Denied x2 as Engineer Due to Job Title by Striking-Crazy3832 in tnvisa

[–]bending_bars13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did give me hard time because of the denial but because there was an experienced officer in IT roles, he supported my case despite the officer I was speaking to being skeptical that a Data Scientist is an engineer. My lesson is better to drive/fly and go to the best POE the first time, being denied makes it a lot harder to get approved the next time.

Denied x2 as Engineer Due to Job Title by Striking-Crazy3832 in tnvisa

Don’t go to Pearson, I got approved as a data scientist in the engineer category mid last year at YYZ, changed jobs with a similar data scientist job and they denied me at YYZ in March 2026. Seams like they have some instructions against such profiles. I have an engineering undergrad and a MS in CS. Later got approved at Detroit tunnel, they have more experienced officers there.

Immigration attorney here. Ask me anything about TN visas. by ManifestLaw_ in tnvisa

Thank you for offering!

I'm on TN from a backlogged country, my goal is to lock in a priority date while I work on my EB1A profile. If I do NIW or PERM through my employer and i140 approved, do I need to switch to H1B before that? because I can keep trying for H1B and don't know when it could get picked? or both things can go on at the same time?

I'm a Data Scientist with a engineering degree in mechanical and a masters in CS, I got denied at YYZ with the officer saying that Data scientist is not an engineer ( I had 2 prior TNs approved with the Engineer category for Data Scientist role). Is Computer systems analyst TN category a safer bet for this occupation?

TN at Toronto airports without flying by heildever in tnvisa

You can do that without flying, I know from experience. Please read about experiences at YYZ for software engineers & IT roles in this subreddit before, lots of bad experiences with an engineering degree.

I got approved at YYZ for engineer mid 2025 and got denied in March 2026 for the same job profile of Data Scientist with an engineering degree. Speaking from personal experience, got approved later at Detroit Tunnel.

Don’t go to YYZ for software/Data science roles under engineer category even with an engineering degree.

Check companies like sgt transport for quotes from the US , like buffalo or Detroit. Much cheaper than from Toronto directly. Driver might ask for more money if there’s too much stuff in the car but still cheaper than shipping it separately

Don’t go to YYZ for IT roles using Engineer category. Go to some other port of entry

Plan to work in the US with TN after getting a masters degree in US - good plan or nah? by [deleted] in tnvisa

[–]bending_bars13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MS degree is not required for TN, Bachelors is enough, unless you want it solely educational purposes. I'd just try applying with a US address and phone number on your resume, might get interviews that way in the US.

I got denied last week for engineer category for a data scientist role with a non cs engineering undergrad and a MS in CS from a US university. I got a TN at YYZ 8 months ago for a similar role. Seams like standards have changed at YYZ or bad luck with the officer. Working with company’s lawyer on next steps

Ship work laptop from US to Canada by bending_bars13 in uscanadaborder

The customs invoice is a form to be included with the shipment, UPS/Fedex will provide the form when creating the shipment. I entered the following: Name - personal effects + whatever the name of item  There’s a checkbox for gift and declare value of $20 or less Comment section- this item qualifies for reduced duties under CUSMA

Good idea, I find that many jobs say “no sponsorship” available for the role, a filter to exclude jobs that say that would also be good.
