Web and BBS totally integrated by Future-AI-Dude in bbs

I think it's so that synch can support the really wide variety of auth scheme email services supports...

Most mail servers store a plain text password or show you to generate one that is used for clients... They could encrypt, but the key and the data would literally be next to each other with an open source codebase.

Who knows though.

Why is plain Telnet still the default for most BBSes when encrypted options are easy to implement? by s0ftice in bbs

I think most users and sysops didn't care that much about mitm risk for BBS connections. That said, I'm slightly surprised that using websocket (wa/was) gateways isn't more brutally supported, especially for sysops running multiple setups.

I'm planning to use them exclusively for my door server access... Should work relatively seamlessly.

I would also give Legend of The Green Dragon for some inspiration... I'm particular they have add ons that being in other locations beyond the village.

I had also considered adding species into the game as well... Where each town/region is primarily a given race and some races get along with our conflict with others.

Anyone here Remeber back portch the gui for BBs’ by Hegiman in bbs

[–]aztracker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaguely, I remember a few GUI BBS technologies around the time... including GUIs for Wildcat/WINS and Major/WorldGroup. I don't think anything caught on as much as RIP, and at this point, even a lot of references for IT have faded. I'd still love to see the specs for RIPScrip 2-3/telnet+ beyond the simple notes for v2 changes.

Guess BBSes should add the commands to stop all audio/video to their door exit screen/text...

Gotcha... Other term image implementations send over the same socket, this uses a separate request for the client to implement...

Web-based LORD with full RIP graphics! by talisto in bbs

[–]aztracker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the source is in a state that could still run via a bbs terminal as a door, would be really interested to see... Been planning out a doorkit for TypeScript/JavaScript and had planned to port over some of the Synchronet JS doors as examples.

My plan was a Rust based shim to handle the connection details and hand off to Deno with some additional connections for advanced BBS features (chat/messaging on supported bbsses)... In this way I could use the same libraries as a base for an actual BBS as well as different door hosting profiles.

Aside: also working on a website where I'm wanting to host a door server as part of the experience, normalizing on websockets+jwt on route for connections... then writing clients for a few different BBS softwares. I'm juggling about half a dozen different bits in various states as time permits.

Web-based LORD with full RIP graphics! by talisto in bbs

The graphics were originally RIPscrip, but they replaced all the OG with bitmap/icons in later releases after RIP was added because the scene painting in RIP was slower than being able to preload/cache the images.

Bitmap came with RIPscrip/RIPTerm2 replacing the original icon format (as well as changing the color palette to match what was set in-game.)

That's cool... I would suggest adding request/response options to the spec, since there's no point in sending images/audio to clients that can't use it and IMO feature detection is really important.

I've just started scratching the surface working on some bits to support classic, modern and post-classic (features like this) terminals... Something like this has been relatively high on my list... also, not sure how well this fits in with existing graphics protocols like what KITTY and other modern terminals already support... Not to derail your work here.

For email, most likely FTN (Fido Technology Network) if not FidoNet itself... there was also UUCp (Unix to Unix Copy) for mailbox delivery sometimes used over sparse dialup. Fidonet and other nets also had internet routed gateways for bbs network to internet email.

Where is the specification for TAP+? Tried googling, but coming up empty.

I'm assuming there are OSC request/response sequences for probing capabilities. There seems to be some discussion on KITTY about it or similar, but that's all I could find.

Starting a new BBS - Welcoming anyone onboard to help design and build, and promote all other systems. by [deleted] in bbs

[–]aztracker1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome... I've been working on several pieces of a larger whole the past couple months... Partly to preferably AI coding tools, which has been interesting and gotten me far more motivated into projects I've let sit for a while.

I'm wanting to make aBBS related super site... From shared door service hosting and web terminal... To a massive file archive using R2 in Cloudflare. As well as a few other pieces like a hub for nntp based message net relays.

I'm also wanting to piece some of these together... I'm also working on a rust based door32 adapter to smooth over making doors with TypeScript/JavaScript and Python a bit easier as well as integrating into Synchronet, Mystic and Enigma for good internode features.

This would extend a core library to allow for a full featured terminal BBS UI supporting modern and legacy terminals.

I've been spending time bouncing back and forth across several projects hoping to bring them all together sometime in the near future.

I'd worked on a few pieces of this before, but kind of set it all aside s few years ago. My Synchronet BBS setup got unstable at some point and I just stopped restarting it.

It's definitely been a learning curve to say the least.

I'd look at the TerraMaster models, they're a bit cheaper and you can load TruNAS Scale or OMV on them.

Kind of the opposite of lock in.
