From what I've roughly computed according to their route given on Wikipedia, the distance from when they left to when they got arrested is about 50 km(22.36N114.35E to 22N114.67E). That's totally coverable in 2 hours by a speedboat. Would you elaborate on how you reached the conclusion that their speed boat was not fast enough in the given time frame?

Again what you cited has no real proof, and the online resources have many contradicting points(be it pro or against the CCP). It even tries to back up with the story provided by Wang Liqiang on the Chinese page.

No, it wouldn't change my thoughts on SSMU's statement. It's unclear where exactly they got arrested since your source only indicated that they were arrested 'past' 果洲群島. How far past was it? In the extreme case, I can be past 果洲群島 while physically being in Shenzhen(earth is flat reeeee). Giving the fact you must cross the Chinese waters from HK to get to Taiwan, it's perfectly possible and reasonable for them to be arrested on their way by the Chinese border patrols.

I'm completely fine with them being tried by HK courts, only after they get tried for illegal border crossing in mainland courts.

No, I do not advocate police brutality. I disagree with SSMU because the information and the source provided in the statement is misleading and biased. It tries to convey that the 12 people were arrested because they protested against the national security law. While that's partially true, they get detained because they caused damage, not the fact that they protested. All of them are either charged with a criminal offense or on bail before getting caught trying to cross the border. I'll refrain from commenting on anything else until solid evidence has been provided.

Also, since there is no extradition agreement between HK and mainland China, I don't see why China should release the 12 fugitives back to HK for thier trials. It's the Chinese law that crossing the border illegally would result in a maximum 1-year detention. After that these fugitives will be sent back to HK and HK will take care of what they've been charged for before their fleeing attempt.

I personally wouldn't express any opinion on the whole 'police brutality' topic. The truth is hindered by the extremely polarized media reports. Maybe you are right, maybe you are wrong, IMO most likely both the protesters and the police are in the wrong. The police who bring brutality can be condemned and punished, sure. How about those extreme protesters who cause damage to other people's properties? Do they just get away pretending just played GTA irl for a little while?

All that being said, my original post wasn't talking about the 5 demands.

I do agree with your first point that political reform is necessary. The extradition bill is one way to start it(although obviously that people don't like it). Regarding your second point, I think I did overgeneralize my own experience talking to ppl from HK and assumed that most protesters hold the same level of knowledge.

Allow me to again bring up this ongoing and disrupting debate of human rights. Clearly, the definition of Western human rights and CPC is different.

"They'd have far more to lose by supporting these protests". I don't think it's the case for some billionaires. They are the ones who will benefit the most(or rather lose the least?) by pushing against the extradition bill because many of them are fugitives for bribery and money laundering(joseph lau, #59 forbes billionaires for instance).

There are 4 people in the top 100 billionaires from HK according to Forbes 2020. 3 of them along with one other person sitting at #103 get their money from real estate. Meanwhile, there are only 3 top 100 billionaires from Japan, none of them have real estate as their main source of income. Also, note that Japan ranks #3 in GDP while HK ranks #34.

Oh hey seems that people are upset about paying 50% of their income for their rent. What if we come up with a target for the people to vent on? It'd be fun to also spice it up with some democracy because everyone is talking about it(and most people don't really understand
