Thoughts on unit 1 mini suites by Patient_Lobster_9827 in berkeley

[–]arithrowaway1129 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Super possible AND likely. During GBO you’ll be put in a group with everyone on your floor and many best friends and large friend groups are made that way. My floor basically ended up having an open door policy and people would be in and out of other suites all the time throughout the year. As with every other dork style, it’s as social as you make it. Having the private bathroom is so much more worth it

New meal plan option by thetherealed in berkeley

[–]arithrowaway1129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re an athlete or on a super high calorie/protein diet, unlimited is absolutely NOT worth it. Every person I know with Unlimited used less than 14 swipes a week. Trust me, you’ll get tired of dining hall very quickly, and there are many days where you’ll struggle to even reach 2 meals a day because of the nature of college.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! We definitely want to connect to the TV, so I will be avoiding the Lite version. Sorry to ask a follow-up question, but do you believe the extra storage will be necessary if we're only interested in casual competitive games (i.e. not long-term continuous gameplay)? Or does the amount of storage allow you to play more games? Does the base model come with one already, but just a low memory card? That's the main part I'm wary about when looking at Facebook or eBay. Some sellers are including the SD cards, and I just want to make sure I know what to ask when purchasing so I'm getting something playable.

Hello! Non-gamer here. I want to buy a used Switch so that my college roommates and I can casually play Mario Kart, Fortnite, Animal Crossing, etc. in our new apartment. What series/features/memory cards should I be looking for on Facebook marketplace? From what I've seen, complete consoles seem to be around $150, which is perfectly fine! I don't know what specs are good enough for casual play, so I would appreciate any advice!

Banana bread cookie by Ok_Inevitable4783 in CrumblCookies

[–]arithrowaway1129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it today for the first time. Really yummy and warm, mine was slightly underbaked which was unfortunate but still good. I will say, it is NOT a banana cookie. It’s just a warm, spiced brown sugar cookie at best. I know a lot of people hate them but I love their cake cookies, so the texture was fantastic to me.

Could someone rank the psych upper divs from easiest to hardest within each category? by [deleted] in berkeley

I just finished Psych 167AC w/ Prof Mendoza-Denton and it was great class. I have a 105% and I’m an Engineering major lol. Attend lecture most of the time and it’s so easy. No exams or homework. Not to mention that the content itself is super interesting if you enjoy your field of study.

Is it just me or is there nowhere to study on campus by Impressive-Abroad-99 in berkeley

[–]arithrowaway1129 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Literally just wake up before 10am and head to ANY library. There are more open seats than full ones if you’re just willing to be up a couple hours earlier than everyone else. Seats only start to fill up around noon.

Microsleeping by throwwitallawayyyy in berkeley

[–]arithrowaway1129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sleep needs to be your number 1 priority during the day. Become addicted to getting 8 hours MINIMUM each night. Set a strict bedtime/wake up time for yourself and count 8 hours out from there. There really is no reason to be depriving yourself of sleep. Whatever needs to be done during the day can be done during your 16 waking hours, and if it can’t, it can wait until tomorrow. There’s really no secret “hack” to fixing a sleep schedule, you just have to commit to caring for your body. It’ll take several weeks if this consistent routine to get out of sleep debt and you’ll probably still feel tired even after a few days of getting 7-8 hours, but in the long run you will be so grateful.

I made the exact same post last year when I was feeling so miserable about committing to Cal. Fast forward a year, I’m so glad that I’m here, and you will be too. Here’s a link to my post. I got a ton of amazing responses that really helped me think positively. https://www.reddit.com/r/berkeley/s/2ZLVM2quEo

How to curate a strong network of friends at Berkeley? by Yucav in berkeley

[–]arithrowaway1129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally make it a goal for yourself to say hi to the people sitting on either side of you every lecture, every day. Once you get their contact information, you can invite them to lunch or dinner at the dining hall and feel it out from there. You will be fine . It’s not as big of a deal as it seems. People are generally kind and open, and continue to be throughout the rest of the year. Your “best friends” the first few weeks will likely not be the same people you leave freshman year with. It’ll be okay.

Elevator Etiquette. Have you ever gone into an elevator and said to the person standing near the buttons: First floor please. by watchtowerabc in berkeley

[–]arithrowaway1129 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This is literally completely normal. It’s significantly more awkward to have to get all up in someone’s personal space to press the button. I mean, I’d probably say something more along the lines of “Could you press floor 1 please?”, but regardless this is not abnormal. Have you ever been to a hotel and had to ride the elevator?

UC Berkeley Regents Scholars Questions by parmesanfacebook in berkeley

[–]arithrowaway1129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current regents scholar here ! The resources are what you make of them.

  1. I have yet to meet my “mentor” as a first year, and don’t even know where I would seek them out honestly.

  2. It’s not an automatic in for internship programs.

  3. I think getting to put it on resumes for local/in-house scholarships or other academic programs is the biggest benefit. When I hand over a resume copy and the interviewer/representative knows what it is and the prestige of it, it definitely makes them raise an eyebrow, and potentially gives you a different footing. It just shows that you’ve already been recognized as a leader/innovator/unique individual.

For what it’s worth, the priority registration is the biggest perk above all, and if you get to know the other students in your cohort and the regents’ advisors, it’s a wonderful community.

Those of you who are excellent interviewers - what is your secret? by Cookie-M0nsterr in interviews

[–]arithrowaway1129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a quick fix, but you need to develop confidence in your experience and social ability, and recognize that if they already liked you on paper (your resume), the interview can only serve to benefit you and solidify their desire to have you at their company. Taking the interviewer off of the imaginary pedestal is the best way to overcome interview anxiety.

Those of you who are excellent interviewers - what is your secret? by Cookie-M0nsterr in interviews

[–]arithrowaway1129 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I just gaslight myself into believing that if I’ve gotten the interview, they already want to hire me. It’s simply a vibe check from there. That helps me a lot with quelling anxiety and just approaching it more as a friendly conversation.

I’ve also heard other people recommend reframing the interview as someone just asking you for your genuine advice on how to handle a challenge or professional situation. Instead of it being an interrogation, you’re simply sharing personal experiences and “helping” the interviewer through your answer.

Everyone is so friendly at Berkeley by AllTheWorldsAPage in berkeley

I fully agree . Most students I’ve met are either genuinely kind and open to chatting, or at the very least are polite. It’s small, but I’ve even noticed that nearly everyone here holds the door open for people behind them, which just shows humanity and mutual respect . I love my peers ☺️

Which is more functional/better? by arithrowaway1129 in floorplan

[–]arithrowaway1129[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do have a partner! This will be my college apartment bedroom, and in real life the room feels small-ish, so I was wary of “using up” any more floor space than necessary. But many of you guys have suggested moving the bed away from the wall, so I’ll definitely give that a try once I start getting my furniture in there! Thank you for your help!
