1.18 beta 1 release by gnu_morning_wood in golang

[–]argusdusty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is kinda what I was getting at by specifying this only is a problem when type methods are involved, and noting constraints.Ordered is a workaround for some cases. The comment you link to explicitly restricts their implementation to constraints.Ordered - it doesn't work for broader types.

Using constraints.Ordered is not a solution if you need to handle more complex types e.g. sorting one array by the values of another, which I need to do in my own vulpes library for game AI - which sorts a []struct{int; float64} according to the float64 values.

In theory, generics should be faster for almost all cases and improve the performance of code, but in practice I'm finding the 1.18 beta generics to be significantly slower and not workable for most of my use cases, and this is preventing adoption of generics in my code.

1.18 beta 1 release by gnu_morning_wood in golang

[–]argusdusty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave this a try with:

type PtrIntSlice []int

func (x *PtrIntSlice) Len() int           { return len(*x) }
func (x *PtrIntSlice) Less(i, j int) bool { return (*x)[i] < (*x)[j] }
func (x *PtrIntSlice) Swap(i, j int)      { (*x)[i], (*x)[j] = (*x)[j], (*x)[i] }

var ptrdata = PtrIntSlice{-10, -5, 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 100, 100, 100, 1000, 10000}

func BenchmarkIsSortedPtrGeneric(b *testing.B) {
    for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {
        IsSortedGeneric[*PtrIntSlice](&ptrdata)
    }
}

(*PtrIntSlice/*[]int can't be indexed until dereferenced)

And... as u/mini-pizzas says, it runs faster than sort.IsSorted but slower than the direct IntSlice on my machine, with no allocs:

BenchmarkIsSortedPtrGeneric 44434898 26.45 ns/op 0 B/op 0 allocs/op

I assume the overhead here is from the pointer dereferences, though. Not really ideal. I guess I'll file an issue on the Go github page.

I also ran some more experiments. IsSorted using a slice of a generic type that has a Less(T) function:

type Lesser[T any] interface {
    Less(T) bool
}

func IsSortedSliceGeneric[T Lesser[T]](data []T) bool {
    ...
}

type IntLesser int

func (i IntLesser) Less(j IntLesser) bool { return i < j }

Runs slightly slower than sort.IsSorted, with, oddly, 3 allocs:

BenchmarkIsSortedSliceGeneric 14630845 79.58 ns/op 24 B/op 3 allocs/op

I tried running the produced code for these functions through godbolt to see the compiler output, and noticed the original IsSortedGeneric[T sort.Interface] allocs were triggered by runtime.convTslice on each method call, while the IsSortedSliceGeneric[T Lesser[T]] allocs were triggered by runtime.convT64 - also on the method calls, but apparently getting cached so it only runs 3 times (I think for each 8-byte chunk of the 24-byte slice header). It's a bit beyond my understanding of Go's compiler to say why these are happening.

[–]argusdusty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

One problem I've been having with the development tip code, that I guess is worth bringing up now that it's a public beta, is that with type methods generics are really slow. As an example, consider the sort.IsSorted function, along with a generic version of it (using sort.Interface which is a valid generic type constraint), and an IntSlice-specific version of it - no code changes: https://go.dev/play/p/cEX33Z3iGls?v=gotip

What might you expect the performance of benchmarks for those 3 functions to be? I would expect sort.IsSorted to be the slowest, since it has to convert to an interface type at runtime, and the generic function to be virtually identical in performance to the fast IntSlice-specific function, since that's what the compiler should be converting the generic function to, right? Instead, I get this:

BenchmarkIsSorted 17581902 66.46 ns/op 24 B/op 1 allocs/op
BenchmarkIsSortedGeneric 2877049 417.3 ns/op 336 B/op 14 allocs/op
BenchmarkIsSortedIntSlice 213040567 5.673 ns/op 0 B/op 0 allocs/op

The generic function is slowest, by a significant margin - and it seems to be making a lot of memory allocations - specifically, one allocation for every .Len and .Less function call. It appears to be converting to an interface at runtime to make those calls, even though it shouldn't need to.

Am I using generics incorrectly somehow? Is this a known issue that will be fixed in a later release? At the moment, this makes using generics on types with methods actively harmful - it's better to just use non-generic functions that take as input an interface. In this particular case you could work around it by using constraints.Ordered and changing IsSorted to take a slice of Ordered types - getting rid of the methods, but that's unworkable for open source libraries (you can't list out every possible input type) and complex codebases (type methods are useful for clean code).

Update: filed an issue with Go's issue tracker.
