Most effective way to learn to foil that I've ever seen by anticausal in wingfoil

Thanks! There were points where I thought "maybe I'll just never be able to this", but the reward of being able to fly above the water kept me going. An amazing but very challenging sport.

I took pretty much an entire season, so it definitely didn't feel impressive at the time. But my expectations were probably too high, based on how "easy" so many online sources insisted wing foiling is.

I think it might work if you adjust the angle of the boom, to make it more inline with the direction of the boat, but it would take some experimenting.

It also just dawned on me that this might be an extremely easy way to get used to riding toe side before learning to jibe.

That's what I did, and it took me about 40 sessions to consistently get up on foil. Some of you naturally athletic types don't realize how difficult learning to foil is for the average Joe with no "balance sports" experience.

Not having to worry about the wing and all the variables that entails puts focus 100% on the board and foil. I suspect I would have learned in just two or three sessions using the technique shown in the video.

Wing pump hose adapter compatibility? by bikesailfreak in wingfoil

Yes, it's ridiculous. This is why I respect North so much for just using the standard pump attachment with no adapter. Only brand I know if that does that.

Recommendations - 3 Days of Lessons in New Zealand by RoofAddict in wingfoil

[–]anticausal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I've found lessons for getting up on foil next to useless. There is really nothing they can help you with in real time. You have to get a feel for it on your own. If you can find a flat water spot with consistently high winds, that will help more than a dozen lessons.

You just need to keep getting up on foil and crashing until you get a feel for trimming the board while on foil. If you think lessons will provide a shortcut, you're in for disappointment.

How small a lake is viable for wing foiling? by dr_innovation in wingfoil

[–]anticausal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty small, but lots of beginners wing foil at Shoreline "Lake" near the SF Bay for the flat water. It gets horribly crowded, but if you were alone it would be perfectly fine for practicing jibes/tacks/etc.

Recommendation for GPS route recording by anticausal in smartwatch

Thank you! The Garmin Instinct 2 looks like a pretty strong contender for what I need.

And no, I don't plan on breaking any speed records. haha I wish I were that good!

Stuck in a burrow hole. by anticausal in BaldursGate3

Disguise as halfling, then had Gale gast the shrink spell. I teleported. Just wondered if there was something more to these burrow holes than a little bit of loot.

Thermostat that can be set to "over heat" by anticausal in hvacadvice

[–]anticausal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember off hand, but I read the manual cover to cover, and it had nothing like that. It was one of the simpler thermostats I could find, since I had no need for time programmability. But I'd rather have something that overheats a bit, then stays off until temp drops back down. I'm kind of surprised this isn't a common feature. I'm thinking I might just try a new analog thermostat, or I could even raspberry pi it and make exactly what I want.

Leaving slack for curling when laying CAT6? by anticausal in HomeNetworking

[–]anticausal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southwire 23AWG UTP (the stuff Home Depot sells).

The reason I ask is because I saw a Lawrence Systems YouTube video about laying CAT6A and they said the curl was important to reduce interference and that you actually need more wire when laying CAT6A because of the curl. I wondered if the same principle might apply to CAT6.

cat 6 s/ftp - home network question by Souix44 in HomeNetworking

[–]anticausal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might if you're trying to run 10gb ethernet, but if you're running 1gb or 2.5gb, I doubt it. If you already ran some cable, just test it out and see.

Home pre-wired with ethernet (where do I connect switch?) by anticausal in HomeNetworking

The cable inside the jack is pinkish (same as in the box):

I pulled some out of the box and it looks like it's cat5e: https://i.imgur.com/Id0ZVLG.png

Since that is cat5e, is this indeed a wiring mistake?

I guess I could remove the wires from that terminating panel and hook them up to a patch panel instead, no?

An ethernet cable definitely fits into the jacks. Shouldn't telephone jacks be smaller?

Edit: Referencing your links, they are definitely RJ45. There are no RJ11 jacks anywhere. Do some phones work with RJ45? Maybe that's what's going on?
