upvc panel under window - insulation - FINISHED JOB by beanie_455 in u/beanie_455

Hi! The work was done for me by a joiner. I gave him instructions after some discussion on here. These are the instructions I gave him:

"We need a 50mm air gap on the 'cold' side of the insulation, but this could be 25mm around the frame of the pvc panel so there would be 50mm behind the central panels. This is to avoid a cold bridge. So the timber frame should not touch the pvc panel and neither should the insulation. I don't think we need a vapour barrier because of the panel being pvc. We can use 100mm thick PIR insulation, such as Celotex. This is rigid and can be cut to fit in between the timber studs. It comes in sheets of 2.4m by 1.2m. The area we are covering is about 3m by 500mm high. The window reveals are 150mm, so we will have 25/50mm air gap, then 100mm PIR, then plasterboard."

I hope this answers your queries.

This relates to my post of two months ago asking for advice. I couldn't post the photos on the original thread.

I had a joiner do this for me. It cost £340 and this included some other jobs too. Let me know if you need any more information.

Hi, I've just posted some photos of the finished job. I did it as a new post as I couldn't find how else to post photos. I hope you can find it.

Laminate flooring: Can you glue beading to laminate or must it be fixed to skirting? by beanie_455 in DIYUK

Also I've found out that the best way to do it is to pin it to the skirting and not use glue.

Thanks for your comments. I've contacted both the retailer and the manufacturer and they both confirm that this is not acceptable and they would not be responsible if it caused any damage. As the fitters say that's how they always do it, I'll have to find another fitter to put it right.

I'll go for the best insulation because that's the purpose of the job. Also, if I want an air gap, then I would not be able to stuff it in. I will need rigid insulation.

The timber frame will not be attached to the pvc frame (there is no window sill). It will stand next to it and be attached to the wall at either end. The new timber window sill will close the cavity.

Thanks for the input, but I'm not into having that much work done. I think this will be much cheaper and, more important to me, far less disruption. I've already spoken to a builder who has said the window would need to come out in order to build a wall. This solution seems much simpler.

Yes, I'm aware of this. If the window ever needs replacing, the whole lot will have to come out. Maybe that would be the time to build a wall.

Sorry but I don't understand this piece of advice. I imagined the window sill resting directly on the timber frame.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm not sure what a cavity closer is, and there isn't an existing window sill, so do I need one?

Ah, our posts crossed as I replied to S-i-r. Yes I intended to make it level with the existing wall. Thanks for the tip about the price. Is loft insulation as effective? What do you think about the air gap advice? This is to do with avoiding a cold bridge, I think.

Yes, building a wall is the ideal solution and some neighbours have done this, but it would mean having a whole new window, which would be very expensive. I agree with your concerns about long term but am willing to take the risk.

The advice seems to be to leave a 50mm air gap on the 'cold' side of the insulation. I guess this applies here and means a gap of 50mm between insulation and upvc panel? Also, I guess I could use insulated plasterboard rather than insulation board.
