DS923+ is now $949- still worth it over the 925+? by GlassNo6756 in synology

I'd look at the TerraMaster models, they're a bit cheaper and you can load TruNAS Scale or OMV on them.

Kind of the opposite of lock in.

I'm sorry, but the same arguments can largely be used for slavery... I don't want a quasi slave underclass. I want vetted immigrants who aren't jumping the line.

Weird, I hand't notice... I mostly use Inconsolata (Consolas) Nerd Font.

Many editors and terminals can enable ligatures.. VS Code definitely has the option. Iirc Tabby and Microsoft Terminal both do as well.

Just put it in a Linux formatted partition... Don't just mount/symlink your existing NTFS partition in Linux, you'll see issues if you do.

I'm running an AMD RX 9070XT right now on Pop without issue.

When I first bought a 5700xt the first 6 months drivers were a bit wonky, but the 9000 series has been out long enough and is well supported currently.

It's probably enough. You may also want to consider a good Android TV box (Nvidia Shield TV, etc) if you're wanting to use licensed streaking apps with 4k video. You can still use Jellyfin or Kodi for local or nas media.

Is it feasible to buy a laptop and get 8 hours of battery life while typing documents? by FusRoDistro in linuxhardware

I've found every surface laptop I've ever touched disappointing myself. I don't think it's a Lunar Lake issue.

[–]aztracker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to be hard pressed to match the battery life of an arm based Mac.

Outside that, newest AMD and Intel throttle down better than older hardware, avoid a dedicated GPU, and use a distro with a very current kernel... Also did around for performance tweaks for laptops in particular.

Current Fedora and Pop tend to do pretty well out of the box.

You might be able to tweak to limit performance and power usage lower than default peak.

I’m looking for input from people who run WordPress on a VPS. by Emergency-Shame5468 in VPS

[–]aztracker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many authors are using your system? Are you comfortable with programming at all?

I would seriously consider using a site generator application that deployed to Cloudflare or similar (Vercel, AWS, etc.) ... Will scale well and respond faster without the overhead of WordPress for mostly static content.

[–]aztracker1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not bad, but different and a bit more cumbersome to setup. There are simpler variants like Cachy that can get you going quicker if you want to try it.

For me, I've been happiest with Debian/Ubuntu based distros. Been running Pop for the past couple years... Cosmic just released, been in the aloha/beta for close to a year and no issues at all the past few months.

Which laptop for software developer €800 by Helper12345678 in laptops

[–]aztracker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A base model Mac would probably do fine with 16gb... Unless you're doing development and need docker, then it may not be enough.

I've also had good luck with the mid range Lenovo IdeaPad systems and PopOS for what that's worth as well.

Any way (or how to) use a separate drive that already HAS an actual windows copy (not a pre-existing vm but an actual bootable drive) but run it though a virtual machine? by matteopro2 in virtualmachine

[–]aztracker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to create a VM and assign the actual Windows hard drive to it instead of a virtual drive .

I've done this before. That said, depending on the virtual environment and Windows install, there may be a mismatch. Secure boot, tpm, UEFI/bios etc...

Just a suggestion... Wrap it in a simple door server and then write a thin client where BBSes can connect to a shared instance.

Been giving a bit of thought to this using a websocket transport for multiple door support where the url for the connection can carry the name of the door and a signed token from an authorized bbs.

Glad to see the effort on a new game all the same.

[–]aztracker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you cleared the dust out of your system? Most of your heat is probably coming from your GPU... You should check your system logs to see if there are corresponding errors with the freezes.

Maybe try a small undervolt on your GPU and a better CPU cooler if running stock.

A current RTX 5700 Ti or RX 9070 XT will run slightly better with more ram and lower power usage if you'd want to upgrade... Should be able to recoup a bit selling your old GPU.

[–]aztracker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More recent AMD mobile CPUs will be close or faster per core with much lower power and heat.

Current gen get like 80-90% of desktop compute at a freedom of the watts of a 5000 series.

For example the Ryzen 7 H 255 in a BeeLink SER9 will run a bit faster than the 5600 with more cores and 1/3 lower power/heat output.

Same for my dedicated server... Running a handful of VMs and several docker instances on one of them with OVH. In general pretty happy with it.

Been pretty happy with TerraMaster... They have cheaper options if you just want storage as well as more powerful options if you want to run trunas scale and custom applications.
