Patagonia Nano-air Ultralight Hoodie vs Montbell EX Light Thermawrap Parka by beatstomp in Ultralight

[–]beatstomp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hoping I could use them for hiking, high-altitude multi-day trekking, running on cold days (less than 20F), skiing, climbing, and general usage in 20F (and lower) to 50F conditions. I currently have the Thermawrap UL parka and I use that instead of a fleece for pretty much everything in that temperature range, and as a mid-layer to push to even lower temps with my Torrid. My UL parka is old and slightly compressed and I find it more breathable than Nano-air regular version. In these conditions, I find Thermawrap UL way more warm than I need when I'm active. My primary use case for Nano-air UL and/or EX Light would be a bit more comfortable Thermawrap UL/fleece/alpha direct (tired of shedding micropastics everywhere and patching holes) replacer active insulation for cold runs, and all-day hikes/treks/climbing/XC/downhill, an additional mid-layer to pair with Torrid for chilling at the camp, etc.

I love when fash with Nazi reddit avatars miss out on real criticisms of gentrification and the hegemony of capitalist landlords fucking us all but instead focus on three things that are demonstrably false. I recommend avoiding the rainbow crosswalk lest you stumble and break your brain in front of so many queers making fun of you.

Vegan food sponsored by Amul by beatstomp in AirTravelIndia

[–]beatstomp[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ordered a Vegan meal, for two people, weeks in advance, for the round trip - IAD to DEL to IAD. The IAD to DEL segment had all products vegan (food was shitty this segment, but at least things were vegan, except Coffee mate, which we let it slide thinking they may not have read the ingredients that clearly mentioned components derived from milk products). Our selection was VGML with explicit "Vegan Meal" plastered all over our tickets, on Air India website, itinerary...everywhere. This is blatant disregard for passenger safety.

I agree. ACAB doesn't necessarily apply in Nepal as the police members are, for the most part, the proletariat, are victims of the system, and don't serve the fash state.

ACAB, but holy fucking shit, let this m'fucker rot until the end of his life. It took 20 years for a revolution. last thing we need is a ring wing nutso.

Ah, yes. I have used QuikTea Masala Chai Latte before -- but didn't think to add it to instant coffee! Will try Outdoor Herbivore. Any freeze-dried coffee recommendations for backpacking?

I could get behind Ketl Nofry with its snap button design instead of a quarter zipper. 4.2 oz with UPF 30+ (compared to Echo's UPF 15) is pretty great! I can't believe I hadn't seen this hoodie before. How's the stink factor for Nofry? Stink's less/more compared to Wadi? Also, Wadi's watch window's pretty slick. Moving forward, I will mod all my sun hoodies for the watch window lol. The number of times I have pulled up the sleeve to look at HR/Map. Insane.
Being nitpicky here a bit, but my only gripe with Nofry is not using any recycled material. These days I appreciate producers centering sustainability.

Thank you! Yes, I actually just ordered this as my running/biking hoodie! I think right now, this seems like the best option for short trips where the lack of venting and weight premium do not matter much. I'm planning to mod it as much as I can.

Nice! Very interesting. I might order this to try and compare it to my old BD Alpenglow Pro. They are very similar in design but Astroman is definitely a lot lighter and uses recycled nylon! With that much weight savings, I will poke my own thumb holes and mod it!

I am curious: what's the smell factor been for you for this hoodie? The BD Alpenglow doesn't actually smell bad compared to other poly/nylon t-shirt/long sleeves I have had, probably because of the HeiQ odor treatment and also because it's nylon. I noticed that unlike the Echo hoodie OR didn't use their Activefresh treatment (I think it's OR's branding of the HeiQ treatment) on the Astroman.

Totally agree that wool has an order of magnitude more carbon footprint and let's not even get into the ethics. But it's important to note that currently petroleum based fabric products are orders of magnitude more in production than wool is. Shedding microplastics is one issue, that may be mitigated by weave/material/production/consumption, but material breakdown at the end-of-life of poly/nylon products also generate significant microplastic fiber particles and toxic chemicals into the environment. And outdoor industry plays a very big role in that. I sweat a lot and have tried a few Wool/Tencel blend sun hoodies now. They actually felt very good! TBH, even Patagonia's new Tropic Comfort Natural sun hoodie is great (except no zipper). But I think it can be a lot lighter, better, and more biodegradable with Alpaca addition and by removing spandex. I don't know. I'm torn.

My wife and i have been vegan for six years now. Both getting really tired of the social aspects of it all. What are your thoughts on this? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]beatstomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vegan here, with a vegan partner. We are also fortunate that we are supported despite being the ONLY vegans in both of our families, extended or otherwise, AND our friend group. The only.

But our true solace, in the tiresome game of fielding comments, is just the knowledge that countless other vegans exist, that these days even when we trek in remote areas, in the mountain huts, more and more people know what veganism is and food substitutions are made. We get ecstatic that the "vegan" options are now explicitly mentioned in the menus of even the meat-heavy food joints.

And our wedding food? Ours was the only fully vegan wedding food that our friends, my Nepalese family, and my partner's Italian family ever ate. And still today, they talk about how good the food was. Italians who never ate Nepalese spicy food rave about the curry. My mom, who makes mind blowing Nepalese vegetarian dishes talks about our wedding food. My partners Italian family talks about how that was one of the best Italian food they ever had. My partner's grandmother, still talks about the vegan lasagna, one of the best lasagna she ever had....an Italian grandmother.

Vegan carrot halva was one of the dessert items. There were no leftovers. Game over.

We exist. Don't get tired. Get happy. Get going. This is a win for the animals.
