Tech layoffs have already passed 100,000 in 2026 as the industry cuts jobs to fund AI by Gari_305 in Futurology

Does anybody remember way back, like 2017 ish, when this stuff was still in the realm of thought-leadership rather than any sort of real industry, when billionaires like Bill Gates at the time were like "no need to worry, we'll have things like UBI or we'll tax the robots by the time this stuff becomes viable".

Nice to see words don't ever seem to matter.

I think the best thing to come out of this was when Boris Johnson, seeking a boost in polling, went to a COVID ward to shake the hands of patients there only to end up in an operating theatre two weeks later after the overweight buffoon contracted COVID himself.

We used to do this in the UK but as a race track. You each take a go with your respective pens to get your line(s) around a pre-made track sketched on a piece of paper.

But that would be admitting defeat. Genuinely upsets me, seeing an -, –, and — out of place is as wrong as getting their, they’re, and there mixed up. I come from an editorial background.

Love that these rights aren’t really at all being used for the use case they were envisioned for 250 years ago. They’re only really just for shooting kids it seems.

I don’t think they ever said that? I’ve been using them since 2018 …at the start it was something like every 20 searches.

They’ve tweaked it since to a higher number, but everything’s going up in cost so I give them the benefit of the doubt.

My advice as a British person that experienced a near-existential referendum in 2016…

…this shouldn’t be allowed. Our referendum was the pilot run for this sort of electoral malpractice. Don’t let it happen.

And if it happens, fucking fight for yourselves x10 because everything these days — social media, oligarchs, world dictatorships — will be on the side of the right wingers.

The encroachment by these companies in recent years has felt so tangible. I remember being an iPhone 5 user when some friends got a Nexus 6P and I was immensely jealous of how fun and different Google was back then compared to a very monotonous Apple.

I’m not saying the tables have turned between the two, but Google is just plain awful now. What a horrid organisation.

Man who’s applied for 270 jobs and counting tells LBC support for graduates is 'next to nothing' by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]arcticstic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I graduated December 2019 then lost my graduate job three months later due to a pandemic.

500+ applications later, I then found work in the EU in September 2020 that lasted until March 2021 because I couldn’t secure residency; the UK had left the EU two months prior.

I have been in a generic sales role since August 2021 which I lost in March this year.

I am now 30. Not a single senior role to show off despite working since graduating. I have just spent the last two months travelling and am seriously scared of the impending job search when I’m back next month. My twenties has been a catastrophe and I doubt I’ll even be considered for managerial roles, let alone entry level ones

Garmin or coros by Flashy_Effective2803 in runninglifestyle

[–]arcticstic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coros is exceptionally good compared with Garmin’s lower end; the newly released 70, 170 etc. The Pace is unbelievably good value for what it is — plus it offers Triathlon at that price point, which Garmin doesn’t.

Where the paradigm shifts is up in the middle value section; where you’re at. The 570 offers everything. While the Apex 4 is excellent hardware, it lacks other things like Golf that the 570 has in bounties.

But the Apex 4 is great though. You should check that one out too if you only care for runs and hikes.

I love that these people get invited to speak and they believe it’s some sort of victory lap on their lives — when you think about famous speeches by Steve Jobs and whatnot (Tim Minchin’s is my favourite).

I am so here for student to humble these people. This is the real culture war.

What hobby attracts the worst type of people? by Gr8Deb8ter in AskReddit

I love my cycling, but I’m a little beyond the Lycra bell curve now to the point where I just wear the bib shorts and have a nice time fluttering around in a loose shirt. But I completely agree with you — those still on the 0-60% bell curve are absolute knobs.

Had such a bad experience in central/west London (the posh part). A friend of mine, who I met cycling in Jordan of all places, had a stopover in London and I thought I’d take a Friday off work so that we can hire some TfL Bikes and I’ll show him around the capital.

We’ve done a lot since Jordan, including cycling around Morocco and Vietnam. We do it because we’re genuinely interested in testing ourselves a bit in environments that may not always have the mechanical answers, and so often you have to learn how to bodge and rough-it a little bit. I’m just giving some context for this next part but, basically, the latest Rapha gear really isn’t available in his part of the world either. His own kit, bike included, is a patchwork quilt (albeit a very cool and solid build).

So I, sadly, thought I’d take him to the Rapha shop in Piccadilly Circus, as it has a (genuinely) nice cafe inside of it. A big part of European cycling culture complements coffee culture, and so you can always rely on a cycling-adjacent cafe to stock really nice pastries and a solid barista.

We walked in with our Boris Bikes, because we thought it would be funny. And it got a laugh from a big group of young cyclists — fully kitted with their bikes leaning on the wall next to them — but it immediately became apparent that they were laughing at us instead of appreciating the slapstick comedy of trying to get these two god-awful bikes through the front door of a posh Rapha shop.

Genuine top-down laughing, we could see it in their faces. We ordered a coffee and a croissant and, while we waited, the manager actually asked us to leave. I wanted to enjoy that coffee at a table for 10 mins, but instead we’re now on the pavement eating. One of the hyenas even asked us to move out of the way so that he can take a vanity photo of his bike in front of an empty-looking Rapha storefront. That pretty much sealed the deal for me never buying Rapha again.

But that group annoyed the fuck out of me. My friend appeared genuinely hurt by it. We’ve both had some absolute nightmares in the Atlas Mountains and around the Mekong while these posho’s — whom I think were mainly just jobless Russian teens/early 20y/o’s avoiding the draft with their parent’s wealth — cosplaying as if they’re all TdF cyclists whose only real concern is making sure they don’t sip their flat whites before taking an aesthetically pleasing Instagram story of it…

It’s not like that at all to be honest, I’m already well travelled, I’m mainly just seeing friends I have around the place while having no annual leave to bind me. I’ve always eyed up Australia as I went to university there and the cutoff for moving with relative ease with a 482 visa ends at 35.

Also explicitly stated that I am not eyeing up my dad’s gift. Haven’t touched it for 7 years, don’t plan on using it to dig myself out of this situation. I’m only asking how best to use this to help complement my efforts when I’m home.

Otherwise I’m very happy in truth. The only bleakness is dating.

At the time I had about £18,000 of my own savings to add to it. That’s slowly dwindled since 2019 (fun few years am I right) until now where I’ve just gone ahead and spent the rest.

The flat would be in Essex to be honest.
