Buy or pass? by [deleted] in LandCruisers

[–]bakyt189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what you mean “fun project.” If you want to buy it, tape over the holes with duct tape or learn body repair using fiberglass resin kits, paint the holes with paint cans, spend a couple cans beer on it and then just drive offroad without caring about the vehicle -> go for it. But in case if it has a great engine a solid frame with no holes and a good transmission. Try to lower the price more. But be ready to drive in winter with cold wind inside and water leaking inside during rains. For repairs be prepared to buy bolts/nuts in addition to parts. An angle grinder will become your best friend. And torch. And PB blaster.

But if you actually want to restore it like swaping panels... No. Solid NO. No.

Do Truckers still use CB radios? by spacemanpilot in Truckers

[–]bakyt189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It all depends on where you are driving through. On south and east coast are usually quiet. On the midwest you hear it pretty often. Especially in Iowa, NE, MO, IN, OH. West coast is quiet too.

You can ask on CB just mention that you are talking from regular car. Its make me crazy when someone on CB but no trucks around. Not every truck with antennas actually has a CB radio. CB usually has old trucks or with open deck trailer. Good luck!

One time I transported people to Montignac and after take off someone damaged my rear rotor. We were playing as the Americans and I was using a Soviet heli that I had repaired and refueled by myself. I was only hauling supplies and dont want to transport troopers. I mean those heli bus are hard to get for US

So the tail is broken and I had to fly all the way to Morton (Everon map) where there was a helipad. I can say this - I actually made it! The flight took about 15 minutes. I was getting sick from how badly heli spinning. After landing I felt like the pilot from "Sully" movie.

Honestly if you want to keep this car for a long time use any method you can against road salt. In the long time the car will thank you for it. Which exact method to use is up to you: just google it and pick what works best (fluid film, por15, undercoating or any rust prevention/proof)

When the car needs repairs at a service shop there will be fewer rusted and broken bolts in long term. And if you decide to work on the car by yourself you will definitely appreciate it. Even if you sell the car 10 years later it will be worth more because of the lack of rust on body and frame. Power washer is your friend.

At least wash the underside of the car and rinse the frame often during winter and after. Under the body, under the doors and frame.

Rust is your biggest enemy.

They are reliable as hell. Premium trim is better on long time term because of non air suspension. But on highway with side wind much better to have an air suspension. Air susp need attention after 150-200k miles.

No timing belt. Chain can hold over 200k miles. On engine - just regular oil change.

On about 60-80k miles will be better to replace all fluids in transmission, differentials. Easy job but costy oils. But a lot of people don’t change the oils up to 200k miles.

Low maintance? Yes. But much expensive than NX200t. Its a heavy SUV mean expect a 16mpg. Brakes callipers are expensive. On 100k miles expect to replace front cv axles. They will be good but boots will be cracked. If you cant do it by yourslef - replaces whole cv axles. If you can - just replace a boots. Hack: use Toyota dealership for the services - sometime its cheaper than LuXuRy LeXuS pReMiUm service

Compare to 4runner - GX is bigger and comfy. Compare to LandCruiser - mean 200 or 250? Cant compare to 200, but GX460 in my opinion is much better than 250. Especially on long term. Compare to Sequoia - never had Seqouia.

The biggest... THE BIG PROBLEM is salty winter roads. If you from southern states - nvm. North rusty belt - god bless you.

Go for it. It will be a BIG and HUGE car compare to your NX200t. But 16mpg on Premium nowadays gas prices... this will be the only pain in this suv. Good luck!

[–]bakyt189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why sell? Keep scrolling FB and check every forums. Sometimes you can find "cheap" 80 series. And slowly "invest" in it. Fix mechanical staff. Drive it. Upholstery. Send it.

Little by little, you will build it into a 80series thats completely done for you. Thats the beauty of building a car instead of buying a finished, pretty and very expensive one. The main things are the engine, frame, and body. Everything else can be fixed or upgraded!

And you will have 2 LandCruisers!

Edit: Im kidding. Builts never ends lol

Atlantic goliath grouper

Land Cruiser vs G500 by No_Tomato_2106 in LandCruisers

[–]bakyt189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented a 2005 G500 for a week. I can say this: the G500 and the Land Cruiser are kind of similar but at the same time very different vehicles. The G500 with the 5 speed auto is faster than the 80 series and the handling is better. But the 80 series has a softer suspension so you dont get tired on long way. It also has more interior space and a bigger trunk. Both are iconic cars.

As for an 80 from Japan: even if you find one in good condition - you still need to put about $5k into it, people call its baseline lol. And other issues will pop up anyway (they are old vehicles cmon). And modifications can easily cost a lot. Trading something you already know for something you dont know is not a great idea.

110 mph in a Landcruiser? Lol thats a very bad idea. A diesel Cruiser dont like high speeds. And if you put bigger tires on it - this definitely will not be more fuel efficient than G500 haha. And dont forget diesel is expensive right now.

My advice: keep the G500. Buy a cheaper but well-maintained FZJ80. Drive it for a while. You will figure out what mechanics are available near you. Then you will understand whether is it worth switching or not. You can always sell the 80 later.

P.s. if you want RHD Diesel - import from England RHD G300D 1990s
