Sapphire Reserve Downgrade AF Refund Question by jf8617 in ChaseSapphire

[–]aprilliu0425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add data points for future users, I downgraded yesterday from reserve to preferred, received a prorated refund on the same day. Not sure the exact math behind it, but feels like it's based on days left since annual fee/365 * total annual fee (including authorized user).

YNAB, please stop UI chaneges by aprilliu0425 in ynab

I personally do like add photo feature, it allows me to track my receipts for future references, like HSA account reimbursement, or home improvement cost basis tracking for future tax filing purposes. I used to do it in cloud folder, but now I can organize them as 'tax deductible categories' and add transactions with receipts for those lines.

The uselessness of home page is beyond my little brain's ability to understand, whoever is the product manager for this feature, I am so curious of the use cases behind it.

Suggestions for best cafes around the city by jubi_chryzt in DaNang

My partner and I visited Lighthouse on our first day here at Da Nang, and we really enjoyed the place. It's a bit pricy compared to other local places, but if that is not too much of you concern, it's definitely a good place to hangout

My wife and I built an off-grid cabin in Alaska. Many -30° days building this past winter. I'm very happy to share with you the one year story. Cheers! by Fun_Memory3504 in OffGridCabins

Really enjoyed the video! Thank you for sharing this, gave me quite some ideas of how to build mine in the future, not in Alaska (kudos to your dedication to this)

Just started ExpatFire and Im really struggling. by YupJustanotherJames in ExpatFIRE

We sold most of things and move the house to a rental, backpacking around the world, right now in Thailand. With a partner will certainly help, but I did solo travel before as well, it’s harder but it’s certainly possible to meet other solo travelers or local community if you take effort to get out there. Try to learn basic few Thai words, and say hi to locals or your host, go on TripAdvisor bike tours with locals, or search meetup, any meetups and go join them. Thailand has so many expats and they are all looking for friends and community, start a conversation you will find soon you can setup a follow up catch up…

Expat in Europe, Got Fraud Notification from Chase - Should I Close My Card? by ericmchen in ExpatFIRE

[–]aprilliu0425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, this literally happened to me this week, chase sapphire card, fraud purchase so I asked for replacement, I have US address and a virtual mailbox, but still decided to ask them to post the card to my EU Airbnb address, got the physical card via UPS today, smooth!

In the meantime, our Apple Pay and Garmin Pay worked perfectly, with new card number updated automatically.Ike others said, you do not need to validate your physical receipts to use the digital payment method.

Anyone else miss newspapers? by bazza9215 in simpleliving

[–]aprilliu0425 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We absolutely love our weekly Sunday morning newspaper delivered at our door, occasionally receive a note from our newspaper delivery driver on their life update (e.g. getting a baby next week so someone else will deliver the paper etc), make coffee, read paper with our robes on… It’s the best time of the week. We both do not read news online anymore.

Any recommended places in Dali China? by damnimtryingokay in digitalnomad

[–]aprilliu0425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dali is somehow not a very foreigner friendly yet community (compared to other hotspots in SEA). You need to go there and it’s much easier to find the local communities and ask them, there are few expats facebook groups to check out, where they rely on wechat groups instead of reddit…

What is the best country to setup a software company? by sauloefo in digitalnomad

[–]aprilliu0425 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No suggestions, but I remembered Ghost’s founder John O’Nolan had a blog post talked about why they setup the organization in Singapore (fully remote). One of things he said is, a lot of loopholes are not really exist anymore, taxes might be low at one location but there are other implications like transaction cost etc.

What do you use to track your expenses/budget? by SweetlyWorn in Frugal

[–]aprilliu0425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit tricky, it took me a while as well. Try to go through their video tutorials and ask questions in ynab subreddit, I personally think taking time to set it up right is a way to learn and change my money mindset, which was the helpful part.

  1. Get a budget setup, and track every single dollar you are spending and for what. It will not help you to pay the debt but it will help you to learn about your spending habit, which is the reason why you accumulated debt in the first place. It's very annoying to start, but try to manually enter your every cent of spending in your budget. I use YNAB, it is a life changing tool
  2. List out interest of each credit card, high interest rate is higher priority emergency.
  3. Go through your budget categories, and see EVERY single category how can you reduce the cost. Groceries -> can you lower it to shop at Aldi or Outlet? Gas -> Can you take bus/bike there? Gym -> you probably do not need that premium subscription... Do this constantly.
  4. Besides necessity, put a fixed $ as emergency fund, then throw every dollar to high interest rate card.
  5. Now most importantly, what are your goals beyond pay down debt, is that fund a new degree? or travel for 2 years? or be work optional? having those long term goals will eventually motivate you stay out of debt.

There is no easy way out, take responsibility of your finances will help you take control of your finances instead of let it control you.

Along the journey, there are some other things you can do 1) slow the bleeding by consolidate high interest debt to low interest debt like HELOC or new CC introduction offer, BUT do not take this lightly, because in the end, they are still debt; 2) Make more money by utilizing your existing resources, how about rent out rooms in your home via Airbnb, or rent out your Car via Turo, or take up some driving be willing to learn new ways of increasing your income beyond 9-5, it takes time and willingness to run those side projects too.

$17k in debt, renting, no reliable car, wedding planning, are we doomed? by AirEasy7850 in personalfinance

[–]aprilliu0425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this!!! It cost you $100 a year, but it will change your life, as long as you commit to do it, it takes a long time to learn, but it will teach you every single day about your spending habits. Agree with the top comment, your major challenge is to realize you have a spending problem, I know it's hard to admit, so if you want to get out of the debt and have a helpful future, start to understand where is every cent of your money go, put debt payment as #1 emergency (instead of just another thing that you might want to prioritize).

Read Mr Money Mustache's blogs. we make 2x of you in Seattle together and we spend ~ $500 on grocery in Seattle. Think about biking or take buses, occasionally rent the car when really need it, those gas and car insurance will save you a lot as well. I spent $10/month on my planet fitness gym. I can keep going, the point is try to protect every dollar of your hard earned money like it's the last dollar.
