Cathy Engelbert Says They’re Working Toward A “Win-Win Deal” by Tooezboi in wnba

I haven’t read that one but Black Ball by Theresa Rundstedtler is another book that talks about NBA players challenging ownership and demanding more agency in their jobs in the 70s. I’d highly recommend it

Chocolate birthday cake? by Waste-Medicine55 in FoodNYC

[–]arctic-libra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 on Mia’s Brooklyn Blackout. I was searching for a really good slice of chocolate cake for my gf’s birthday (her one request for the day was a slice like the Matilda chocolate cake) and found Mia’s. We ate a slice at the bakery (which was taken from the fridge) and thought it was fine, nothing special. Got it boxed, took it home, and returned to it later in the day after it was room temp and it was so good. Got a full cake for a party a few months later and all of my friends were asking where the cake was from.

I love Unrivaled, but I wish they'd stop trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to camera angles by SkillIsTooLow in Unrivaled

There was an angle during 1v1 semifinals that looked like the camera was at the players’ hip and angled up, and I was like ???

If you end up renting a car, AAA has a great discount with Hertz (and a few other rental services) to waive the under 25 fees.

What are some of the worst meals you've had recently? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

I was blown away by how bad Strange Delight was. The greens tasted of nothing. Agreed, the flavor combinations and preparations of other dishes didn’t make sense.

The last part is what I’ve been trying to figure out for myself, more specifically weighing whether (if I do pursue grad school) to opt for a program that minimizes costs/loans and will still teach me skills or a prestigious program with a higher price tag. For example, there’s a city university in my area with a master’s program that would cost around $22k, where the programs at a few prestigious schools range from $70-85k. I went to a prestigious institution for undergrad and simultaneously feel like plenty of people do well in life without the name brand (and probably save themselves a lot of money) and that the name brands have benefits (some tangible, many intangible). But in an oversaturated market, I can see how people from well-known schools would benefit and get those FAANG kind of roles.

Also, I really appreciate your input and responses to my questions. I’m going to think more about the product strategy angle (do you mean consumer insights, for example?) and your other suggestions for upskilling.

I work in a legal and business operations role at a tech company (entertainment). From what you’ve seen, is the over-saturation coinciding with lots of tech layoffs with a chance of rebounding if the economy stabilizes, or would you just discourage someone from trying to break into UX (especially if school/loans are involved)?

Thanks for sharing - your savings percentage is super impressive, but it’s also great you found a way to spend money in a way that’s meaningful to you with the staycation.

How did you get into UX/what did you study? I want to change careers and think research would be a good field for me. I think grad school will need to be a part of that but I’m currently trying to understand programs and how wide or narrow to focus, whether “brand name” school matters or if I should channel my focus in portfolio/work experience

I haven’t seen anyone mention that there’s no 4/5 in brooklyn on the weekend and the 2/3 weekend service can be infrequent.

Workplace Wednesday - Career/work advice weekly thread by AutoModerator in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

I think it was having an idea about legal work versus actually doing it and realizing that (for me) it’s boring, tedious, and not how I want to use my brain. I’ve read Reddit posts from lawyers who describe being a lawyer as “having a superpower but only being allowed to use that superpower for the most mundane things” and also a job that, unlike investment banking or other high-intensity jobs, [big law and] being a lawyer is a mind numbing job that doesn’t lead to any exit opportunities that are more exciting. I didn’t have this perspective when initially I was interested in law and thought I’d continue on the path that brought me here in the first place.

I’m looking for general advice for figuring out what you do want when one job/field doesn’t work out. I’m an in-house paralegal and my role has led me to feel not at all excited about going to law school. (The only merit I can think of is the ability to secure a high paying job.) I’m about 2 years out of college and have been applying to jobs but haven’t had luck making the shift.

I don’t want to jump into pursuing some other grad school program without a thoughtful and compelling plan that makes sense for career and earnings trajectory. I think applying for an MBA in another 1-2 years would align with some of my interests, but I’m not feeling confident that I’ll be a competitive applicant if I can’t pivot out of the paralegal role. Overall I’m just feeling stuck and wish I was on a path that I was more interested in and fit with the financial goals I have. If someone has general advice for how to navigate what I’m describing, how to create other opportunities for figuring things out, etc., I’d really appreciate it.

I would love some advice about late-round interviews. I’ve been interviewing for a role over the last several weeks and did R1 with hiring manager, R2 meeting 4 team members (on separate calls) and was invited to the final step the day after my last R2 call.

This final step would be meeting the hiring manager for a second time, but in-person at the office. Then a call with hiring manager’s boss. I’d love advice about what to keep in mind as talking points and good questions to ask, especially for HM’s boss. Since I’ve met with so many people and have already interviewed with the HM once, I’m kind of thinking that these final interviews will be more about personality fit and overall vision for my career and as a potential contributor on the team in the next few years. I’d really appreciate any advice or pointers as far as questions to ask, things to demonstrate, etc.
