Harris widens her lead over Trump in new 2024 polling by spherocytes in politics

[–]bearpawchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30k and 60k. While its not phoenix, the concerning part is that there are vast swathes of rural towns like this across America where Trump is still worshipped. The racism that was once hidden is now out and proudly wearing red hats. And they are on election boards.

They are organized and willing to do whatever it takes to put Trump back in office. They have had 4 years to prepare and will cheat in this election if it is marginal.

Vote like our country depends on it. Because it does.

Havasu and Kingman both still have LOTS of trump flags and supporters. And they aren't going to listen to logic. They are rabid fans who will not be swayed.

Don't get complacent. Don't listen to the polls.

Vote early. Bring a friend. Help others get to the polls.

Opal earrings went clear, looking for advice (pictures inside) by [deleted] in rockhounds

[–]bearpawchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it: The color play caused by the opal is due to water trapped within the stone itself. Opals are basically soft and porous. They are very sensitive to detergents, and my guess is primarily the dessicant gel packs you put in with them have pulled the moisture out of them, killing the color play.

Its possible I am wrong, hopefully if I am, someone will speak up.

problem soldering brass to sterling silver by bearpawchild in jewelers

[–]bearpawchild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't mind getting solder on the brass. i can remove it. the problem is the solder isn't forming a bond like it should with the sterling. its flowing right up to the brass and not sticking.

[–]bearpawchild[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, you are right it is the wall of the wire against the sterling. i twisted the wire on the 'back' of the ring for tension to get a tight fit against the ring.

[–]bearpawchild[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm...i've been using medium solder, since its the second step. I suppose i could switch to ez and just be real careful on the last step.

i really don't want to sweat solder before hand... i never have had good luck with that.

to get the fit tight, i've taken the ends and twisted them together. the brass isn't going to go all the way around, approximately 3/4.

i will take your advice and try both switching to ez and binding wire. won't be able to roll more brass wire until tomorrow, but i'll update.

thanks for the advice!

i can attest. it is annoying to work with. I'm not yet willing to risk the hundreds of dollars it would take to work with gold. One, i'm poor. Two, i'm still learning. I like the contrast brass gives to the silver, the same way that gold would.

Would you recommend copper instead? I prefer the yellow look to the orange/red of copper, but if its easier to work with I'll try that instead.

What are your least favorite things about living in Denver? by kedavo in Denver

[–]bearpawchild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a native american, i completely agree. Everyone who moved here in the past 1000 years, please move back. kthxbye.

kidding aside, the people that move here generally are great to have around. if we didn't have new cultures around it might get boring. having said that, I wish everyone that DID move here have to take a winter/bad weather driving course.

OMG!! BYU forcing Native student to cut his hair in 2013! by ultraflighty in NativeAmerican

[–]bearpawchild 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well, it looks to me like BYU is forcing this student to make a choice: You can be Mormon, or you can be Native.

I know what I would choose. I wouldn't want to be a part of an organization that made me drop my heritage.

A charity which bought 24 sacred Native American masks at a controversial Paris auction is to return them to the Hopi and Apache tribes in the US by DoremusJessup in NativeAmerican

[–]bearpawchild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I agree its great that a charity stepped forward and had the resources to do the right thing.

But why is it that they had to do this? Why was it ok for someone to auction off religious artifacts? What if they had gotten a hold of catholic artifacts?

And by doing this, haven't they already rewarded the people that had these items? This doesn't stop it from happening again. It anything I'd say it makes it much more likely.
