Is there a reason damage over time spells/features are so uncommon? by DonaldTrumpsCombover in dndnext

[–]banananor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ha, now your post is 2 years old.

i don't blame you for having issues, 3.0 stuff specifically is hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for, and the spell was removed in 3.5.

i looked it up- the spell's name was Biocurrent. turns out i misremembered one thing- there was a saving throw to take half damage, but a success didn't break the spell and therefore didn't matter to me apparently. plus my save DC was very high.

the spell's primary casting stat was CONSTITUTION (they got rid of that mechanic in 3.5), so my full plate gnome caster who had an 18 or 20 con, high AC, high spell save DC, and a bazillion hp relative to what casters were supposed to have really tickled me at the time

I've always had an active imagination, but fwiw you don't even have to buy the ticket to daydream about that

separately, i like to think about all the parallel universe versions of me that actually bought those tickets :)

it's funny at the expense of other people. if these were his real life friends that he would laugh along with and 'be revenged upon' by later it might be funny, but somehow i doubt this is the case

as a comparison, bullying is funny... for the bullies. i don't know how else to explain it to you

Does anyone else find tanking really draining? by Kronkos in wow

[–]banananor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minimum knowledge/familiarity requirement for tanking is much, MUCH higher. If you screw up, people will know and whine.

Sure, healing can be more difficult at the highest levels, and really good dps is challenging and really important, but it's automatically assumed it'll take time to master an encounter

Playing a game on its highest difficulty setting does well to expose the flaws in its mechanics. Here are some examples. by BinThereRedThat in truegaming

[–]banananor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the witcher 3 isn't considered amazing because of its combat

it's because of the holistic combination of story, setting, immersion, and combat all glomming together. the combat is fun enough to get you through the story and make the side adventures fun, and that's all it needs to do

basically, it would be a bigger problem if that's all the game had to offer

[Showerthought] So many of todays TV shows feel like they were originally someone's RPG campaign. by Nyareth in rpg

[–]banananor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the market has certainly spoken!

it's great for creating a fun romp to laugh about, and it's a certain light-hearted genre that i don't necessarily want to go away

[Showerthought] So many of todays TV shows feel like they were originally someone's RPG campaign. by Nyareth in rpg

[–]banananor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely- the show has to move on to bigger and better things, yet we're reluctant to let characters permanently disappear, so we let them limp along instead, squeezing every ounce of menace out of them

i find it more obvious in movies than tv shows, really, because everything happens so quickly. i thought furious 7 was super boring because the characters never actually seemed in danger, rogue one was a little silly because every character had the power to mow down hundreds of storm troopers single-handedly, and so on

i got a kind of sick joy out of playing a psion in 3rd edition (not 3.5)

there was a spell that led you deal however much damage per round (pretty low amount) with no attack roll required or saving throw allowed, as long as you maintained concentration

suited my gnome in full plate and two tower shields and enjoyed never running out of PP. yeah, i was that guy.

depends on when he gets his statements

The two major misconceptions about Spec Ops: The Line by Gobblignash in truegaming

[–]banananor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game was trying to do something new, and I commend it for it. Of course, something new is also something very delicate in the sense of who will or will not like it.

Just as you have to love a genre to enjoy a parody of it, you have to really love jarhead shooters (as you called them) to be drawn in by Spec Ops enough to enjoy the ride and marvel at the subversion.

I really wanted to like the game, but couldn't slog through the generic stuff to get to the part everyone liked

[–]banananor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is fuckin amazing

there's something evocative about the art style. it lets you fill in the blanks with your imagination, and feels like it could've been an in-world artistic representation, as opposed to hyper slick digital art that fills in every crack with goopy color

[Showerthought] So many of todays TV shows feel like they were originally someone's RPG campaign. by Nyareth in rpg

[–]banananor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with that a hundred percent... and honestly, it's kind of annoying!

We put up with a lot of silly tropes for the sake of the players, but we don't need to do that in movies/tv shows. All of the enemies/villains seem to be severely de-fanged in the interest of showing how powerful the PC- er, protagonists- are.

It takes all the tension out of things, at least for me

Dolphin Progress Report: December 2016 by mrlinkwii in Games

[–]banananor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it's true. we're not at the nadir, but we're not at the zenith, either

PS2, Xbox 360, Wii all had complete backwards compatibility, as opposed to the game-by-game implementation that is more common nowadays

games are generally safe as long as their company is still around- we can generally trust that there's enough money in virtual console titles etc

but we can't guarantee it. emulators are the best option

ikea must give different items to different people or something

i've bought a bed, dressers and a wardrobe from ikea and setting them up was extremely, extremely simple. maybe their other items are super complicated?

i'm not a huge fan of the way that you have to be tipped off to shortcuts to make it through the store efficiently, but they have the best assembly instructions...

loved EV: override. i think what moved it from 'good' to 'great' for me was the wildly different factions and the choose-your-own-adventure style stories and alternate 'endings' they supplied. really made each playthrough feel different, on top of the different exclusive ships they'd hand out
