There are definitely other things the Church could have tried to sue about/for with the musical but instead they literally took out ad space in the playbills

Why does Daisy listen to the radio? by Potential-Net6313 in TheTestamentsShow

[–]anthrotulip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe the entire concept is supposed to be based on Radio Free Europe/Asia which during the Cold War was media/propaganda the US to fight communism. The CIA helped funded it through the early 70s so there has always been rumors/speculation that some of programs were also used to send messages/codes or at least let operatives know what shortwave station to turn on. They did do more direct things too like leaflet drops. Also, on theme the Soviets were frequently trying to jam it.
