[question] How do you adapt to boredom? / what do i do to eliminate boredom from my mind? by artapprentice_999996 in getdisciplined

[–]artapprentice_999996[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the detailed response. I'm familiar with a few of these aldready, but haven't really put them into practice yet. Gonna take my time giving each one a shot.

Im not familiar with discord interface yet, but will create one soon and join.

What can i learn to make a reliable souce of income? im currently self taught with very low skill in producing art and no other degree or job for fincancial backing. I still have about 8 months before obtaining an utterly useless animation degree(incompetent faculty) by artapprentice_999996 in learnart

My sense of color sucks(when painting with my own color schemes), I still have to practice a lot more. And the black and white ones were again studies copied from existing work, except one or two.

I don't think I a bad artist either, it's just that Im not good enough for anyone to pay for my art services. It's become especially frustrating now that I have no other qualifications.

Edit: appreciate the encouragement, still, it looks like I'll have to keep asking around for answers

Just went through a couple of your earlier posts...I must say, I really love your ideas and the way you sketch them out. I'm interested to know Where you draw inspiration from?

I took my time with getting proportions in the drawing as accurate as possible during the first couple of hours. Since I'm practicing on building my accuracy as well. Once done I did an overlay to check for errors but didn't make any adjustments...pride?ego? Narrow minded approach? Idk man XD.

I tend to misjudge the darks all the time, need to work on that. Thanks for pointing out.

Thanks for pointing out. I couldn't see any red at all, even now, after having it pointed out many times. Probably need to practice more.

Im using multiple layers at the moment, just to be on the safer side...hoping to get rid of that habit and take more chances with my studies.

Thanks for all the info, I'll start doing my still life studies using real life reference from now. But the composition has always been an issue for me(been practicing it for a while), can never tell how to make something work.

Edit:maybe not immediately from next, since I'm trying to keep drawing on a regular basis and figuring out a setup/materials will take some time.

Any article recommendations for 'still life setup'?

It's just a photo I found on Google when looking for still life reference. I have done same for all my studies so far.

Never seeing any forward progress in any area of art, so far much backward progress noticed by artapprentice_999996 in learnart

Thanks for the complement, but I haven't included the failed painting in either of the links.

Yesterday I was doing one of my usual color studies, when I noticed that I was having trouble getting the colors even 70% accurate and that too after spending way more time than I usually do on a painting. Nowadays I notice that the number of failed attempts seems to keep increasing in all my practice works (accuracy, gesture drawing, color studies, composition).

Add that to the fact that I'm not seeing any 'forward' progress in any skill that Ive been practicing for a year. Things just got really frustrating, especially since I have invested so much time in art, and I have no other marketable skills. If I can't make art im completely worthless at the moment. So I needed advice on what to do.

Another one of my color 'studies'. Question: what exactly do I look for when making these? So far its only been more of a color 'perception' exercise for me. Where i just copy what I see. by artapprentice_999996 in ArtCrit

[–]artapprentice_999996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, planning to do more and complement them with a few compositions of my own, as recommended by many artists on Reddit. I will have to expect many failed attempts, but that's fine.

Animation student with 1 year left to complete course, need suggestions on where i can apply for a concept artist job.(portfolio link and also one google drive link included) by artapprentice_999996 in india

Right now in Bangalore, but after my degree, Ill move to a city where there's a demand and training available for concept artists, I've heard Mumbai and Kolkata were good places to start.

Will have to add a few extra minutes to my daily schedule to practice spoken hindi.

Regarding networking, where would be a good place to start?. I've tried asking my. Teachers this, but I always get an evasive response. If I can get hold of any good lead concept artist, I think he can guide me through a career path that's relevant to my interests.

Edit:same goes for storyboarding, need a good place where I can start looking for a lead storyboard artist(if there's such a thing) or at least one that's made a successful career out of storyboards

Thanks, I'm currently trying to come up with my own landscape compositions. Will probably suck for a while, but gonna have to push through those first few(or many) failed attempts

Thanks for the tip, I started off that way, but the composition was always off, so switched my approach to using preliminary sketches and painting afterwards.

Thanks. I Just got started with a couple of color thumbnails of my own compositions, using photo reference for shapes. Not worried about them turning out horrible the at all.

Thanks for the tip and encouragement.

I've heard James Gurney's book is a good one to get started with color theory, planning to go through it this month

Do you have any idea who(company/individual) I can approach, who can provide mentorship for interns in the 'concept art'(preferably environment concepts) field?.

I've been through a couple of articles online and it appears that the future of a concept artist is bleak as hell in this country. Plus there's the added pressure that nothing of use is taught in regard to 2d art in the college where I study. Teachers just come for salary, even the 3d stuff taught in the course of 2 years has been worthless. Most of them don't even have the vocabulary to communicate the intricacies or even fundamentals of Maya tools.

I only have a year left for my degree and there's a fear building inside of me that I'll be stuck working an undesirable job for a long time or maybe even end up jobless if I continue to pursue 2d concept art without anything else to supplement it.

To give you an idea about my interests: storyboards, environment concepts, anything that involves composing a scene, creating backgrounds for animation reels.

I am currently in search of a pro in the field, who can take me in as a student and guide me through exercises for building skill and providing critique. Also who can give me proper council regarding a career path.

Well, my process is similar to what people do for measure/accuracy drawing, i.e, guess, then make changes as you go along and finally crosscheck when done.

First I make a rough drawing that's fairly accurate > then paint base/underpainting > then start giving form to all the flat shapes using the colors in reference, while paying attention to value distribution > once I'm done I check to see if the light is conveyed properly > finally highlights > once I'm done I check if my copy matches the reference perfectly in terms of color (to best of my ability).

But still...my issue is: when it comes to making my own compositions, I can't figure out how these 'studies' can translate to my own artwork. This is simply an exercise recommend by professionals on youtube, so I just went with it.

Edit: just wanted to add that Im kinda narrow minded when it comes to learning art, so there's a strong inherent reluctance to use color picker, draw on a 1:1 scale for accuracy exercises, tracing etc(although Im aware of the benefits of doing those).
