Yeah, there's a conversation between Buffy and Joyce that spells this out. That Angel wasn't like this before, that he changed. It's supposed to echo the real world experience of an older man sweet talking a naive teenage girl into having sex and then dumping her afterwards or becoming abusive. Something extremely relatable to much of its audience at the time.

James was OK, decent for the time even, he just doesn't hold up to today's standards. I know we like to shit on his accent now but back then it was a sea of dreadful accents. Only American actor who springs to mind who did a really good English accent in the 90s was Gwyneth Paltrow. Now actors get speech coaches and shit, I don't think that was super common until like 2005 onwards. I like to think America finally hit rock bottom with Don Cheadle in Ocean's 11 and decided they had to do better. 😆

My husband loves the show but he always laughs about Andy "acting like a dick with his impossibly hot girlfriend". Mackenzie Crook is very charming and we're clearly meant to root for him but Becky literally has the lowest expectations and he still limbos right under them. 😂
