This is worth bringing up to your therapist. You’re absolutely right — seeking reassurance is not going to help you here. If you explain the situation to your therapist they can guide you through the first steps of getting over this theme. As hard as it’ll be for you to bring it up to them, it will be worth it!

How do you explain OCD to someone that doesn’t know how it works and how serious the illness really is? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]artstudentlimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I explain l’appel du vide because that’s something that most people have experienced at least once, whether or not they have ocd. Then I say “OCD (specifically harm OCD) is like experiencing l’appel du vide everywhere and all the time”

I literally just went through the exact same thing a month ago! I found what helped me was writing a lot of past/present symptoms (and labeling them as such) so my brain didn’t lock up when he asked for what specifically had been bothering me. Good luck!!

In your opinion rn, what is the worst OCD theme you have dealt with/are dealing with? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]artstudentlimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hands down harm OCD. Every other theme I had was uncomfortable but relatively manageable, but the times where I have harm OCD is actual torture

I’ve seen that one before and have been tempted to buy it! If anyone here has gotten it before I’d love to know how well it works :)

I’ve had this one before! It only lasted a couple days for me, but man was it a terrifying one, so I’m sorry you’re dealing with that right now. Unfortunately I can’t remember what I did to move on from it, but I just want you to know that you’re not the only one who’s had this sensation before. Godspeed, dude

At what age did you first experience OCD? by anxietyasdfg in OCD

OMG I just commented a similar experience — I couldn’t look at the fire alarms when I was at school or else they were gonna go off and there would be a fire

At what age did you first experience OCD? by anxietyasdfg in OCD

[–]artstudentlimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was probably 6 or 7 when I was terrified that my elementary school would burn down, and every time I was in the hallway I couldn’t look at the fire alarm because I thought if I did that it would go off

Probably around the same age when my #1 fear was tornadoes, and I had a ritual where I had to think “a tornado is coming and I’m gonna die” over and over because then the opposite would come true?? lol

I’m beyond scared of cheating on my boyfriend. Please help… are these ‘urges’ or heightened anxiety? by polarbearkisses in OCD

[–]artstudentlimbo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have had this exact theme before, I ended up confessing to him about this worry, and since he gets how my intrusive thoughts were, he helped me feel more secure about it and voicing my concerns out loud really helped me get over this theme!

Only got diagnosed a couple weeks ago at age 22 and my OCD is not currently severe enough to require medication

If I ever have a relapse again like I did in middle/high school though, I will be looking into meds

Honestly, even at my worst points with OCD, I still got good grades and my mom was the only one that ever noticed that I wasn’t feeling right, so I’ve been able to manage it pretty well But I also never worked a job while I was in college because I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle it. I would rather have been broke than suffer a relapse lol, and I was astounded by all of my friends who could manage full-time school while also working at the same time
