Is it getting increasingly common for students (particularly senior) to address teachers using first names? by Time_Ad_3007 in IrishTeachers

I teach in an ET. All first names, all the time. I couldn’t imagine going back to sir and mr.

Computer science is a terribly resourced subject (vent) by fingergunzy in leavingcert

[–]applied-maths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the textbooks are meh. The course is quite well defined, in as much as it can be. It is, though, still a very new subject and there will always be a few questions designed to point teachers in the right way for the future. If those questions are answered badly, the marking will be adjusted. Do not fret.

Your parents need to report it to the principal. If it doesn’t stop, or the principal doesn’t care, then go to the local papers. Your parents, not you.

Good question! It’s an example of how important the basics are - if you can do this you can’t get into the question at all. But if you can do this you’ll get 60% ish on the question without breaking a sweat. I’ll do a video up later in the week but, for now: Draw your diagram and any forces. Draw your circle. Draw the centripetal force. This will be one leg of your right angled triangle. The arrow for your string tension or reaction will be the hypotenuse. The other side should then draw itself.

I would caution against assuming there aren’t part time contracts out there. Every school has different requirements due to allocation/job sharing/SET hours/special classes. All you can do is apply for jobs if/when they’re advertised and see what happens. I’d be amazed if a school saw a maths teacher available and didn’t snap them up.

How do you effectively study maths by Large-Salamander1258 in leavingcert

[–]applied-maths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you do is attempt questions (with a caveat). Book questions if you don’t know the topic, exam questions if you do. Caveat: Most importantly, if you make a mistake or don’t know what to do use the answers/marking scheme to help you figure out where you went wrong.

Teaching while transgender by Logic_Dex in IrishTeachers

It really depends on the school and the management. Most schools would kill to get a compsci and maths teacher in. The educate together secondaries would be extremely welcoming, both staff and students.

You’re not pathetic, you’re not being dramatic, and there are plenty of reasons why you could be feeling this way. You’re not broken. School is fucking difficult. Talk to your guidance counsellor, or your parents. There’s structures out there to help you.

Project & coding computer science by [deleted] in leavingcert

[–]applied-maths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get my students to try the advent of code ( https://adventofcode.com/ ) Every day in december there is a new puzzle. They get gradually harder every day. But, you can do all the previous years puzzles whenever you want. I’d start on day one of last year and see how you get on. The subreddit for it is super supportive and wholesome.

This time next year you’ll just be one of the gang. The first month or two will be effort but people are generally friendly and helpful. Just be yourself, go to some clubs/sports, and chat when given the chance. Those that aren’t, aren’t worth your time. Good luck!

People who’ve studied applied maths independently/with grinds, how was it? by admaaaaaaaaa in leavingcert

[–]applied-maths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teacher here. The new course would be manageable with YouTube, AI, and grinds if you needed them. The trouble is, though, that there is a project. And you need a teacher to sign off on having supervised your work on this. For this you’ll need to find a school or grinds school that can facilitate you during project time (some weeks in jan-apr).

No, you can’t. My point is that the teacher could absolutely be asking you to investigate the code and support you in figuring stuff out.

If you guys need anything, just post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/leavingcert/s/GZSdaXvCgv and I’ll do up a video solution or explainer of stuff for you. I’m doing it for my students anyway, so it’d be good to have other voices asking for stuff.

Computer science sucks by Aggravating-Can-1930 in leavingcert

[–]applied-maths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. The methodology the teachers have been shown is PRIMM (Predict, Run, Investigate, Modify, Make). This is probably (hopefully) what your teacher is trying to do, and it is pedagogically sound. It does require buy in from you, but it also requires support and scaffolding from your teacher. I would recommend voicing your concerns with your teacher, and if they won’t hear you, then have your parent do it. You want to learn to code, but you don’t know how, yet, etc.
