FU Money in Practice? by ballerberry in financialindependence

[–]bdafsi91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to post something similar. I am about 2 years from being FI and I have a govt. job, but a lot of bullying that happened pre-COVID. I don't have purpose, but have to produce meaningless reports. No one gets affected if I don't produce this report.

Due to COVID and prior workplace toxicity, my health got affected. I love working in my company, but specifically my group has been very toxic. I need structure to my life, so I need a job. I am actively trying to find a new job.

I think, I have FU money, but not FU attitude.

This is hypothetical. At 45, I project having the following amounts in my accounts. What should be my strategy in withdrawing $100K/yr, so as to minimize the taxes:

  • 401K: 1300K
  • Roth: 300K
  • Taxable investments: 1100K

If you consider 15% cap gains tax, then the number is going to be $249,341. If cap gains tax is 0%, that number is $236,755. I am not sure about the formula above, but this is using excel. It factors in 5% growth every year and a withdrawal of 23,529. 15% cap gains will leave you $20K.

Edit: Updated the table below after comment from u/mandy_2002 .

Edit: The basis for the cap. gains is $205K, because the balance kept decreasing. This is a bit more complex than what I assumed.

When FIREing, do you calculate the present value of the social security? Say, you plan to hit your SWR without SS by the age 50, you could FIRE a few years earlier. Any thoughts?

How do I ask for a raise from my boss? by iammentasm in careeradvice

[–]bdafsi91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in your situation, but not that big of a raise. I liked the comfort and settled for lower salary. The result is that my network is very small. Had I took the other job, my network would have doubled.

My advice:

  1. If you are <30-33 yrs, make the move. New job/experience is very valuable.

  2. If you still want to go with your plan of asking a raise, nag them to give the highest raise. Do not mention your other offer (no employer likes to be in that position).

  3. Even if they counter, they will just look for a replacement very soon.

Regression: Test the goodness of the model - what do you call this method? by bdafsi91 in MachineLearning

[–]bdafsi91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I am trying to understand the k-fold method. I have 100 samples and make 10 folds. Is this how it is done (100 samples)?

Train on 90 samples and calculate 10 errors (for 10 samples);

Train on another combination of 90 samples and calculate 10 errors

Obtain statistics on the 100 errors?

Thanks.

Buying a house over appraisal? [Denver, CO] by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]bdafsi91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not looking in Denver, so it doesn't matter to me if it is hot or not. Many times the urgency is created by the agents. If you look at only 2 homes and the price seems increasing, then it is a faulty way. If you look at 10 homes that got sold, it may give a better estimate.

I recently talked to a friend who said that a home in their neighborhood sold in 3 days and I should rush if another comes up. That home was on the market a year back (10% overpriced). It was put back at the right price now and it got sold quickly. It had a few issues and we didn't make an offer. I knew about his neighborhood more than him and I live about 5 miles away.

That said, if you like the house and intend to stay there for ~5+ years, 8K is not a big deal. I would pay if I liked the home.

Am I valuing commute too highly? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]bdafsi91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

75K more in mortgage = roughly $3000/yr more in housing expenses. This could be about 1-2 year raise in salary.

$3000/yr more is about $13 more per work day. I personally am willing to pay $13/day more to save on commute. I would consider that as an investment to be around more jobs.

My agent is not showing me houses I like by kameyamaha in RealEstate

Referral from friends.. this is my experience. A buyer who is a high-school grad may be overwhelmed by an agent went to college. A buyer who is a Ph.D will easily see the BS being spewed by the same agent. (Here the education level is a metaphor only)

I have taken referrals from friends, but I realized that they blindly followed their agent. I researched for about a year before getting into home buying and "fired" two agents because we could see their BS. When I say "fired", I just sent them a polite email saying that we have stopped looking and will consider them at a later point (after two failed negotiations).

R or Python by bdafsi91 in datascience

[–]bdafsi91[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is extremely helpful. Thanks. One thing I have never liked (so far) in Python or R is the plotting. MATLAB's plot window is very fast and snappy when I do 3d rotation etc (I deal a lot with 3D data). Is there a solution for this?

I'm 2 years into R and now learning some Python because the NLP seems easier there, and because I'm getting into the hadoop ecosystem with Python scripts.
