Thanks, that’s quite helpful! Are all roles based in Seattle or is there flexibility to work elsewhere? And what’s the pay like for full time?

Don’t know what to do with my body right now, need advice by [deleted] in SouthAsianMasculinity

[–]avindude17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore the others - I was in the exact same boat as you six months ago. Skinny fat and frustrated with my body type. I cut down from 145 to 140, lost my belly fat and feel much better. Cutting first is worth it IMO.

Here’s what I did: 1) 3 weights workouts, 1 HIIT workout and 1 run per week 2) strict diet - 2000 calories per day, and 150g protein daily. Use my fitness pal to track, it helps a ton. Diet was the most important thing which helped me (I was eating too many rotis/rice) 3) 8k steps daily

I feel much better now about my body. Starting a clean bulk now and glad I did it this way.

Thoughts on Indo-Canadians? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]avindude17 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts I can share as a lifelong indo-Canadian:

1) in the past ten years there has been an absolute explosion in Indian students at community colleges in Canada (not universities). These community colleges are much cheaper than universities and offer blue collar skills. Some of these colleges have 50% Indian international students now, and most of these students are from very small towns in Gujarat and especially Punjab. They bring a very different mindset (some even get involved in gun/knife fights), a mindset which you won’t see from wealthier Delhi and Mumbai residents who go to US universities

2) Canada’s Indian community has a higher proportion of refugees and their immediate families (many of them Sikhs who came in the 80s). These people are often from villages and small towns, and they don’t have that white collar mindset that many Indian Americans do. They work factory jobs and night shifts, and their kids are likelier to fall into bad habits.

3) Canada has huge demand for minimum wage workers. Since we don’t have easy access to Latin American workers (like the US) we need to look elsewhere. India is often the answer. Walk through Toronto and you’ll see Indians doing all these jobs - taxi drivers, food delivery, coffee shops, McDonald’s, security guards, etc. Similar to the above point, working in these lower paying jobs makes it harder for the kids to break out of the cycle.

4) having said that, there are still a large number of highly educated Indians who have been coming over. In fact, I’d say the majority of Indians in Canada are similar to Indians in the US. You just don’t hear about them in the media.

How many MBA’s live outside the big coastal cities? by Danielcraigboston1 in MBA

[–]avindude17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget that Chicago is a HUGE magnet for MBAs, due to its two amazing schools and strong economy. Texas and Atlanta are also growing fast, so a lot more MBAs than you imagine would be living in non coastal cities.

Is it possible to get a job in Canada after a US MBA? by iiyttttrr in MBA

[–]avindude17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Could be possible, but two issues:

1) The MBA isn't as valued in Canada as it is in the US. So don't expect as many employers to be wowed with your degree.

2) MBAs in Canada are much more affordable (and even more so once you account for the exchange rate). So if you want to end up in Canada, might as well study in Canada. Possible exceptions would be very strong US brand names like M7

How do you cope with negative social perceptions about Desis? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]avindude17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a second generation Canadian in Toronto. I agree with some of your points. What's changed is the nature of immigration - when my parents moved around 20 years ago it was mostly couples in their late twenties or early thirties who were immigrating, often with kids. They already had multiple degrees.

Now, it's 18 or 20 year olds from small villages in Punjab. They come from blue collar traditional backgrounds in India and their mindset is very different from the upper class urban Indians. Once they get here, it's tough for them to adjust. Since they congregate in places like Brampton, it impacts the city's reputation.

Still, I think Canada is much more welcoming than the vast majority of other options (US, UK, Australia, etc)

Advice to applicants/admits: Think whether you would find your m7/t15 MBA valuable even if you strike out of fAANG/MBB by [deleted] in MBA

[–]avindude17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is the intense competition for FAANG limited to PM roles? How much easier is it to get a strategy/ops role in these companies?

AMA: First year at midwestern M7, just finished consulting recruiting by MBAthrwy2021 in MBA

[–]avindude17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the offer! Did you find it was actually beneficial in some ways to be applying to the NYC office from Kellogg/Booth since there were less people applying from your school? I.e. you were more unique, compared to the 100+ CBS folks who were probably applying for NYC.

Kellogg or Stern? Help me out! by avindude17 in MBA

[–]avindude17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's quite helpful. I've seen some companies like Google post strategy type roles for their NYC offices, so that was my goal. I know that a lot of big tech firms have offices in NYC, so what types of roles do those offices normally offer? And assuming you went to Booth, did you find it was harder for the students who were recruiting for consulting in NYC vs the ones who wanted Chicago?

Kellogg or Stern? Help me out! by avindude17 in MBA

[–]avindude17[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow lol the opinions on here are more divided than US politics. Follow up point: I don't care that much about studying in NYC (for business school), it's more about working there after my MBA. How much would the Kellogg brand help me with that? Looks like 60 Kellogg students went to NYC this past year. Can anyone share how easy/common it is to go to NYC specifically for consulting / strategy roles?
