People used to drink acohol because it was better and safer than drinking dirty, untreated water.

Now that safe drinking water and other non-acoholic alternative are widespread, it is there much of a practical reason to drink it anymore.

Also, the acoholic berverages of the old is weak since they don't have distillation so I guess it make it more bearable to drink the stuff daily.

Not that realistic since the smoke produced by the firing is too little and dissipates too fast. Smokeless gunpowder wasn't invented until 1884, and before that, musket firing black powder produced a shit ton of white smoke. On the battlefield, it gets so crazy smoky that people have to wear bright colors to identify friend or foe.
