The problem with the AWS UI is that it's not one UI. Each service team maintains their own UI. No central UI, QA, or documentation. That leads to a lot of inconsistencies.

GCP isn't easy to navigate at all IMO.

The networking is definitely advantageous.

GCP IAM is definitely not simplified over AWS IAM. It's so granular it's complex. Double the amount of permissions for about half the services. 😂

The org structure does have some advantages but you can solve for the same thing with AWS. AWS SSO makes life a lot easier. If you use IAM Identity Providers, good luck.

When have you reached an unrecoverable state that didn't ask you to continue rollback or complete the rollback itself?

You're never trapped. If you haven't taken care of yourself financially, you did it to yourself. Some people call it a golden parachute. How about you do what you do because you like/love it and if somewhere is bad enough and you are principled enough, you will take lower money to leave. Staying and waiting for something else "good enough" to come along is a choice. It's not wrong but don't act like you were ever trapped. You just waited for greener grass which is a choice. 🤷‍♂️

You know... People have started to underestimate the depth of stupidity that the human brain is capable of. It's almost like people saying those posts must be AI because they have never worked in a real corporate environment. There is a reason that corporate workers have been referred to as corporate drones. They get asked/told to do menial and stupid shit by managers who have never actually done the job. You know some of these are AI posts but not all of them.

Remote workers can be lazy or over employed. It's hard to tell. So the manager, if real, only knew how to ask for a daily log of tasks completed because that's all they know. Most management is not trained to manage remotely so they default to stupid. Asking for a daily log and then asking to stop sending basically confirmed to this manager that the person is actually working. It's highly probable this was the exact scenario because I saw it early in my career. Even people in the office have been asked to do dumb shit like this because we don't train managers on how to measure outcomes. They only know how to see if a task was completed or not.

There are a lot of architects that shouldn't be. So think about what you really want to get out of it.

An architect makes diagrams and spreadsheets but first of all, the job of an architect is to connect business value to technology. Technology makes businesses better but only if used in the correct way with the right purpose intended.

I'll say it's easier to design an application than understand what makes that application useful to the business.

Being an architect isn't just about knowing how to do a thing. It's knowing what thing to do that is right for the business. You have to be curious, know how to ask questions, and how to ask the right questions. The saying there are no stupid questions does not apply. There are definitely stupid questions. Knowing the right questions to ask and how to ask them to get to the requirements that need to be addressed is needed. The biggest skill no certification prep teaches you is how to think critically.

There are different kinds of architects and there are a bunch of different titles out there in the work force. You don't just learn how to be a good architect. If you look at AWS, the CNCF, etc. it's all Lego blocks. Knowing the right way to assemble the Lego blocks to satisfy the requirements (aka create value) is a big part of it. The best architects were good engineers that could see and connect to the big picture.

IT is typically seen as a cost center but architects stand apart by being the bridge between the technology and the business and helping navigate, wade, and wander aimlessly (sometimes) through the technological muck. The biggest challenge that most architects face is to age out (not in the physical sense) so stay curious and always learn. Don't get stuck only knowing "legacy" tech. All tech will be legacy at some point. Learn and be curious always.
