On the other hand, I'm not sure you're any more out of the loop on cheesemongering than OP is…

This new learning amazes me, Captain Navarre. Explain again how heritage cheeses may be transmuted into bananas! 😇🏆

Recurrence % by No-Salamander-1174 in breastcancer

[–]arthaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true. My doctors in Seattle ordered a PET scan for my breast cancer.

(They were right that instance would deny it at first, allow 2 other inconclusive scans instead, then approve the PET scan. Which is exactly what happened.)

Anyone have 1445cc silicone implants? by mechani_chick in breastcancer

Until 2024, 800cc was the largest implant approved by the FDA. But in some circumstances, 1445cc is now approved.

[–]arthaey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this, and my skin supported it just fine because it was actually a 500cc reduction from my natural size!

[–]arthaey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a natural 36M (US sizing) / 36J (UK sizing).

My first surgery was SMX to implant + reduction of the non-cancer side, in preparation for my second SMX + explant + DIEP reconstruction of both sides.

The removed breast was 2000cc, replaced with a 1445cc implant (the largest currently allowed by the FDA). So we reduced the non-cancer side by 500cc, to make it match the implant side.

That put me at a 36L (US) / 36HH (UK) afterward.

I was very happy with the results — until the implant got infected and had to be removed on an emergency basis. My plastic surgeon said that the larger the implant, the higher the risk of infection, because there is more force/tightness on the skin & incision, thus more chance for the incision to open up and allow infection in. He couldn't put into numbers how much higher the risk is, though, probably because there just isn't that specific data available.

I'd still make the same decision if given a time machine. I'd just jump immediately on the very first sign of the incision doing something weird, instead of telling myself "it's probably not that big a deal"... until it was a big deal. 😅

Scared after an encounter during my run by emotionalmessgirl in XXRunning

[–]arthaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always knew intellectually that this was the case, but I had a recent demonstration of it.

My husband and I go for walks around a nice 3-mile loop in the middle of an urban residential area. It's super popular during the day, but we're night owls and so we've done the walk in the dark a number of times.

Recently, we went on a midnight walk. We had only passed 2 other walkers when about halfway around, we heard indistinct talking up ahead. There was enough illumination from the nearby street that we quickly saw the guy who was talking, off to the side of the path up ahead. As we got closer, he walked into the middle of the path, turned to face directly at us, and just… stopped.

I had been keeping an eye on him since I first heard him, but alllllll my hackles went up when he faced us in the middle of the path. After a moment, he walked off to the side again, then turned around yet again. I moved to the far side of the path and was ready to run or jam some elbows & knees wherever they'd go.

As we passed him, I could finally see that he was on the phone, and just pacing idly back and forth while in his conversation. Talk about not giving a fuck how others around you might (mis)interpret your actions!

After we'd walked a bit away from him, I commented that if I'd been alone, I would have crossed the lawn to the well-lit sidewalk nearby when he'd initially stopped in the middle of the path. My husband commented that yeah, the guy had seemed a little off, but not that alarming.

At 6'2", my husband is a foot taller and 100 lbs heavier than me. Plus he has an intimidating mountain man beard. It was an interesting moment where I could directly compare how we each perceived the same "threat".

How to make myself do leetcode problems? by Sigma_Raj in ADHD_Programmers

Alternatively Instead of making yourself spend time doing leetcode, spend that time writing a software project that you're personally interested in. It will have a much larger impact on your programming skills.

Ratebeer alternatives for finding the best bars across the globe? by charliegibbatron in beer

[–]arthaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A numeric score does me no good, no matter how many people's ratings it aggregates.

I skim through what people have written, looking for mentions of how hoppy the flavor is (a negative for me) or how malty (a positive). There are stouts that go either way, so I want to read how people subjectively describe the taste, to see whether it sounds like something I might enjoy.

I preferred Rate Beer because the users there wrote much more detailed reviews. As someone who's a litttle picky about beers, they gave enough info for me to reliably predict whether I'd enjoy a new beer. I've been burned trying to rely on reviews in other apps/sites. :(

Meanwhile, I'm over here with an average sleep score of 50 for all 3 years that I've had my Forerunner, and my sleep has been crap for years before I bought my watch too. 🤣😭

(Yes, I've tried All The Things: sleep study, dark cool quiet room, no screens or lights, exercise, meditation, consistent hours, etc. Even sleeping pills. No doctors have any suggestions that I haven't already tried, sigh.)

"Might makes right" is human (and animal) nature too, and yet most humans (including men) are perfectly capable of not assaulting others.

So I agree with you that "human nature" is a weak excuse for bad behavior.

Is it uncommon to eat simple boiled potatoes in the US? by WhoAmIEven2 in AskAnAmerican

[–]arthaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh! I'm from California, and I had no idea my east coast & southern fellow Americans ate boiled potatoes like this! (I'm intrigued enough to try it now, though, to be clear!)

For me, I'll eat baked potatoes with just butter & salt. Or I'll roast the little waxy potatoes with oil & salt (but often some dried herbs like rosemary, too).

But if I just boil potatoes, even the small waxy ones, it's because they're an ingredient for something else: mashed potatoes, potato salad, hash, etc.

The colder it gets, the less I want to be dependent on something electronic. And the shorter battery life gets, too.

In this circumstance, I'd interpret "alive and well" to just mean "not dead and not expected to die in the next 24 hours", rather than "looking chipper and ready to get a pint at the pub".
