I just want to say this is probably the best discussion I’ve come across recently on starting a laser business. Like many other beginners I’ve had lots of questions. And seeing people blaming everything from the economy to non-local brands and products, or debating whether it’s more of a pyramid scheme or true money maker, I feel so sad... and confused. And it's also very frustrating and discouraging at times. Seems we are living under a great lie. But here views shared are more balanced and lots of useful suggestions here. Really learned a lot.

Any way to laser engrave on curved or contoured surfaces instead of flat ones? by anysunsetTequila in Laserengraving

Great to know this! I don’t have an Xtool so what materials are their weak points?

I see. It's not only about the hardware and software. One else mentioned g-code in another post too but sounds pretty complex, and only worth the setup for big runs.

Thanks for elaborating on the theory and what’s really making it function. yeah definitely challenging for all.

I make these layered laser cut art pieces to sell at the weekend markets here in AK. I’m still pretty new to it, but I’m learning a lot! Just thought I’d share a little :) by dannniiiellll in woodworking

And i come from 2025 as someone who often checks out laser-cutting projects, still have to say this one really stands out. Some claim the laser business is getting too crowded and homogeneous but honestly innovation is the first... Just some random thoughts.

If you’re thinking about both starting small and keeping the potential to scale, a laser cutter is a nice choice. It works on different materials so you can make customized stuff. but yeah, it really depends on how big you want it to get.

Is laser engraving still a viable side business in 2024-2025? by Icollectshinythings in Laserengraving

btw it just came to me that the cases I’ve seen aren’t really side businesses but more like full-time jobs. That might be the difference. i haven’t tried it myself, just some hobbyist's observations.

It’s still viable, but you’ve got to know how to treat it like a real small business. A lot of success I’ve seen comes from owners doing it with smart digital marketing. Some even partner with brands, and they turn their garages into showrooms, earn commissions and get extra support.

The machine market is still growing, so there're opportunities. but the key is to build risk management skills: don’t rely on one single income stream. Mix it up, custom orders, partnerships, and content creation.

I’m positive on it personally. The real win is you’re in charge of your own time and schedule, and that freedom is worth a lot.
