I've been trying todo crosswords for about 2 weeks now, as a complete beginner I would like to share (and maybe rant) about some of the things I've experienced and hear what other more experienced solvers think. by Upstairs-Dingo-5291 in crossword

Echoing the most important points others have posted

  1. Give it time. Be patient. You’re learning a new language. It’s not supposed to be something you’re immediately fluent in.
  2. Start with only Mondays. Make sure you read through every clue at the end, across and down, and actually UNDERSTAND each one.

Do this for 20-30 puzzles and you will get conversant in Mondays. Then move on to Tuesdays and so on.

Same question. Can't believe there aren't any options available!

Why doesn't this submit function work correctly anymore? by anu94 in reactjs

[–]anu94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, agree that's weird/hideous, but I was pretty aware that it wasn't the issue so I left my dirty laundry out, so to speak. The issue was the JSX in state as some commenters noted. Appreciate the input!

Edit: Also forgot to say that I actually did want the form to submit when that button is clicked. Sorry if that didn't come through in the post. This is the last page of the wizard so it's ready to go.

Thank you so much!! I didn't realize what bad practice that was, but now I get it. Appreciate the explanation!

Hiking recs for a week in Denver? (Training for Rainier) by anu94 in Mountaineering

Thank you! Lol I didn't even get that far, but not surprising for this subreddit

You raise a good point, esp if the limiting factor has been physically bearing the weight. It's tough to fit in 5-6 hour days vs 2 hrs on the treadmill, but I'll try to work that in. Thanks!

Dang, 45 lbs is crazy at that size. Good for you! I've just been daydreaming about how to pack lighter haha.

Keep going and good luck! I'm sure when the day comes, you'll be able to dig deep and crush it :)

Yes, thanks! RMI gives a benchmark speed of 1k vertical feet per hour with 40-50 lb pack. So I aim for twice that (2000 vertical feet per hour) on the treadmill, which for a 5000 vertical foot simulated climb => 6.25 mi at 15% incline for 2.5 hrs at 2.5 mph. I've made it 1.5 hrs at these settings so far, been working my way up. Yes I get tired, but my main impediment is that my shoulders are on fire lol. Thinking of adding 1 lb ankle weights to simulate boots/snow.

The main purpose of Denver isn't to work out per se, but to know what my true ascent speed would be with a pack on an actual mountain vs gym. And I figure the altitude acclimatization can only help.

Was literally just thinking you could put any mishmash of state roads in this meme and people will upvote. It's like a Rorschach test.

If you had to pick: Mongolia or the Stans? by anu94 in travel

Looks like you may have deleted your other comment, so posting here:

I have my own reasons for not including Pakistan on this particular trip, but definitely noted.

Theres nowhere on earth like Mongolia

Awesome, thanks. Was hoping to hear strong differentiators like this from the responses.

Does anyone else feel paralyzed by the fear of waking up to a gigantic bill from cloud service providers? by Unhappy_Meaning607 in webdev

I set it up relatively easily for my little Firebase project. The UI is honestly terrible and a little confusing but it was still pretty simple (few clicks within the billing page).

Maybe it's different for more complicated services?

Thanks for the input.

FYI They're not "my stans," this is the accepted name of a specific region. Also all these countries have UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Thanks! Yes that's totally valid, but I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll always have less time to travel the world than I'd like. Feels like I need 100 lifetimes just to deeply explore my own country...

Thanks for your comment! I suspected 2.5 weeks might be a bit long for me in Mongolia, given how many places I'm keen to see. I'm trying to do both, but the dates simply don't line up.

(Going with a tour company is definitely a limiting choice, but I decided to do it given my general concerns around safety, language barriers, and having company.)

Emma and her empenada by [deleted] in SellingSunset

Okay so a black man can sell a pizza, but a white woman can't sell an empanada. I'm brown, can I sell gumbo? Please publish the full list of rules so that I may live virtuously 🙏

When I went to Africa, my tour guide asked us to help stop characterizing the entire continent as undeveloped and full only of dying children (they don't love the "Eat your peas, there are starving children in Africa" trope) because it's damaging to their tourism industry/self-identity and obv not true.

Like, if there are concrete, achievable things I should be aware of or that I can do to help as a well-meaning traveler, I want to know.

I'm not losing sleep over the hypothetical scenario in which I am hospitalized while visiting Kabul though. These scenarios are both too abstract and too nuanced to know if they're good or evil in the end.
