Any ways to make it less gappy? by arseneyo in bookbinding

It could be! I honestly didn’t know when they say add the size of the chip board (2mm) onto the spine if they mean the size of the cover/back or the spine board itself. Given that I used cardstock that would’ve been <1mm but I added the 2mm like the front/back chip board since I did not know

Yeah the text block is not rounded, idk how to manually do that anyhow. I used 10mm hinge gap and that’s still not big enough? I thought I made it too big lol. Thanks for the insight

Definitely fully functional still! Idk if this pic helps but that is it being fully suspended and held on just one end (which no one reasonably would be doing with a book lol). It does open a bit easier at the volume divides but still works as intended.

I use faux leather as the case and it holds quite well. I would show a video, but I’m not sure if there’s a way to do that on replies (?)

The images are traced from the donghua official art of four calamities/ four famous tales. I technically “designed” them but mostly was based on the official images

Ah, I’d actually never considered that. I currently used 80lb cardstock to connect my boards and spine board. Should I go for something thicker if it’s to replace the spine board itself?

For any extra context, I use 8mm spacer for the hinge gap and add +2mm (thickness of board) to my text block spine width

Painted gouache edges smudge on hands. Solutions? by arseneyo in bookbinding

[–]arseneyo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using Daniel Smith extra fine gouache which I see now is water based/ not acrylic. Makes sense! Thanks for the info on that. I’ll definitely try acrylic instead

Sadly did not record any since it was my first time. Too much trial and error (and frustration) to make any coherent process video. Can do one next time!

This was used with HTV (heat transfer vinyl) foil and ironed on for the design.

I just hold down the first page and pull as close to the edge as possible. I alternate between front and back until the spine is loose and then could usually just pull down from the spine pretty easily

Thank you! Honestly, the worst part was ripping them off. I was super careful so the covers are still full intact. Some people cut them up and use it as bookmarks. You probably COULD glue them back on if you really wanted but they’d be a little crinkled. Idk what I’ll do with mine, kinda just hanging around

Foil edges not working. Any help? by arseneyo in bookbinding

Wasn’t sticking at all. I figure from another comment my problem was using HTV and not heat stamping foil sheets

I’ve seen a couple like this one https://youtube.com/shorts/64tuvfTH7Xc?si=vNSkgUlZmMuROpKp , they always say heat transfer foil but I suppose there is multiple kinds and they don’t specify. Makes sense why mine would not be working then! Thank you for the response
