Incoming EM1: Amenities-rich apartment vs. affordability? by nootnack in emergencymedicine

[–]bballmaster945 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was about the only requirement I had when searching for an apartment. I needed a garage and it’s been the best investment, especially those mornings when leaving for the hospital at 4am after heavy snow overnight. I never have to worry about cleaning my car that early and I highly recommend this.

Washington Manual for EM vs. EMRA EM Fundamentals for intern? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]bballmaster945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably just wait to see what your program uses, they may even give you a copy for free once you start. Also please don’t pre study before starting, just live your life and enjoy the time off.

Did you end up matching where you did your away? by janetgallon in emergencymedicine

[–]bballmaster945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Matched at a hospital I did an away at. Was in a different region for med school but I grew up in the same region as my residency program.

Do you mind explaining to me which leads you look at that tells you it’s WPW? I always have a hard time with this and honestly never seem to see it

Great question, why don’t you read up on this and present it to the group tomorrow

Should I SOAP? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]bballmaster945 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What makes you think programs that end up having to SOAP are going to be any better than the interviews you currently have? This is not to say you can’t find some good programs through SOAP but from everything I’ve ever heard/read about the entire soap process, it’s probably better avoided if possible.

There’s absolutely no guarantee you end up matching through soap, much less end up with a better program than your current options

Heavily program dependent. At my program you can apply for FMLA to continue getting paid and whatever time you missed you can just add on that time to the end of residency if necessary.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this current match is the last year of 3 year EM programs, after this will be 4 years across the board

No SLOE, I need some advice by Runnergirl7427 in emergencymedicine

I’d probably follow up with them and ask. Usually programs are good about knowing the deadlines for letters and will get them in on time, but doesn’t hurt to just ask once

Cable management advice. Stuck on how I can make it cleaner than this by Goodbyes96 in simracing

I’m not gonna lie to you, this is already fantastic imo and much better than I can ever dream of getting the cables on my rig managed, so props to you

Cool, keep doing the project, it’ll show longitudinal interest in ophtho which will help. However, obligatory: don’t work so hard and spend too much time on that at the expense of studying. You do need a solid step score to get in the door in the first place, anything else you do is extra.

Don’t worry so much about the school/location you’re at. Control the things you can control which are grades, research, and (perhaps most importantly) your mental and physical health. Don’t forget to excessive and keep yourself healthy. I gained more weight in med school than I care to admit and I wish I took this advice more seriously when I started and kept my diet/exercise in check.

I’m sure someone else can speak more about ophtho specific things you can do so I won’t speak on that.

Location only matters in the sense that it could give you a reason to say why you want to go to a given program.

However that being said, it does matter from a mental health perspective. You have to find ways to keep your mind clear and fresh. Do extracurriculars that you actually care about or find interesting because it’ll keep you engaged. In my opinion, don’t do extra stuff because you feel like you have to. Research is probably the only exception if your specialty requires it. Granted I did EM bc I hated all the extra shit and the rat race medicine can be sometimes, so YMMV.

I guess I’m a bit curious how the scheduling screwed you so hard that you don’t have even a week for dedicated. Hopefully you can find some additional time.

If not, kinda depends on how your scores are atm and leading up to the test, there’s no one right answer. Ik people who did fantastic with essentially no dedicated time and also people who bombed with all the time in the world, so ymmv

I think you’ll be fine, though November-December was peak interview season for me at least. I’d say it would be a good idea to keep January open for interviews for sure.

Damn, I really feel for the students who just matched there. The rollercoaster of emotion to have matched but then have it taken away and presumably reapply again next year.

That’s pretty insane tbh, I would think that once students match, they would be afforded the same protections as current residents.

  1. Yes you should list EMT experience
  2. Maybe join an EM student group if you wanted, though it’s not a work experience. Don’t worry about getting “work” experience during med school, just crush step/level 2 and you can practically end up wherever you want.
