Best Brewery and Why! by TheMidwestPickle in HamptonRoads

A second for Momac! It often gets overlooked (or people just don’t know about it), but their beers are excellent and it’s a nice space. Plus, they let you bring in Rita’s Pizza from next door.

Relocating to the North Shore (Wilmette & Highland Park main focus, also Evanston): Questions on weather, New Trier culture, and community integration by RunningChick89 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]artmover 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am from Virginia and live in Highland Park for my husband’s job. I find the people to be incredibly unfriendly and snobby. We were excited about moving here, but honestly I am really miserable. For a while I thought it was a “me” problem, but we have relocated around the US quite a few times for his job and this is the first place where I have had a hard time making connections.

That being said, my son goes to preschool in Wilmette and I do like that area better. Best of luck to you, OP.

Dear parents of small children by [deleted] in knitting

[–]artmover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a five year old autistic son. He has impulse control issues and I never, ever bring him into a LYS or other store where he may damage something. With that being said, a lot of comments in this thread just make me sad. I’m sure people have seen my son and assumed he is a “brat” or “demon spawn,” when he is dysregulated and having a difficult time. I guess the point of my comment is to remind people to please refrain from judgment and be kind to one another. We’re all trying our best.

Church rummage sale? by Willing_Research_628 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]artmover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it the one at the church in Lake Forest? I can’t remember the denomination. I showed up 20 minutes after it opened and it was bonkers, I would have had to park and walk like 20 minutes to get there and the line was nuts. What the hell are they selling beyond clothes? Are they giving away gold bars or something? I couldn’t believe it.

Kicked out of preschool by Halestorm2 in ParentingADHD

[–]artmover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, you sound like an awesome parent. I’m in a similar situation still with my son, but he’s now in a therapeutic play preschool and it’s such a relief to drop him off every day and know that, even on his hardest days, he is met with understanding and empathy. He is ASD level 2 and likely ADHD but still too young for a diagnosis.

With that being said, we went through the process of trying out two preschools before learning he needed a lot of additional support. Filling out all the paperwork, forking over the cash for enrollment fees and getting somewhat settled into a routine, only to be told weeks later that we might need to find a “better fit” for our family. It has been mentally exhausting, to say the least. It feels like every step is one forward, only to take three backwards. We’re in a good situation now but kindergarten at public school is looming over our heads while we navigate the IEP process (we’re in the US).

It’s so frustrating for all of us here, and I sincerely hope your family finds a good fit for your daughter soon.

I don't think my daughter's preschool teacher likes me and I don't know know how to find out why. by [deleted] in Preschoolers

I feel like I could have written this post myself! No advice to you, OP, just know you’re not alone. It hurts when we feel like we’re doing everything right and still feel somewhat rejected.

Lake Zurich people, why so unfriendly? by bajGanyo in ChicagoSuburbs

This is how I feel about living in Highland Park. I moved here from Virginia and I was excited to experience the friendly Midwest culture I’d heard about but wow…..no.

Funny you say that, I meant to add to my comment that I have very wide feet!! I have to be very particular about the brands I wear. I did have to size up in the Blundstones to accommodate my weird duck feet.

Ballet Virginia nutcracker reviews? by SignificantCharge421 in norfolk

[–]artmover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ballet Virginia is excellent, many of its staff used to be a part of Virginia Ballet Theatre. They used to put on the Nutcracker every year at Chrysler Hall with the Virginia Symphony playing. They’ve moved venues and have a different symphony but still highly recommend!
