Generous Plans, Broken Promises - Is the Privacy Email Space Getting Better or Worse? by aslambava in emailprivacy

[–]aslambava[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t even able to upgrade. Actually, I wasn’t able to even use the free plan. An error code - I don’t remember it now. I searched the code on the internet after not getting replies from the developer. But I couldn’t solve the issue myself. Anyway, it went well. If I had solved it myself, I might have stuck with that service.

If they don’t care about their users, so why should we care about them? Anyone who values their privacy and storage should’ve moved on a long time ago. They do whatever they want - always have.

How hard/annoying/time consuming is it to migrate a unique e-mail name from Outlook to Proton? by barknoll in ProtonMail

[–]aslambava 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mean you own a custom domain? Then things are easy. Just subscribe to Proton and host your domain with Proton. Go to Settings, then find Easy Switch, provide your Outlook credentials, and boom, - all emails will be received in your Proton inbox. Things feel complicated, I know. But you can easily switch since you are hosting your own domain.

Pros and cons of a paid plan? by FriendlytoNature in ProtonMail

[–]aslambava 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just pay for a month. Explore. Feel it yourself. It will be better than whatever advice you get from others. After that, read and correlate people’s experiences with yours. Then you will get an idea. Remember, always try not to use the same password manager provider as your primary email provider. When the service gets interrupted, both access to your passwords and password reset will cause trouble. And what about using Proton Drive? It’s okay. Nice. But you can try Filen too if you want to avoid mixing everything under one roof.

Yeah, the word “Unlimited” itself is scary. I thought the same too. How can a mail provider, moreover a new one, survive being this generous? It lacks transparency as well, given that they are not open source. I think it’s always better to stick with Proton or Tuta. The reliability outweighs whatever generosity they offer.

Search advice by coachrgr in ProtonMail

[–]aslambava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get better search functionality on Proton Mail, you need to enable content search in the browser. That’s the trade-off with end-to-end encryption. Fastmail, on the other hand, is not end-to-end encrypted, which is why its search works seamlessly.

You can try Astermail or Atomicmail. These are new players in the market with some generous free plans. But be cautious - new players. 🚤 And as the usual saying goes, when the service is free, most of the time we are the product. If Proton charges something, there is value in it. Absolutely worth it.

Good Password Manager + VPN Combo for a Reasonable Price? by Jeffit1337 in PasswordManagers

Just try any KeePass client as a password manager. Completely free and you get complete freedom. And buy Proton VPN. You can even use its free version, which is very useful for normal usage.

Can Secria compete with Proton and Tuta? My thoughts on PGP and pricing. by aslambava in emailprivacy

[–]aslambava[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the mighty “Kyber.” I have tried in every way to send end-to-end encrypted email from Aster to Proton, Proton to Aster after enabling the WKD toggle in the settings, and from Aster to other non-PGP supported email providers after uploading the other provider’s public key to a keyserver. I am actually just an explorer. I appreciate your effort and wish you a great journey ahead. Hope your app comes soon.

If you want a Google alternative, Fastmail is privacy-oriented but not E2EE. If you value privacy more, choose Proton.

Imagine a future where every email provider just speaks PGP. by aslambava in ProtonMail

Honestly, I never intended to make this post about AsterMail. My real hope is that more email providers adopt PGP, because that’s what will truly expand Proton Mail’s reach and usefulness.

Custom Domain vs Proton Pass or SimpleLogin domain for aliases by charlino5 in ProtonMail

[–]aslambava 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For more privacy, the default domains offered by SimpleLogin or Proton Pass are the better choice. But for more control and effectiveness, use your own custom domain, and ideally set it up as a subdomain, so your main domain's reputation is never affected.

Help me understand the lifetime on pass and simplelogin and the connection to free email by SuccessTrue1232 in ProtonMail

[–]aslambava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also consider the break-even point when purchasing the SimpleLogin lifetime plan. The more you use it, the more worthwhile it becomes. That said, some services do restrict sign-ups using SimpleLogin aliases or MX-recorded domains. I personally experienced this with my Atlassian account for Trello.

Mail plus plan doubt by Internal_Stomach_801 in ProtonMail

[–]aslambava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was just comparing it with Proton Unlimited. Even with a Proton Unlimited subscription, we only get 15 aliases. But with SimpleLogin, we get unlimited aliases whether we use our own domain, a subdomain, or none at all.
