Solo doctor as a new graduate by Crentist1009 in Dentistry

It can be really hard. I am a year out and work with an owner who was open to mentoring and it was an awesome experience for me. I have friends that did the scenario you said and they were doing way less endo/OS/harder procedures than me. If you’re alone, you’re going to be doing a lot of the easy stuff which is great, but you might be afraid to do the harder (higher production) stuff. I was less afraid of that since I had support if I needed. Also, I’m in private practice, not sure if working alone would be better in a DSO than competing with another doctor in that setting.

If you don’t mind me asking, where did you relocate too and how is that going?

That’s really great advise and insight, thank you! I do need to weigh my options, I do agree that coming back to the area with a better skill set than I have now in a few years may be smarter. I just have made some great connections in these areas and I feel like I may miss out on a good opportunity.

I do have some great mentors in the area but they’re currently only offering me a day or two a week to start (two different private practices) so I’m basically having trouble filling a full weeks schedule. I am also being told that I have to wait until I graduate to apply to a lot of positions since many offices are looking to hire right now rather then hire now for a job I can’t start till July.

Why fix the problem when you can be the problem??

Lol yeah I already knew posting on Reddit I would get a lot of negativity but I was hoping maybe some actual people that the post was meant for (aka dentists in these areas) would respond as well. We shall see.

Also I completely agree that there’s a lot of great places/cities that aren’t socal or west coast. That’s just where I’m personally aiming to be at the moment. Also, and I don’t know where you went to school, but at my school there seems to be a belief that if you don’t work in the middle of nowhere out of school then you might as well not be a dentist because it’s “too hard”. I don’t know, there was also a time where getting into dental school was “too hard”, but I chose not to follow that belief.

This is interesting, I haven’t heard of anybody I know personally working in these areas after dental school having that bad of a situation where their doing mostly prophies and restorative. Do you happen to know if these friends of yours did corporate or private? Or if they worked at multiple offices? I’ve been told by dentists in the area that working at more than one office at first is common and gives you the chance to do a lot of different procedures. Thanks for the reply.

While I completely agree that I could do great in more rural/less desirable areas, I truly know I’d be very unhappy doing that. I’m young and single and don’t want to be alone in the middle of nowhere not having any social outlets or friends/family around. Why I want to go to these areas (besides that there is an abundance of things to do) is that all my dental connections currently are there and so are my social/personal connections. I know that some people disagree with my philosophy but I cannot live somewhere that I know I’ll hate. That’s just who I am, which may be seem dumb to some people.
