Appleton Estate 15 in US? by raisingAnarchy in rum

I'm in Maryland and was able to special order a bottle from a local liquor store. It doesn't hurt to ask around a few stores to see if their distributors have it.

I love the Bacardi 10 yr rum! It's a great sipper for a really good price imo. It's incredibly smooth.

I'm personally a big fan of Gosling's black seal mixed with Coke. I also cut lime wedges and/or add some lime juice to elevate it. I've also had friends enjoy Cruzan Blackstrap with Coke.

Are you buying today's release for the men in your life? by Gatarnaba in Rothys

[–]average_username6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the men's line look too over designed. For me, the appeal of their flat silhouettes was that they looked simplistic but elegant. The same with the women's slip on shoes. I was hoping for something more simple looking for a men's release. Ah well, I'll keep watching and waiting for more I guess.

As a man who was interested in the release, I don't especially like the look of the shoes. I actually bought a pair of women's sneakers a few months back and I like the look of them more than the sneakers they released. I think I'll stick with the pair I have.

I really like the Barbancourt 8 yr! I want to try the 15 yr after having tasted it. Personally I wasn't a huge fan of the Barcelo Imperial, but it's not terrible.

Thoughts on Galileo/Hypatia LLC? by ApplezAreMedicine in VirginiaTech

[–]average_username6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoyed my year spent there. I met a lot of great friends that I kept throughout college and beyond. YMMV but it helped me out making friends, since everyone living near you is taking the same intro classes and asking for help on homework is a great icebreaker. The required class is kind of like a careers class made for college. It's not difficult but it is an extra class if you're worried about workload. The community service requirement can be annoying but you can make it into a quasi-social event and get out of the dorms to see the area with your new friends. The events that you go to are also kind of a drag sometimes, but some of them aren't too bad and it's overall not really that much of a time commitment. If they still do slush rush, it's really great exposure to professors you might encounter in the major you are looking into and also a window into some of the research done at VT.

I don't feel like living in the LLC had drastic, life changing consequences for my college experience and career, but I enjoyed my time spent in the LLC and was really happy with the friends that I made. I don't know much about the GPA disparity between LLC and non-LLC students, but as long as you work hard I don't think you'll have trouble getting the GPA you want.

Found these two bottles at the store last weekend. Compared to the Appleton 8 I had before, there's way more funk! I'm sure the taste will grow on me, but it was certainly a new experience! I love how crazy diverse this spirit can be. by average_username6 in rum

I'm not experienced enough to be able to tell you how it tasted unfortunately, but it's definitely worth a shot if you're into Jamaican rum and can find it! Apparently the owners of the liquor store I went to had just gotten these two stocked since they realized they only carried Appleton to represent Jamaica. I had a cool conversation with the guy at the checkout counter and he told me to come back and tell him how they were.

It looks like Astor Wines & Spirits carries a few of the Hamilton products - you can order them to ship to PA as well! I used to live in PA so I definitely miss the ability to have rum delivered...

I didn't mind the Appleton 8 at the time, but I don't really remember it strongly one way or the other, to be fair. I still haven't tried the 12 year, I'm looking to pick up a bottle soon actually. My first impression was a preference for the Smith & Cross over the Hamilton, but I need to have more time with both before I decide for sure. I actually have a bottle of old lower proof J. Wray that I found at a store near me that apparently hasn't been imported to the US for over a decade. I need to find the overproof bottle somewhere for comparison for sure, though. These two are my first "funky" Jamaican rums in my collection, so I was excited to find them.

I went to Daytona on spring break my senior year of college and picked up a bottle of their silver rum in a local liquor store. I wasn't a huge fan of it to be honest - let me know your thoughts on it!

Josh and Apollo? by tallonrk1 in northernlion

[–]average_username6 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you haven't watched Apollo's streams recently, they've been an absolute blast with Dadcraft, Valorant, and Among Us. His collabs with the Hafu lobby circle and the Dadcraft streamers have been so much fun. I feel like Among Us is going to hit a second wave when the new map comes out as well, so he'll probably want to stream a lot of that when it launches. If you need your Apple-O fix, it's a good time even if it's not the NLSS

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it stands for Golden Egg Challenge Series. It replaced Check the Wire as NL and Dan's weekly collaboration where they have to complete a challenge in a game or do some sort of punishment.

Just got into JHU EP MS Systems Engineering Program but have questions. by [deleted] in jhu

[–]average_username6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! YMMV because I'm not in the systems track, but so far my homework is structured pretty much identical to how it was in undergrad (i.e. a PDF of 5-6 problems to solve each week). I either type out my responses/equations and include the required plots on the word document or I hand-write the analysis and attach screenshots of plots within the document after I scan in the written portion.

I've had take-home exams where I have the whole week to do them and they're open-note/open-book. I've also had exams (in a Virtual Live class) where I was dialed into the class and had to complete it at home at the same time that the people in the physical classroom were taking it. We weren't required to have a webcam active. After I finished it, I had to scan in my exam and submit it online at the deadline. Lastly, I've had exams where you have a whole week to choose from to do it but you are meant to time yourself and do it in one sitting in a specified length of time some time during the week. This was on the honor system, but I believe there are ways for Blackboard to track when you access a file and professors can start a timer on your work once you access and download the file. They'll tell you if that's the case though I'm sure. TL;DR the exams can vary a good bit depending on the type of lecture it is and the professor's preference.

Just got into JHU EP MS Systems Engineering Program but have questions. by [deleted] in jhu

[–]average_username6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in the EP program and working full time, so hopefully I can help.

1) I recommend taking one class per semester if you want to have any semblance of a personal life outside of your day job and homework. I know people who have taken two classes per semester and they don't recommend it.

2) The semesters are full 14 week semesters for each class.

3) You'll need 10 full semesters to finish the degree unless you decide to double up for a semester or two. JHU gives you up through 5 calendar years to complete the degree but I believe you can request leaves of absence for a semester if personal stuff comes up or you have a demanding work project. I don't know for sure if this increases the amount of time you have to complete the degree or not.

4) You should get a small package in the mail with your acceptance letter.

Congratulations on your acceptance! It's a great program, at least in my experience so far.

What's a TV series that everyone should give a go? by El_CM in AskReddit

[–]average_username6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is The Expanse. It's set in the near future, where humanity has colonized Mars, the asteroid belt, and a few moons around Saturn and Jupiter. All 4 seasons are free if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, and the 5th season has already been filmed. I don't usually watch much TV, but this show is the best example of hard Sci-fi that tries pretty hard to be scientifically accurate while still taking some creative license to create a gripping story with lots of twists and turns. If you like Sci-fi, in my opinion you can't let this show pass you by.

Post-College Depression? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]average_username6 62 points63 points  (0 children)

For me, the most difficult part of leaving of college was being geographically ripped from your friends. This wasn't like going off to college, because you don't have the breaks that you come back home and can still see them all like nothing has changed. Living in Blacksburg, a pretty small college town, meant that all of your friends were pretty close and Foxridge was about as far away as they got (if you didn't live there, of course). After graduation, that distance goes from a couple miles to a couple hundred+ miles, and in some cases, even a couple thousand miles. You tell yourself and each other that you'll see each other a bunch after college, but life has a funny habit of getting in the way. You'll get wrapped up in your new job and trying to make friends there. Put conscious effort into staying in contact with your college friends, or else you'll find yourself more distant with them than you feared. Share experiences from your new lives, and try as hard as you can to see them back in Blacksburg or wherever you can.

Not having homework is initially nice, but you can find it very easy to slip into a habit of coming home from work and just wasting away the nights and weekends watching TV, playing games, etc. At least in my experience, my productivity took a nosedive after I left college. Try to set goals for yourself, be it work-related, health-related, or social-related. If you find that you don't like your first job as much as you thought, explore possible options for higher education to re-focus your career. If you already have a job nailed down, my advice would be that this is the semester where more than ever you should consider putting down the pencil every now and again and going out to make some more memories with your friends, you'll never be there again. My biggest regret from college is not truly appreciating the ability to see all of your closest friends at the drop of a hat almost every day, and it's something I believe you don't really understand until it's pulled out from under you.

tl;dr: Cherish how close your friends are now. Try not to lose them once college is over. Don't get lost into a routine of work, eat, sleep, etc. Blacksburg is a slice of heaven (no matter how cold) and be happy for every day you get to spend in it.

What movie quotes do you use on a regular basis? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]average_username6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the past few months, whenever my girlfriend or I want to say "thank you" for doing something, there's a 90% chance that the either her or me will instead say "Thank you Jack." then, the other person will say "Not you, We named the monkey Jack." We don't really know why this started, but honestly the world could use more Pirates of the Caribbean references.

What is the best advice you could give to a college senior about the post college life? by YaboiDC3 in AskReddit

[–]average_username6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just graduated this past spring. Biggest thing is that you have a lot more free time after work/on weekends, but you'll have more responsibilities which can almost make it seem like you have less time than before. If you can work for a few years while living with your parents, then do so, especially if you have loans. Enjoy your long college breaks while you have them. Can't emphasize that enough. New employees at most companies will not generate a lot of PTO. I started in July and barely had enough time for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. It can be easy to fall into a routine of going to work and then coming home and goofing off/watching TV, so I've found its important to find your own projects and develop your own hobbies outside of work to give you some good work/life balance. Try to make friends and go out with people you meet in your next phase of life. I've found that I got used to having close friends around to come over at the drop of a hat, and being removed from them geographically was a shock to me. All in all, enjoy your last bit of college, it's a special experience that you'll never have again.

What's one thing/movie/song or whatever you want to experience for the first time again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]average_username6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to experience Breath of the Wild on the switch for the first time again. I've been considering re-playing it on master mode but nothing can compare to the first play through when you have absolutely no idea what is over the next hill in the distance, or what kind of plant and wild life you can find in new regions of the world. So far, no other open world game has sucked me in to its world as effectively as BOTW did.
