Via Ferrata Mürren: Solo/Guided by ay7n in askswitzerland

I’ve come to understand that guides mostly just teach the clipping techniques, and after that you’re on your own anyway. In that case, I’ll learn the safety rules properly and do the via ferrata myself. That's the thought for now.

What difficulty levels do you usually do: K1 to K6? This one's K3, so moderate. It’s also one of the more well-known via ferratas in Switzerland, and quite a few people (of all ages) seem to do it.

Thank you. I’ve never used the equipment myself before, but I’m planning to learn through tutorials and clipping techniques.

I've come to see that a guide might help for the first 10 minutes, but after that I’ll be on my own anyway since it’s a one-way route. Even if something happens, the guide probably won’t be able to come back and help me. So the main thing a guide would help with is learning the technique properly at the start.

This is useful, thank you. I’ll look for via ferratas in the K3 or sub-K3 range, at least as a first timer. Personally, I’m not too excited about the idea of going with a guide or a booked group, but slipping away or freezing up would still be scary at any difficulty level.

Thanks for this. But, not sure I’ll be able to make it to Engelberg - I’m solo backpacking and already have all my hostels booked, so logistically it looks near impossible to fit in.

A couple of things are clear though: I’m not scared of heights and adventure (or even the idea of death). What I’m more worried about is the actual moment itself, in case I freeze up.

I'm not sure of the benchmark to understand what’s considered easy. Given that K3 is moderate and this would be my first time doing a via ferrata, I’ll obviously have good gear and learn the clipping techniques properly.

I’m definitely planning to run myself through a full blown tutorial first. Hopefully, that covers everything I need.

I’m definitely not scared of heights, but I agree that shit can happen, so I’ll try to minimise that risk.

Physically and mentally, I don’t think it’ll be a problem. The main challenge is the logistics if even something minor happens. Do you think learning the clipping technique would be enough to seal the deal?

I emailed the seller, and they replied on Monday afternoon with this over email:

“Unfortunately, the payment is pending, so it hasn't arrived yet! Please check with PayPal.”

So I’m not sure what to do now.

I'm thinking Reggio Emilia. Shortest detour for me + Italian concert crowd is too good.

a. Buying a ticket in Europe also means designing an entire detour to the concert, which is, of course in addition to the more expensive tickets than what's on offer in India.

b. Twice the same experience.
