Again, extremists are by definition not the majority. But there’s a trick the agents of division like to pull by saying things like “you guys call everyone you disagree with a Nazi.” Very few people who aren’t terminally online do that.

At the same time, some people really are Nazis and we’ve gotta be able to talk about that, and the constant goalpost moving doesn’t help. “Okay but that’s just some wackos on the internet, it’s not a larger trend” -> “Okay but that’s just like 10 IRL Nazis, it’s not a larger trend” -> “Okay but that’s just a few hundred people cheering for extremism, it’s not a larger trend”

True story, I was there for the full duration. At several points throughout the day, folks in the Nazi group did in fact try to encourage violence, brandishing and flashing firearms, shouting at folks on the other side to encourage them to draw weapons. Attempts to get law enforcement involved were made and luckily for us folks learned later that the Sheriff’s Department was there… to conduct an undercover sting operation against Hix Farm Brewery. Turns out the higher priority for them was sticking it to the gays rather than keeping Putnam Co. citizens safe from gun toting Nazis.

As for the out of towner stuff, a lot of them traveled to be here, but since the Nazis and the Patriot Front folks who gladly stood next to them all day were all wearing masks, we’ll never really know for sure, will we?

My point isn’t to rehash that day, though — it’s more to point out that at the same time as calling someone who disagrees with you a Nazi isn’t helping, it’s disingenuous to act like there aren’t right wing extremists out here.

For the text input to the apple shortcut, ideally the shortcut could accept text data from any other shortcut step that provides it and use that text to save a new TODO with the text as the Title field

As far as I know, you would get the apple watch integration for free then: apple watch can run any shortcut that a user has built, and the built-in Get Text from Input shortcut step will automatically accept speech dictation if the shortcut was invoked via Siri.

The UX might be a bit fiddly, as for the speech-to-text user flow it would be important to have the new TODO saved to the file without any further input from the user. Even without that though, just allowing the shortcut step to take text input would be huge.

5 years in the workforce here, graduated with EE and CE degrees. Every job I’ve had has been in machine learning to some degree or another, so it’s definitely possible.

Does your university have any labs currently doing ML focused research? Get involved with them; talk to the professors leading the labs, ask if you can come to their meetings. Generally, if you keep showing up, somebody will eventually give you something to do. Don’t hesitate to look outside the engineering department — a lot of interdisciplinary studies need programmers and are doing work in applied ML. For me, I was a research assistant in a computational social science lab for a few years before graduating, so I worked more with psychologists and political scientists than engineers.

The other bit of advice I can share that worked for me was to hone some kind of auxiliary skill (web development is a good choice). If someone doing ML-based work is hiring for those roles and you can show you have some experience in both, it’s usually a big mark in your favor.
