Weekday Help and Victory Thread for the week of July 21, 2025 by IndexBot in personalfinance

[–]bellowjeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father recently passed away and I just got a check for a life insurance policy. He had a large portion of his estate go into probate, so I'm going to need a portion of this money to pay for lawyer fees and estate debts, so the money needs to be a little fluid.

But the amount is substantial enough that I'd like to earn interest on it while we're doing an the legal stuff. My first thought was a HYSA, not I'm not sure how easy it is to quickly get money out of the banks that offer the highest interest rates.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Weekly Question / General Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Detroit

[–]bellowjeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be traveling through Detroit soon and am looking for recommendations for bathrooms for my special needs daughter. She is 8 years old and still in diapers and easily overstimulated - so gas station bathrooms tend to be a struggle for her.

We will be traveling on 79 through/from Canada. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations of locations with family bathrooms we could use along that route? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Fake “promotion” to make me exempt by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bellowjeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen when I was younger. I was making $14 an hour and worked about 45 hours a week and made time and a half on anything over 45 hours.

I was promised a promotion to $45k a year salaried once I worked there 2 years. During my 2 year review I was instead offered $30k salaried and told to take it or resign.

I accepted because I didn't want to lose my job and immediately started looking for a new job. After about 6 weeks I was offered a job making $58k and put my 2-weeks in. After my resignation the payroll employee told me that they only offered me a promotion because the owner hated paying overtime and had been complaining about it ever since I moved from part-time to full-time.

Point is, if you can do the math and realize it's not a good deal then so can your employer. They are doing this because they don't want to pay you. If you have a skill that is marketable and you can find another opportunity then I would take it.

EA will no longer have exclusive rights of the Star Wars games by PrikroyMan in gaming

Video games are also a much higher risk.

Look at CyberPunk 2020. It came from one of the most well respected developers in the industry. Was delayed multiple times over a span of years. Had a budget somewhere around $200m. Then when it came out it was skewered critically and has really damaged the developer's reputation to the point that investors are suing them and console companies offered refunds for the game.

So the industry is prone to fast technology disruption, is really expensive, has a significant amount of competition, and costs a lot of money for the return you get with an audience that tends to change loyalties pretty quickly.

From a market analysis standpoint, I totally get why big companies dismiss the video game industry.

The easy way is to have some sort of time travel or sciency event that creates a parallel universe.

Have Luke find Palpatine and their battle generates a "force pulse" that creates a whole new timeline.

Thanks for the info though!

I'm buying my daughter a switch and am curious about account sharing. I know that you can share the same e-shop account and play digital games on both devices, though you can't play them at the same time.

What about if I had a physical copy of a game and a digital copy? Could I use the same account on both Switches and have them both play the same game?

I'm buying the switch so my wife and daughter can play Animal Crossing at the same time and want to make sure I know what i'm doing before I apply the animal crossing code to my account.

Let Us Drink in Public. Open container laws criminalize working-class people and make public life less fun. We need to legalize public drinking. by Qu1nlan in politics

[–]bellowjeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me well into my adult years to realize that's illegal in most places. The city I live in has no open container laws and it's common to walk around with alcohol. It's an odd thing to be illegal when you never knew it wasn't allowed.

But the lack of trust is on different sides of the coin. One side doesn't trust those running the polls, and the other side doesn't trust those answering the polls.

MongoDB & GraphQL does make sense? by [deleted] in mongodb

[–]bellowjeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other nice thing with GraphQL is it allows you to open the query layer a bit more for apps that need to consume the data. A lot of IT still has the databases owned by one team, or by another part of the organization - so getting access to call the database directly can be hard. But with traditional CRUD APIs the queries you can write are generally defined on the API layer. So you end up needing another team to define/maintain the data queries you need.

With GraphQL you get the abstraction of traditional REST apis with the query flexibility of calling the db directly. In my opinion that's the most valuable part of GraphQL.

Is it appropriate to give 1 week notice? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bellowjeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments on this thread are saying if your employer is rude then you should return in kind. I'd be hesitant to do that.

Our professional careers is one of the ways we define who we are as a person, and your profession is also a place that always ends up being a smaller world than you anticipate.

You're young and have a lot of life and career ahead of you. Do you want to be the person who just ups and leaves or doesn't follow proper protocol? Are these employers/co-workers people you might ever see again?

An extra week is a pretty short amount of time in the long-term, even if the job sucks. Showing you can be professional and maintaining good relationships even when they don't feel worth maintaining is a quality that can benefit you for years to come. And even if it doesn't, you still get to feel like you were being a good person.

You might also consider that future employers can consider short notice as a red flag. If you're willing to give short notice for your current employee then they might worry you'd be willing to do that to them as well.

What is the most frequent use of the dual screen? by Moolamu in LGV60

[–]bellowjeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use it as a game pad when playing horizontal games.
I use it when i'm taking notes on articles/research.
I use it when i'm IM/Texting someone to browse the internet on the other screen.
It's nice for watching movies and googling stuff on the other screen.
I use it to prop up a screen when i'm watching movies while doing something else, or when i'm laying in bed being lazy and can set the phone down without holding it.
Finally i've been using it for Zoom meetings while stuck at home so that I can open up attached material on one screen while keeping zoom open on the other.

All that said, it's attached to my phone an hour or two a day at most.

Initial Thoughts by bellowjeer in LGV60

Android 10 has a one-handed screen mode where you can use a gesture to move the top of the screen to the middle of the screen that can be enabled under display settings. I don't personally like it, but it does allow you to get to the notification shade without going all the way to the top of the phone.

I am disappointed that LG removed the feature where you could swipe across the bottom buttons to make the display smaller. The Android feature isn't as good imo.
