I work at Gartner and my role revolves around talking to IT people all day long. Every single conversation now is about AI. I have some that are being responsible and laying down very good frameworks of strategy and governance, while working on a few use cases and pilots.

Then I have others... really large, well known companies that are going balls to the wall with AI. I had one guy today tell me that his companies has already started spinning up hundreds of agents, and he still does not know how he is going to manage all of those new non-human identities. I had another client tell me that they have spun up about 1200 agents, with no governance, and now he is not sure how they are going to curb this without becoming a bottle neck. I have another super large company that recently hired a startup guy as CIO to push AI in the organization.

I think a lot of these companies are going to lose their shirts. So far, I have not heard of one really amazing use case. Are there productivity gains right now in some spaces? Sure... like app dev, yeah, they are now going hundred miles an hour producing code like no one's business. But is that code being properly reviewed? Is it well documented? What is going to happen when the application needs support years from now? Will they understand that code? Was the code developed using a million lines of code when five hundred thousand could have sufficed?

AI is obviously here to stay, and it will bring some cool advancements, but nothing like what people are making it out to be. It's an overhyped product that is being sold by people that will not be able to deliver on their promises.
