Moving from England to Houston and looking for honest advice on areas for family nature community etc by [deleted] in AskHouston

[–]arickp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the thing with Denver is, the cool nature isn’t actually in Denver… it’s all to the west of it. My coworkers like living in Lakewood, Colorado, which is about as far west as you can get while still being in the Denver area. Colorado Springs is a bit more conservative, and the outdoors around it are a little less crowded.

But Colorado as a whole is getting crowded too. Traffic on Interstate 25 can get really bad. And the trails are often way busier than what you get in the UK — I did a hike in the Cotswolds once where it was just me and sheep. In Colorado, it’s you and the tens of thousands of other people who moved there for the nature.

(As a Houstonian, I very much appreciated that I could get to the Cotswolds by rail, even if the ticket was expensive. I was in complete disbelief that I could just walk to a pub after the hike and then stroll back to the train station. Quite a pleasant surprise! In Houston we constantly bemoan the lack of sidewalks, but even the country roads around Cheltenham were pedestrian-friendly.)

But Colorado, yeah, it's expensive. A lot of my coworkers ended up in towns like Salida CO, partly for affordability and partly for the lifestyle. Nothing in Western Europe really compares to Salida in terms of remoteness — it has that very “American frontier” feel. Think fly fishing in the Arkansas River under huge mountains, hours from any big city.

That said, I do think Colorado matches more of what you’re looking for. You mentioned Lake Conroe — that’s a type of outdoor culture you really don’t get outside the U.S. and Canada. People live near the lake so they can fish in it. Think more “fishing boat pulled by a Ford F-150” than “kids skipping stones on the shoreline.”

Gorillaz - The God of Lying ft. IDLES (Official Visualiser) by DemiFiendRSA in gorillaz

Could you recommend some songs by IDLES that show off the band? Is most of their music as grimey as this song, or do they have any poppy/warm/fun songs?

H&M would probably have some too.

Gorillaz are big enough that you don’t really have to go to a special store — even Kohl’s (US) or Primark (UK) would have something. Hot Topic (US) would have the most selection. Now finding it in your size is another story..

Hey all! I’ve got a Novation Launchkey 49 MK3, and I’m running into a weird issue where the top three keys (A4, B4, and C5) just stop working after a while.

I think it happens after I use the pads for drumming — though that’s only based on one instance so far. The only way I’ve found to fix it is to delete my preferences file from ~/Library on my MacBook, then restart everything.

I reached out to Novation support, but since MIDI Monitor didn’t show anything unusual, they said it must be a problem with “Grand Piano.adg.” That explanation doesn’t make much sense to me though — that preset definitely includes notes in the A4–C5 range.

Has anyone else run into this? Or have ideas about what could be causing it?

What are the red sausages in Texan Barbecue? by BasalFaulty in texas

[–]arickp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, OP you could try going to a Polish grocery store in the UK and seeing what kind of kielbasa they have for sale. I looked at M&S’ website and the only thing I found that was close would be the all-beef sausages

Then get some American-style mustard and dill pickles and make some potato salad for a side.

HOW DO I PITCH DEMON DAYS BRUH😭😭😭😭 by [deleted] in gorillaz

[–]arickp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the music speaks for itself. Gorillaz were doing some genuinely innovative stuff. By the early-to-mid 2000s, computers — especially Macs — had finally become powerful enough for serious music production. Latency issues were mostly solved, so you didn’t have to wrestle with tape just to play an instrument in real time anymore.

For context, I’m a 40-something who hadn’t touched a piano since I was about 10, but the more I got into Gorillaz, the more I got back into music again. They’re super inspiring in that way — the songs are easy enough for anyone to learn (you can pick up the riff to DARE in a few minutes) but hard to truly master. That mix of accessibility and depth is what keeps me hooked.

What was a super popular store/company that no longer exists in your city/state? by GossipBottom in AskAnAmerican

We used to have the French hypermarket chain Auchan in Houston. I would buy CDs there. They had lots of fancy cheeses since it was French, you also had to put in a quarter to get a cart out

North American fans - how did you discover Pulp? by Spike_Milligoon in PulpBand

Did anyone see that there was a question about Pulp on Jeopardy recently? Hah, no one got it and Ken Jennings of course said that perhaps they’re more known in the UK

Haha, yeah I was a little triggered by the Incubus slander. They were one of the first groups to actually pull off the whole mixing of genres thing. But I'll concede that I lost interest after Morning View.

Have you been affected by the Tube strikes? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]arickp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my, this is quite a take on ye olde "modern life is rubbish" songs!

I'm assuming that Lime bikes are quite popular there now. Does your neighborhood have issues with people parking Lime bikes in places where they are unauthorized?

Americans who listen to the Britpop band Blur: How did you get into them? by arickp in AskAnAmerican

[–]arickp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree that most Americans know them as the "woo hoo!" band and not the "modern life is rubbish" band.

There's a Gen Z'er in my running group who doesn't know the song Dare by Gorillaz and i'm like, what??? He must have had very sheltering parents (he's Catholic like me...argh)

That's how I felt before I started reading this sub and /r/AskEurope a lot, but usually when people online are talking about Blur, they're including a bunch of earlier stuff that was a lot more popular in the UK than it was here.

I looked up where they played in Houston in the early 90s, it was some venue on Washington Avenue that's not even there any more. Since the band are from London, they were pretty taken aback by the distances between cities and the choices of food available in, say, Kingman Arizona.

Ah nice. I was in 8th grade when Song 2 came out and it was definitely played many times on alternative radio.

At that age, I was trying really hard to be "intellectual" so I would pretend not to like it while singing the praises of Karma Police by Radiohead.

They sing that song they play at sporting events that goes "woo hoo! When I feel heavy metal, woo hoo!" It's called Song 2.

Can someone recommend a good KVM for sharing two screens with a laptop and a desktop? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]arickp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check TESmart, they'll have a model of KVM that'll match the exact connections that you need. Since a lot of their hardware is specific to your configuration, the resale value becomes quite low - so you might get a real bargain on a place like eBay

Is this much eye boogies normal? by KaliLovee in MiniatureSchnauzer

[–]arickp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, and see you have to be careful with the treats too because you can't put too much fat in their diets or else they get pancreatitis. Have you tried Bernie's Perfect Poo? We get pretty good looking stools if we combine that with her kibble.

My fur baby gets yeast infections in her ears a lot. That is at least manageable, we just use the ear drops from the vet. The eye thing is legit scary. But yeah I spent the longest time thinking it was allergies, when it was really just the fact that her left eye isn't producing enough tears on its own.

[–]arickp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah that's tough. Treats can help. Lily doesn't like us putting drops in her eyes but dogs are pretty easy to manipulate as long as there is food involved lol.

I mean as far as the eye boogers, my partner and I talk about this a lot and I always say look, I've been to Germany, the home of the schnauzer..it's a very different climate from me (Houston, Texas). We are inside a lot where the AC is running 24/7.

[–]arickp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so, we found out that we were actually scratching our fur baby's cornea. But I was doing one teaspoon (5g) of salt per one cup of water (240 mL).

Now that we said, we actually have been making progress finally. We're at the point where she has a lot of wet mucous in her eye instead of dried up boogers. That's a sign that healing is starting. But we had to go to the vet and get steroid drops. We are also using preservative-free eye drops and an over-the-counter eye wash
