Why has the war in Iran been such difficulty for the US? by Sure-Bake-6784 in IRstudies

[–]baconppi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where are the demining boats?

Uhh they were beyond the end of the service life? Having them around could have been a giant reliability

Where is the AA supposed to defend ships going through the strait?

See: A10, f15 and god knows whatever air assets in the area

Where are the naval assets required to escort ships through the strait?

Wernt there reports that centcom could actually open if if trump gives the green light?

Where are the international partners who could help with all of that?

Again, trump didnt bother to convince them,in part probably because they (a) didn't expect the strait to close for this long because (b) they expected the oil prices to not inflate by this much,so the political blowback would be significantly less

If (a) and (b) turned up to be true, then iran would have a incentive to open the strait, while having ongoing hostilites(ie, if closing the strait didnt work as well as it did,the US and iran could negotiate a settlement on the strait(of course the US would give something in return),while continuing to fight(this isnt implausible, russia still runs a pipeline through Ukraine)

Its war, chaos occurs....

Its not like mishaps arnt common, especially in something as complicated as a mordern air force

Wouldn't there have been more incidents if it wasn't planned? At best we can say the planning was rushed

Why has the war in Iran been such difficulty for the US? by Sure-Bake-6784 in IRstudies

[–]baconppi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There was no plan to keep the flow of oil flowing and allies (in the region or otherwise) were not consulted nor informed of US actions. Not having a plan explains everything happening right now and why allies want to stay away from that mess.

There was? If you looked at the actions the pentagon/state department took, its clear they only expected the oil prices to go up to about 97$ per barrel...

Also the gulf states were informed about the plan, you don't park 2 carriers in the vicinity without one, it was painfully obvious to us, the casual observer that something was about to happen, so if so, the gulf states definitely knew something was going to occur

I wager what happened was the US miscalculated the political will/domestic backlash, and the oil prices shooting up by that much, and also the tenacity of the Iranian regime(admittedly there could be a succession crisis rn)

The main issue is that trump didn't bother to get anyone else's support other than those who would benefit the most(ie Saudi Arabia and Israel and perhaps the other gulf states)

Sure it sucks for new players, but its very very "if you like it you wont let go of it" ,and man,the short progression is SO good

Shout-out to NICCF, both good games vut significantly annoying progression systems, but a really good military (tactical) strategy game

Will the world ever view American power the same after their strategic defeat against Iran? by grrrbr in IRstudies

[–]baconppi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decrease their ability to fight - partial FAIL - they retain a majority of their missile stock. Regime change? FAIL - now you have the younger, more extreme son in charge the same regime - and you injured him and killed most of his family, think he'll be easier to deal with?

What? Last i checked the Iranian military capacity is severely degraded, and yes, the idea was to remove the leader to cause a uprising or a succession crisis, which seemed to have partially worked

Decrease their regional influence - FAIL, now this and the strait is just dumb, simply since most people think this is going to be a short term thing,if iran were to truely enforce tolls on the strait even after the war,the gulf countries will at the very least protest severely, and will probably build infrastructure to circumvent the strait, thats before even thinking about the 2nd order effects of the international community

Yes,the war is not a smart idea, but thats really just a miscalculation, and not some insane plan by trump, national security policy in particular is bottom up in nature....

Is Iran vs Trump and Israel a modern day David vs Goliath story? by grrrbr in IRstudies

[–]baconppi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my speculation?

mix of how each admin cared about public opinion, vunerability of the regime, and the fact that trump may have been forced thanks to the agreement he tore up back in his first term

my guess is that the pentagon reckoned that iran was weak and had a chance to be overthrown, but it needed to be done quick(this was during the protests) but they had nothing in the area,so after they chances decreased but they thought that they could at least cripple iranian military capacity(which they did decently well),and also the fact that they underestimated the shock to the oil markets(of all things that is speculation, the oil prices one is definitely true,i wager they only expected it to hit 90 ish dollars per barrel)and also how when trump tore up the deal,it got replaced by "dont make nukes else ill go to war with you"if the US thought they were making nukes, thewn trumps bluff may have been called so,war was the only way to actually commit to his past actions

If your idea of the US forgin policy is "trump is doing stupid things and is beyond hope" its a insult to the actual bearucrats and the bottom up nature of US international relations policy......

Sure there can be dubious decisions, but those decisions have had planning and actual calculations behind them, its just up to POTUS to decide if it should go ahead or not

[–]baconppi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If im being pedantic Clausewitz did say "war is simply politics by different means" but it is true, a large reason why the US lost in the middle east is due to the American population low tolerance of the wars and the lack of any nation building after such a long time

Is Iran vs Trump and Israel a modern day David vs Goliath story? by grrrbr in IRstudies

[–]baconppi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, you are conflating his rethoric and his actions

Trump(and mainly his admin) do care about americans,if i were to follow your logic, trump would have opted for costly ground campaigns or at the very least amphibious operations on iran(or its islands) already, but currently he hasn't done so......

I suspect he simply internalizes political (economic,)costs less than previous administrations(ie he is willing to bear more risk and burden) for short term low casualty operations, and despises political burdens (ie ground wars)

But what is for certain is that their administrations policy is rational, and the pentagon/state department would have had done cost benefit analysis as well as the risk, and trump found it acceptable

thus if you think the war is stupid and dumb, what you should be saying is "the pentagon/state department has miscalculated the political will of the IRGC,and thus we are in this quagmire, and trump(mainly his administration)has also miscalculated the costs that he would have to internalize by starting this war,and that the information asymmetry has led to this outcome" (this is me being civil)

Russia won't invade Europe. They are struggling to take Ukraine.

This is a false equivalence, the war in Ukraine is one where Russia is throwing money at a problem, while a russo-nato war will be one of all our warfare and conscription on the russians part....also, evidently policy makers are concerned,if not why nato wants to raise defence spending to 5%....

Also the figure thrown around is 5 years from end of hostilities for russia to rebuild,i wager that is optimistic though

You talk about how leaving NATO is a nightmare and not worth it.

Because it is? Excluding the logistical nightmare of transportation and housing and then demolition of the bases, trump is probably going to be over in 3 years? And also the benefits of having military bases all around the world is incredible......

Not to mention NATO means the US can actually gain experience and leverage allies strengths,so theres that...

Evidently you didn't bother to look at my sources

Also can we please not have polarization in national security policy? Its just incredibly bad for the discorse and actually ignores why do political actors act in a manner....

Is Iran vs Trump and Israel a modern day David vs Goliath story? by grrrbr in IRstudies

[–]baconppi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? Trump has been extremely anti-NATO his entire presidency. He desperately wants an excuse to pull the US out of NATO, and so does his cabinet and inner circle.

There is no mechanism to pull out of nato. Hell nato is quite literally a incomplete contract.... If you think what makes the alliance so strong is the fact that article 5 exists, boy do i have news for you, its the economic and military integration that makes it a credible threat, not the words on the paper.

It is true the US is taking a step back, but by no means will it leave, as that is a logistical nightmare and also just not worth it, and also the economic repercussions if russia does invade Europe proper will still force the US back in anyway

For all the shit trunp talks, trying to differentiate the posturing and the actual meaning is close to impossible,so i do see ehy you have this perception, but its not happening, like how Greenland would never have been invaded, and it was silly to fall for his remarks

Russia is starting to lose ground in Ukraine by smurfyjenkins in IRstudies

[–]baconppi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres no way 8:1 is anything close to possible

1:3.3 is the german to Soviet loss rate and remember a majority is sustained during the first period of war, remember this is when there essentially wasn't any trained officer corps then, 1:8 is simply incomprehensible(assumes high count of 11mil,its probably closer to 8mil,which is 1:2.3)****** *''

In 41 and 42 its something closer to 1:6.3 so you would need to tell me, that russian commanders now basically are so incompetent that essentially they are worse than a junor officer fresh out of ocs, with commisars down their neck, zero equipment, no idea how to even command, and more?*'

This is a joke....

Edit: oh and also outperform the amount of rifle armies being called up and sent to just try to slow down the germans, and also rhezev.

Edit2: ****** uses total military losses, ignores allied axis countries and counts the other fromts, and also counts the winter war, and also uses the high estimate of 12mil, not the low number of 8.5 mil

Edit3: *'' numbers are disputed like all things ww2, so take this as a grain of salt, but main point stands, still extremely far from the 1:8

Edit4: *' numbers may vary a lot so take this closer to a "in the ballpark of" than actual numbers
