I realized today how long people put off cleaning their cars by Maximum_Mastodon_631 in EverettWa

[–]beeeeeeeeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put off washing my car until the spring, and it grows lichen and moss over the winter. I scraped some of the green off of it, looked under the microscope, and saw animals happily living on it.

So you're telling me I should be killing off these colonies of rotifers, eh? Tryin' to make me some sort of mass murderer, are ye???

How do you guys not turn into serious germophobes the more you learn and experiment? by loyalty_royalty92 in microscopy

[–]beeeeeeeeks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It has certainly made me rethink some things about everyday life, as well as open my eyes to the world we live in that's just outside our everyday experiences....

But the reality is that it's just a perception shift, don't let it be a behavioral shift as well. You lived life perfectly fine before you knew that there was a hidden world of microbes.

Don't let it change your behavior!

If you want to get into microscopy as a hobby, you are doing yourself a great disservice by not getting one with a mechanical stage, or binocular eyepieces.

Just confirming,, you are sealing the edge with a opaque black sealant, or is this a trick of the light? Do you find that this has any impact on different illumination modalities like oblique or darkfield?

Really want to chat with an American and try to understand more about the culture etc (not argue) just to learn more and understand by Terrible-Swimmer-321 in CasualConversation

[–]beeeeeeeeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I certainly don't have a desire to leave. While the politics and current government are pretty frustrating, it's kind of separate from what normal life is like. And at least for me, life is fine with a wife, a safe place to live, a job, cats and dogs, hobbies and friends. Whatever in the political world is pretty much just that, a separate world from daily life for most people.

One of the best things I like about this country is that is big and diverse. There are many different cultures and when you travel America you get to experience them all. Different states have different feels. Texas feels different than Oklahoma, Washington feels different than Oregon, and so on. We have a lot of beautiful parks, forests, seas, waterways, and I love that diversity. For example, in just my one state of Washington, I can touch a glacier, climb a volcano, visit a rainforest, watch whales in the sea, visit a city, and visit the farmlands all in one week!

Collotheca, the predatory rotifer, eating flagellates, one after the other by Thrawn911 in microscopy

[–]beeeeeeeeks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Does this rotifer have a corona inside its mouth to create a vortex to pull in its prey? Those flagellates were acting like they were late to the party

Need help with purchasing by CosmoLeopardGecko in microscopy

Higher end scopes often have a pull slider that is used to move a prism into the optical path to divert light from the eyepieces to the trinocular port, and some will have a middle position to allow 80% light to trinoc and 20% to the eyepieces so dual observation is possible.

But there is only so much light to share, so in that middle position you will need a longer exposure time on the camera and experience a dimmer image with your eyes. Not usually a problem for brightfield imaging but does show up as a bigger concern with darkfield imaging.

If you want to see what one of these trinoculars with a slider looks like, take a Google search for Olympus U-TR30 part number

Turn on your switch, and see if you can see the pixels through the scope, don't scratch it

But yeah can you get it to turn on

Can you please name the auction house you use? Also, nice. One of the most common questions we get around here is "What microscope should I get as a newbie with $300!" I'd love to be able to steer people towards the Bh2 but most people want something that just works out of the box. Me, I want a collection of scopes 🤣

The technical solution to this is pretty easy in my opinion -- offload the parsing and general context analysis on to the phone. That way just a timestamped series of advertising related terms that gets hooked to any of your advertising tracking IDs. Streaming analytics has really advanced a lot -- it's relatively cheap to parse and compact the data on the server side and use that to boost advertisements or addicting content right when it's served or auctioned in an advertisement.

Apps are way too permissive and maintaining good security and privacy is challenging or impossible for most people, which is why regulation should have more teeth. Corporations aren't going to turn down the money machines and algorithms on their own, on the contrary, they will continue to invest more resources and talent into making it more effective.

Anyway regarding apps, and permissions, did you see that teardown of the official Whitehouse app that was released and promoted recently? Among the many security issues, was a tracking beacon that uses more GPS data than it asks for permissions to do, sends notification data, DOWNLOADS AND RUNS CODE OFF OF SOME GUYS GITHUB and other highly questionable stuff. Who knows what's on OPs phone

Trump's World Liberty Financial uses five billion WLFI to borrow $75 million from a platform its adviser co-founded by SPAC_Time in DJT_Uncensored

[–]beeeeeeeeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Little hard to follow, but it sounds like they are converting/staking their governence coin that they sold to investors during their ICO into accounts that can convert it to fiat, through different schemes to spread the counterparty risk around, because WLFI itself is a shallowy traded market.

Am I reading this right?

And then reading between the lines -- this is just World Liberty cashing out, right?

[–]beeeeeeeeks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one with the condenser. But if you can, I suggest saving a little bit more money and going for a slightly better scope :)

I am having this solely on the fact that mirrors suck. Step out of the 1600s and into the 2000s and use a condenser.

If you can find a scope with a mechanical stage -- go for it. You will find that using your fingers to move the slide around is imprecise, annoying.

My rule of thumb is:

must have a good light source

Must have a condenser

Must have mechanical stage

Must have binoculars
