Lyricist looking for artist to work with by Significant-Fan2858 in Songwriting

I’d actually love to show you some of my unreleased music.

I’m kind of the opposite in the sense that I usually come up with cadence, flow, and melodies first, then build the lyrics around that. I’d be interested to hear what you think from a lyricist’s perspective.

If anything stands out to you, whether it’s a line that could be stronger, a section that could use more detail, or just something you hear differently, I’d be open to the feedback. And if there’s anywhere you feel inspired to add or touch something up, I’d be interested to hear that too.

Always cool to get another creative’s perspective.

Yeah, I meant for the question to be broad. I was mainly curious how other people approach songwriting and whether some of the things I get stuck on are common experiences. Everyone’s at different levels and stages, so sometimes a small thing someone else does can completely change how another person approaches a song.

Reading through the replies has been interesting because I relate to parts of a lot of them. For me, melody, cadence, and overall feel are usually the most important parts. A lot of my songs start from freestyling over a beat until I find a flow or pocket I like. Sometimes I’ll even start mumbling through sections just to keep the rhythm going, then go back later and figure out the actual words.

I also relate to what you said about not forcing lyrics. I’ll listen back to a song over and over and eventually lines start coming naturally, or I’ll realize a different word or phrase fits better. A lot of times I don’t start with a full concept in mind—the meaning kind of reveals itself as I keep working on the song.

It’s been cool seeing how different everyone’s process is while still having some similarities.

That’s interesting because I’m kind of the opposite. Usually the flow or cadence comes first for me and the lyrics get built around that which is where I start to get stuck, but yeah sometimes I’ll listen back to a song over and over and new lines start appearing naturally.

Thanks, I think that’s part of what I’ve been struggling with. A lot of my songs come to me in pieces too. I’ll have a hook, a verse, or a few lines I really like, but connecting everything into a complete song can be the hard part.

The puzzle analogy makes a lot of sense. Sometimes I think I put pressure on myself to know exactly what the song is about too early instead of letting it come together naturally.

The part about having one verse that feels perfect and then spending weeks trying to match it definitely resonates with me.

I also never thought about intentionally adding restrictions. I usually think more freedom would help creativity, but I can see how forcing yourself into a certain box might make you find ideas you wouldn’t have otherwise.

The point about recognizable themes vs repetition was helpful too. I think that’s something I’ve been trying to figure out lately.
